Re: LA-1K AUTOBAND change issue.

Stephan Barott

It is the band data line, but when it tunes for cetatin frequencies, it does not trigger the amp output. It sends power to the radio at the input rate, or around ?25-30W without any assistance from the amp. Basically, it senses high SWR. If I physically use a different band on the amp and retune, it works. This amp has worked well on most frequencies. There are just a few this effects, only on MARS frequencies and outside of the ham bands. The TX on the amp turns purple does not allow transmitting with power. For MOST frequencies it works just fine without issues. It seems to be from the 40-60M range.???????

New LA 1K delivered with firmware 1.09E

I took delivery a couple weeks ago of a new LA 1K amp from Palstar. As the title says it was delivered with firmware 1.09E. The latest firmware available for download on the Palstar website is 1.08S.
Does anyone have information on what enhancements or fixes are in version 1.09E??

Points well taken, David, AF6HO.? Lol.. Forget about the LA-1K, I use my Elecraft KX2 as a QRP exciter to operate on 5346.5 kHz USB with my Elecraft KPA1500 set to Band 5; staying well within the permissible 100W PEP ERP limit.? Oh btw, the integrated ATU of the KPA1500 even provides VSWR matching for my experimental 60M antenna, last year.

In terms of you not seeing any value of my request asking Palstar to resolve the issues, I'd suggest you contact Mark Ward?(Palstar's technician) directly so Mr. Ward can share with you why he thought my request's a valid one.? I'm just guessing now.. Palstar might have some challenges hiring and keeping talented STEM personnel after the COVID-19 pandemic to address various LA-1K issues in a timely manner.

In terms of you saying "I don't think vehicle makers should own responsible driving" I sure hope Mercedes' "DRIVE PILOT" operating under their stated conditions/environments would own responsible driving as a certified SAE Level 3 system for the U.S. market; please go to for details provided by said vehicle maker.

OTOH, I think it makes sense that Palstar blocked 11m amplification - this is the responsible thing to do - and eliminates an entire market/sale to a "target audience of abuse" by hams and CBers alike who push illegal power on that band.

Following the same logic, vehicle manufacturers should set hard speed limits on cars so that you can't travel above the speed limit ever, as well.
Just like I don't think vehicle makers should own responsible driving, I don't think Palstar should own enforcing hams knowing the rules and obeying them.

As a group of device owners, let's try to keep our requests to the manufacturer to things that matter and resolve usability issues.

So thanks for raising awareness, but no thanks on your suggested amp behavior enhancement.

In his reply to my said email notification, Mr. Ward advised me on 1 June 2023, stating "I will forward your comments to Paul on the separate band annunciators for 30M/60M.? This would be a display change, with antenna switching capability."

As of this writing (nearly a year later!!) Palstar still hasn't released the expected firmware update to address the issues.? As the saying goes.. hurry up and wait, my friend.

Re: NOT MANY POSTS

Except for one person who likes to complain about everything, you will find most owners are quite happy with their LA-1K.? I initially had one issue where the thermal paste under the final was put on to thick, and oozed out and caused a flash pf blue that lit up the room when I keyed down.? I immediately unkeyed, unplugged the amp and called Palstar.?? They said I could clean around the final to remove the extra paste and test it, and if I discovered damage, to send them the unit back for repair.? Fortunately, I was easily able to clean it off and there was no damage done to the contacts or solder points, and its been going good for two years now. ? Very well built amp, with excellent support for actual issues.

There were more posts in the past, but Firmware 1.08S is quite stable and has apparently fixed earlier issues.

I use mine nightly at full output on CW traffic nets in Direct Keying mode, with full break-in through a QSK-2500 electronic T/R switch, and with automatic band-switching through a band-data line.? Supply voltage is 240v.

Re: low output on 15M.

Are you plugged into 240 or 120. That will make a difference.

On 120v w/16w driveI get 450w out, 20w drive I get 600w out

In accordance with your 14-Dec-2023 post /g/la1k/message/1488 the LA-1K in question started to work just fine, after you found the PTT phone plug on your transceiver came undone when swapping out the old amp.

Given a LA-1K SWR readout of 1.2:1, I'd think it's operating on the same antenna system that was connected to your old amp.? If your old amp was also showing a SWR readout of roughly 1.2:1 and had an acceptable RF output on the same frequency range on 15m, then there is a good chance your new LA-1K isn't fully serviceable.

If you haven't already done so, you will want to contact Palstar soonest for any repair actions, as necessary, especially if your LA-1K is purchased brand new from one of their authorized dealers that might have the unit sitting on the shelf for months; reasons as follows:

1.? Mr. Mark Ward (Palstar techician) advised me in writing the LA-1K warranty is only for a period of 12 months from the date of manufacture.
2.? Mr. Ward also advised me in writing that other than Palstar, one cannot derive the date of manufacture of a given LA-1K from its serial number.

Hope your LA-1K is in fact fully serviceable, and the root cause is something real simple like the last time when it was just a cable came undone.

73 and Happy New Year!
