Exporting locomotive roster #roster

Mark

I have been a Decoder-Pro user for several years. ?I have not been able to export a roster in a form that I can open in Excel. ?The columns have incomplete information, as if they were not wide enough. ?Is there an export form that will open in excel?
?
Thanks,
?

Mark,
Read this:

It's the only available way that I have found.

IIRC the roster is a text file, or is it just the entries are txt, if so open it with notepad then copy and paste in excel

All,
?
DecoderPro's File - Export Complete Roster appears to make a .zip file, with .xml files for the complete roster and each individual loco entry in a Roster subdirectory.
?
The purpose of this is unclear as it appears to be usable only to the corresponding DecoderPro File - Import Complete Roster. In which case, why not just copy the native files?
?
The individual Loco File - Export can make a .csv file, but only includes actual CVs. The Roster Tab info is not included. Too bad.
?
Perhaps someone with knowledge can share the thinking behind this coding?
?
Regards

Well

I guess it allows an entire roster (and all components) to be coped from one place to another as ONE file. Much easier than manipulating all the individual files

Oh, and if you're trying to import the roster OVERVIEW into Excel, are you aware that Excel can open xml files? It doesn't always do the best job, but what it does do may be sufficient for what you need

In fact, what exactly is it that you are wanting to do??

Excel .xlsx files are basically XML anyway.

The export roster also allows you to make copies as backups of the roster for storage on thumb drives, the cloud, etc. Imagine that?, someone making a backup file of their important information. What will the world think of next!?!?!

If entries in the roster have pictures, does the export include them in the zip file?

?

I would expect it to include them if the files are in the same directory as the roster entries. But if they are somewhere else, what does it do? I’ve heard different ideas of where else some people might have the pictures.

Ken,
If the image is in the roster entries directory the export function does include it in the file. I've never experimented?to see if a path is specified with the image file?name whether it will include that file or not.?

Why not just keep the roster in the cloud, then it’s reachable from multiple computers as is and backed up all the time? ?I use Dropbox??but any cloud storage or even your NAS should work just fine. Just don’t use it from multiple computers at the same time.

The week may start M,T but it always ends WTF.

The key point is to get the backup off site (your house). Just ask the model railroaders who once lived in Pacific Palisades or Altadena. You'll also need something for Insurance proof?of ownership. Just sayin'.
