That question again: How to import an Eagle
On 31.03.24 21:14, Jon Evans wrote: > Try adding the Eagle library in the Manage Symbol Libraries dialog. > Eagle is one of the formats supported there. Ah, that sounds great. Found my way in there, but using "browse libraries" to navigate to my Eagle stuff, Kicad will again not see a .lbr file, only .lib, so no apparent ability to digest Eagle there. (Clicking on the "Kicad symbol library files (*.lib)" button offers no better eyesight, despite the up/down chevrons intimating that options are on offer.) I may have to grab a strong coffee and brace myself for a Kicad upgrade, in the hope that being up to date will reduce the risk that I'm doing things the hard way. (Procrastination can do that - don't ask me how I know.) Many thanks, Erik

That question again: How to import an Eagle library?
4
Tried "Simply go to File->Import Non-KiCad Project->EAGLE Project and then select the EAGLE schematic file", as googled, but in Eeschema, File-> Import->FootprintAssociationFile will only allow .cmp files, not .lbr. Top level Kicad's File->ImportProject->EagleCAD will only allow .sch & .brd files. The one thing worth importing _is_ a hand-forged custom library, so I'm fervently hoping there is a way, even though multiple google hits only hint at the possibility, without actually revealing a working method. If there's a mention in the Help manuals, then I'll have to visit an optometrist. It is slowly training me. As the shortcuts sink in, workflow improves markedly. Erik

Updating KiCad
8
I started a new project under version 8.0 and a pane popped up to say that there is an update, but it disappeared before I could do anything about it. I cannot find any 'check for updates' command under Files, Tools, Preferences or Help. On the Web site, I can only see version 8.0 and 'Nightly' available. What I would very much like to do is import a schematic from LTspice. I was told some time ago that it would be possible in version 8.x. Please advise. -- Signature OOO - Own Opinions Only Best wishes John Woodgate, Rayleigh, Essex UK Keep trying Virus-free.www.avg.com

How to add non-default track widths?
4
By googling, I've discovered that the frozen track width selector in Pcbnew is due to only one track width deliberately being allowed until the hidden puzzle is solved. But after adding 4 more widths in the Design Rules Editor, the selector is still frozen on the 0.25mm default. An exit & restart shows that the extra 4 widths are now known to the Design Rules Editor, but the selector still won't shift, either beforehand or after shift-W. All I need is to be able to select one of the added widths, then use that for any chosen airwire, in the standard laying out process. Can Kicad do that? Somehow? One flummoxed Erik.

Promulgating a package edit to Pcbnew
Sorry for the noise. The Germans have a name for it, Vorf¨¹hrungseffekt?, if memory serves: The moment you attempt to demonstrate something, it goes awry. I've found the "Exchange Footprint: Change" button. A way to make that the default would be good. Maybe an update will? Now I can chase a Case 730C-4 package for the MOC3052. (Who'd play videogames, when there's real stuff to chase? And the goal of a (working) PCB at the end.) ? Hmmm now, three decades later the internet seems to prefer Vorf¨¹hreffekt. Erik

Promulgating a package edit to Pcbnew?
Using Properties -> Edit Footprint, I've changed the package for an LP2950 to Package_TO_SOT_SMD:TO-252-2, found using the "Select" button. I've subsequently run "Generate Netlist" in Eeschema, and "Read Netlist" in Pcbnew, but there the package shown remains the default TO92, somehow. When I hit 'e' on the component in Eeschema, Fields: Footprint: shows the new Package_TO_SOT_SMD:TO-252-2, as does the "Field Value" when that field is selected. But on the left, Library Symbol: shows Regulator_Linear:LP2950-5.0_TO92. Whether that's a contributor to the new package not reaching Pcbnew, is beyond my ken. I thought I'd done well to figure out that DPAK is TO252 in Kicad, but now we need to make it stick. While on packages, is there a quick way to find a 6 pin DIL package with flat-footed short pins, making a 0.3" wide DIL SMD? The MOC3052 devices I have are that funny package. The datasheet shows that as Case 730C-4. I tried selecting an Osram SFH9x0x package, but that also doesn't make it to Pcbnew, so I can see if it's the right size. I could maybe solder them onto a through-board drilled pad layout, but it would be inelegant - or is that what folk did with the bigger package? I'll figure out how to update my Kicad version. That might help. Erik

KiCAD Library Conventions in PDF (download available)
Hello I compose and upload KiCAD Library Conventions PDF generated from https://klc.kicad.org/ One of the most important document for KiCAD. P.S. No idea why I can`t upload files there (Files folder). No problem with LTspice or QSPICE group! Electrical Rules Check Help
3
Hi, I am new here, I was testing this basic Filter Circuit in newer v8.0 from their website, KiCad Eeschema as GUI for ngspice, tutorial for setting up the simulation (sourceforge.io) About halfway is Section 6. 6) Using a Dual OpAmp TL072 I ported the model as suggested, and Code reflects as such for each 3 parts. Circuit Simulation runs, fine, no issues, but when I do Design Rules Check, it comes back with as indicated Errors! Can someone comment - Attached is the Snap and is embedded as well for ease. Thank you for your help. R/ Dil.

V8 Needs KiKit but it wont install
2
I have just installed V8 but when I run the PCB editor it complains that KiKit is needed (fair enough, so did V7). However, after running the install command in the KiKad command prompt running the "kikit --help" command it claims 'kikit' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Any suggestions ? Dave

KiCad 8 Error while using demo project
7
I have just installed Kicad 8 and was trying to use one of the demo projects to check out the new features. I thought this error message appeared when I was using the 3D Viewer, but I am not certain (it appeared on my second monitor that was showing the schematic). I dismissed the error and then it reappeared a short while later while I was doing something else (not using KiCad). Both the schematic and PCB windows display a banner saying the files are read-only. I captured the error message on its second appearance. It has not reappeared while I was preparing this message. Has anyone else seen this message or does anyone know what may be causing it? ngspice linear AC simulation?
3
Until KiCAD 6 I was able to define a linear ngspice AC simulation by including a text .ac lin 101 100 1meg for simulating a linear frequency range from 100 Hz to 1 MHz with 101 samples/decade but with the current KiCAD 7.0.11 freshly installed on Debian GNU/Linux and ngspice-42 the display remains with a logarithmic frequency scale despite Sim Command -> Custom properly detecting my request. In ngspice I would .control ac lin 101 100 1meg .endc but these statements are not detected as custom commands, even when setting LTSpice compatibility flag. Is there a way to achieve a linear frequency AC simulation with KiCAD as graphical frontend to ngspice? Thanks, Jean-Michel

Ignore courtyard DRC and library update
9
Hi all, Thanks for KiCad 8 I have two questions regarding KiCad 8.0 1. I have an LCD on my pcb, and have a large courtyard for it. Under my LCD, there are lot of other components. When I run the DRC tool, I get many false courtyard overlap errors. Is there any way to squelch these? They might shadow real errors. 2. I see a migrate library button. How does it work? If I push it, it says I shall select libraries. If I select them, it says the same error message. Thanks, Lev -- Levente Kovacs Senior Electronic Engineer W: http://levente.logonex.eu

KiCad 8.0 - Simple transformer simulation
3
Hello, I am trying to simulate a simple transformer in KiCad 8.0.0 release build. I attach the project files for reference. I am using the 'coupled inductor' model with a .SUBCKT but I do not see the expected results in simulation when driving one inductor with a sinusoid. Would greatly appreciate any advice or pointing out any errors in the way I've implemented this. Thank you.

Minimum Track Width for Very Long Tracks
16
Hi, Does anyone know of any guidance as to how wide very long straight tracks should be to avoid manufacturing difficulties or breakage due to board flexing (or any other potential problem I haven't thought of)? I have to run a couple of signal tracks a distance of 500 mm and I'm guessing that my usual 0.2 mm width would be a bad idea, but I don't want to make them excessively wide as that would add unwanted capacitance. The exported SPICE netlist file cannot be successfully simulated
When I simulate the circuit using KiCAD V7.99, it is successful. However, when I export the netlist file and simulate it using the ngspice, the simulation fails. Steps for ngspice simulation: 1. source file 2. run All the files used for reproduction are attached.
