What operating system, JMRI version, java version? Have you looked at the communication console? ?I run DCC++ and from my experience it¡¯s usually not the base station but an issue in the JMRI software. There have been many updates and your problem sound familiar but without more detail can¡¯t speculate any further.?

Sometimes the base station ceases to respond and the only way out seems to be a hard reset.

I was wondering if there was an issue with the serial connection as it does run at high speed and if there was any mileage in reducing the speed of this connection.

Any ideas greatfully received.

Hi Seth,

While I will not be attending, it would be wonderful if you could make your collection of arduino sketches available to the group.? Perhaps a listing of them as a word document file would work.? I myself am working to construct a thunder and lightning scenario on a pro mini with a led storm cloud and multimedia speakers with a sub woofer.

Thanks a lot!!!? Good luck at the show!

Locked Setting up to use NCE PowerCab, JMRI, and NCE USB Interface to run locos and control turnouts

Hi.I'm picking up this thread because reading it has given me a good idea of how I need to proceed.

My ultimate goal, a few years away probably, is a new layout where train throttles, turnout control, block detection, and signals, are all controlled by JMRI.
For now I'm trying to understand what I need to take a first steps, adding JMRI turnout control and adding an occupancy detector.

On my current? layout I have NCE PowerCab and the NCE USB interface and have been able to run JRMI throttles on the computer and even on the cellphone.(much better than when the grandkids each wanted to grab the PowerCab to run?their?train!).

As I understand, to control my Tortoise machines I need to purchase NCE Switch 8-Mk2 for instance. I've looked at that decoder's instructions and understand how to wire up the Tortoises. I also understand how to assign an address to each Tortoise. Finally, I see that there's a two-wire hookup to the track. That's all. In terms of hardware, is that all I need to control turnouts from PanelPro??

And for adding a detector, if I have an NCE? BD20 detector? and an NCE AIU board, I should be able to get occupancy indication into JMRI Panelpro, correct? Do I need any other hardware (besides the RJ2-7 cable)? Does the AIU connect to my POwerCab power panel? How?? What I call the power panel is the board that came with the powercab which has three RJ2-7 female ports (two front, one back), a port for power, and a two-wire connector to the track. (Is there a better name for the power panel?) Anyway, right now I have the PowerCab controller (better name for that?) plugged into the left front RJ2-7 port, the connection to the NCE USB board into the back RJ2-7 port, leaving the front right port open. Is that where the AIU get connected? And if I want to connect another AIU? Another question: Are the 3 RJ ports interchangeable, or does each have a dedicated function?

I respectfully disagree.

I regularly run JMRI (and am typing this reply) on a laptop that's going on 16 years old. It was originally Win7 but I took advantage of the "free" upgrade to Win10.

Memory for this machine (a Lenovo T400) is relatively cheap and readily available, and an upgrade from the original mechanical HDD to a cheap SSD made a HUGE difference!

That said, if the laptop in question is that slow there may be unneeded startup programs or other crud. Time for a thorough cleaning.

I don't see why a Win-7 laptop should struggle with just one Java program. But even if it does, don't throw it out. Kick off windows and put on a well-supported Linux variant, and it'll fly. Not before giving Win-7 an honest chance, though. There's no reason to fix a problem that does not exist.

That's to be expected. The Power Cab can read almost any decoder.

Then move the same setup (track power lead connections and motor lead connections are via clip leads) to a different bench where the DP computer resides.

First time through this was with a fresh 4.14 DP. The only result from reading the decoder was a 301 error for every CV even though I could see the motor shaft turning during the reads. Thinking 4.14 was the problem since it is new I uninstalled it using the link on the install page, then installed 4.12 that was already in my Downloads directory. The bottom two boxes in Preferences->Roster->Programmer are not checked. I think the advanced programmer version (CVs tab bottom right in the tab area) was selected.

Windows 7 laptop, NCE PHPro version is March 1 2007A. Reset the PHPro.
The Power Pro has much older programming track circuitry than the Power Cab and there are several hardware versions (can't tell without an expert eye on the circuit board).

Older versions (like mine) benefit from a SoundTraxx PTB-100 programming track booster, but I've never had success with programming TCS WOW using my Power Pro.

Error 301 (No locomotive detected), plus the motor shaft turning indicates no problem with JMRI nor your connection to the Power Pro.

The problem is the inability of the Power Pro to detect the response from the TCS WOW. This can have several possible causes:
1) The older programming track circuitry in the Power Pro.
2) Some unusual timing requirements of the TCS WOW. Earlier TCS versions benefited from a TCS firmware update. Some special timing changes for these decoders were also made in JMRI.

With DP read the decoder type on the roster window and then was able to read CVs via DP on a Lenz LE1035 connected to a Maxxon red cap motor. Change clip leads to the WOW decoder and to a Falhauber motor, attempt to read the decoder type from the roster window, the result after a long pause is "Found mfg 154 version 5 no such manufacturer defined". I then selected WOW 101 diesel sound set 4 as the decoder, and the programmer window opened. Attempts to read any CV result in a 301 error even though I can see the motor shaft turning during the read attempt. I'm stumped, its probably something I missed during the install and can't see. Need help.
Your best bet is to stick with the two known high-compatibility programmers:
A) NCE Power Cab.
B) SPROG.

Why not up your installed RAM and Hard-drive capacity!
Not hard to do if you are competent of building JMRI equipment!
Check the size of your HD in "File Explorer", if still at 80 mb or less, up it!

Have fun!

Jim,

Just install the Java first, then JMRI. The extra safe is to throw a reboot
between the two, just to make sure everything is registered for Java right.

Locked EngineDriver 2.24.89 released to production

I have moved the 2.24.89 version of EngineDriver from Beta to Production today.

A big thanks to Peter and Robin for their continued efforts at improving EngineDriver!
And to the Beta testers for helping to catch issues early on.

The changes include:
* Option to show/hide advanced preferences. Advanced preferences are hidden by default
* Entering colon (":") into the host field changes focus to the port field
* Long press on an entry in the Recent Locos List removes it from the list
* Recent Locos List shows the icon from the roster if found
* Show tick marks on vertical sliders, with option to disable
* fix bug when returning from web view
* prevent several crashes reported to Play Console
This update should be available via the normal Play Store mechanisms shortly.

As always, please advise (here or via email) any issues, questions or if you have suggestions for improvements.

Thanks,
? --SteveT

The actual ProductID read from the decoder can be seen in the JMRI System Console immediately after doing a "Read Type from Decoder".

The differing ProductIDs for the same model indicate nothing more than different production runs with minor hardware revisions. ESU doesn't reveal what they may be and they are regarded as identical models by all ESU and JMRI software.

Steve -

I've been improving my "train monitoring system" since you first created this topic about a month ago and now have an Arduino sketch that will set JMRI sensors for block occupancy and train direction accurately based on a block entry and exit sensor.? Works for all "normal" cases and some of the oddball cases (but not all, like two trains entering the same block from opposite ends - which may not be prototypical, but my grandkids seem to think it is loads of fun!).? It has the "block reset" feature that Ken mentioned a few posts back for those situations.? Worked through 16 different train movement scenarios to get this far.? If you want to give it a try, send me a private reply and I'll send you (or anyone else) the code.? Just want to keep track of it till I'm satisfied and will then post to Github.
