Sure enough, I'd left the 'SUBSYSTEM=="tty"' out of my udev rule, so perhaps that's why it was creating a link to the usb bus device rather than the tty device.? Working fine now.? Thanks Dave &

The NCE USB device gives an id of 7.3.0 -> 7.3.7 depending on the jumper settings. If it was an older NCE USB, it gave 6.3.0 -> 6.3.7. The idea was the device made different ids for the software
