Locked JMRI Operations - Print comments on Manifest

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Good Morning;

I have used the Route "comment" field to give instructions to train crews at?given locations. However if there are no set outs or pick ups, the location is not printed on the manifest. Is there a way to "force" the program to print these comments even if there are no moves?

e.g. Local freight returns to point of origin location with no cars. Manifest printout merely says "Train terminates in ....." after last location where pick ups or set outs were done.

Thanks for your help,

Ron

Locked EDGE CONNECTORS BETWEEN PANELS

JMRI 4.12 on an iMac under Parallels and Windows 10

I have successfully broken down my whole layout into eight location panels, each of which is a separate Power District.
I have run into the problem highlighted in github issues 4729 and 4730 back in January. The required Blocks that connect Panel to Panel/Board to Board appear to be all there but I cannot access some of them. I am aware of the "One Direction" criteria and have tried the 'Workaround' suggested in 4730 but this does not work for me.

Has there been any resolution to correct the problem? Has anyone managed to get them to work with multiple connectors on each board?. The first EC works perfectly but the subsequent connections do not. I will re-check for any Name differences between the 'Whole Layout' plan and the individual Power District Panels because that is all that comes to mind right now.
I am keeping it such that connectors on the LHS of a panel connect to the RHS of another panel and vice versa but I do have multiple panels with multiple EC's on many sides with bi-directional single line working and multiple main lines crossing the boards.

Dave

Locked Re: JMRI Locking up

Thanks for everybody's help. I gave up on that iteration, started again from scratch. All blocks now seem to be contiguous, BUT I am still having problems with signals failing to load and the SML along with it. I enclose 2 images, one of the panel as saved, the other from this morning as loaded. the 7 missing heads account for 30 pieces of logic

Locked How to make or modify CPE panel icons?

I have attempted to modify some CPE panel icons and they did not turn out well. As far as I can tell, the icons are a GIF. I took an turnout icon (white) and tried to edit it to another color in Paint. It worked but the image was not very good. The colors were not smooth like the other icons I find in the CPE files. The colors were very mottely without uniformity to the colors. Also, I could not recreate the transparent background so that the panel background color would show through.? What is the trick to modifying existing CPE icons or to building new icons to use in CPE? Does it require some special software?
If anyone has the right software, I would like to modify several existing CPE icons for track and turnouts to create the same image but with different colors.

Thank you all for your input and you were all right although I set the Preferences in Panel Pro I had not Set Preferences in Decoder Pro.
as soon as I inserted COM3 in the appropriate Box and restarted Decoder Pro everything was OK.?
My Roster is now complete and operational

If an alternative is available select that, restart JMRI and try again.

Warning, the Infernal problem can happen again in the future if you have any connection problems. See comments at:

Locked Re: Script occasionally missing the change of state of a sensor

Hi Bob. I can see the sensor states changing when the script is running and the trams are triggering them. I have not been lucky enough to catch if the state changes, or not, when the issue occurs. However, covering the sensor that has been ¡°missed¡± with my finger causes the tram to stop, indicating that the script was still waiting for a state change before continuing. Note that the problem is not dedicated to any one of the sensors. The script normally does exactly as required, but then, out of the blue, the tram fails to stop where it should. The AIU leds tell me that the sensors are operating correctly.
Could it be a data traffic/timing issue causing the change in state to be missed?
A little more info - when a tram passes over a sensor, the AIU indicates more than one change of state, when the front, middle and rear sections of the tram pass over the sensor. However, the state of the JMRI sensor only changes once.
Thoughts?

Steve,
For #2 I used a USB stick, copied the xml and graphics from the roster folder on the desktop. Then did Rebuild roster. It worked.?

Also, took the RPi and PR3 down to the train room and connected to my Digitrax base station. Managed to get everything working :-D. I used ED as well as VNC and the JMRI throttle. Love ED, have to work on Preferences now

To other readers: This set-up was super easy! I use RPi for my other hobby and the installation of that software is no where near as easy as Steve's SD card image approach

Thanks all for responding.??

Dave Heap - I apologize for not specifying the NCE system type that I have.? It is the first one you list -?Power Pro. The main throttle is labelled "Pro Cab" and there is a largish metal box labelled Power Pro. Any wisdom, guidance or direction you can provide regarding the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Locked Re: JMRI software on a laptop remote from layout room

You haven't told us the type of NCE system you are using. There are several main types:

- Power Pro. The main throttle is labelled "Pro Cab" and there is a largish metal box labelled Power Pro.
- Power Cab. The main throttle is labelled "Power Cab". and there is a small plug pack for power
- SB3/5. The main throttle could be a "Pro Cab" or a "Power Cab" and there is a box labelled SB3 or SB5.

What you have affects your options.

My RPi 3B+ arrived last night (thank you Amazon!) and I have just installed your image, using Etcher) successfully. I have a few questions, which I think would be useful for other users so I am not PMing you.
1) Can I use Linux/Raspbian commands (e.g. apt-get update ¡. or similar) to update the JMRI software, if so, can I also select the current test version rather than a production version?
You can update JMRI from the JMRI web page, once you've connected your RPi to the internet.
?
2) Best way to load roster data from my Laptop/desktop environment??
The web server roster page has an Upload button. I've also used WinSCP and windows explorer for this.
3) What is the value of enabling BT, can I use BT for ED?
Some people use BT for attaching keyboards, mice, etc.
4) What are the pros and cons of AP service as opposed to being on a home network?
The built-in access point setup avoids support headaches that seem to come along with "home" networks. If you are network-savvy, I'd suggest switching to an external network for better coverage.

BTW the installation was a breeze, kudos for making it so easy. My PR3 was recognized immediately and the AP service worked so I was able to connect ED without a problem. Now to move everything to my layout and test ;-)

TIA, regards and seasons greetings

Locked Re: Corrupted menus in Circuit Builder

I downgraded to JMRI 3.10.1, and the pull down menus for Circuit Builder in Panel Editor worked okay. They said that a detector circuit was not defined. When I created the first OBlock, the error message ended.

?

Then I re-installed v. 4.12 and the pull down menus in Circuit Builder were jumbled again. Apparently the regular choices were superimposed with the error message, a detector circuit is not defined. When I selected the first choice, to add a detector circuit, I could create an OBlock. Then the jumbled characters of the error message stopped, and the other choices displayed clearly.

?

There seems to be a bug in v. 4.12 for the Circuit Builder that causes the pull down menus to display improperly before any OBlocks are created. Once one is defined, the problem ends. Perhaps the next release can address this problem.

Locked Re: JMRI software on a laptop remote from layout room

I'm assuming JMRI would be setup the same way but in the computer world a terminal server works like this:

<Server with whatever programs you want available>? -- CAT5/6 --?<Very basic computer/terminal PC> This system boots and logs in directly to the terminal host<server> and runs the programs available on the server.?

That's a very different notion of a terminal server than the support in JMRI uses.? ?JMRI's notion of a terminal server is based on a network connection to a device that then contains the serial port.? ?See? (which contains the phrase "Not to be confused with Terminal Services" which is the Microsoft name for what you described).

I happened to have terminal server devices laying about (I used a Lantronix ET8P), and that fit my purposes nicely.? ? Bob was kind enough to port the serial port access of EasyDCC to use a network connection (and the terminal server took care of all of the serial port configuration).? ?It hosted both RS-232 and RS-485 connections and allowed me to not use dongles from my laptop to connect to the layout.??

Today I'd look at the Raspberry Pi to host the connection to the layout, and then use one of the variety of means by which you can communicate from the RPi to your machine elsewhere.? ?Even if you use the RPi for nothing but a serial port to TCP gateway and use the terminal server support in JMRI.? ?Or host JMRI on the RPi, which is probably easier.? ?

Locked Re: MQTT Connection in JMRI

Hi Nathan,
I also desire having the same sketch apply to all nodes of the same type and config updates via MQTT seems to be the way to go. Big tick from me.

As you know,? there is still config to be done before a node can connect to MQTT -
? ¡°Flopper", ? ? ?// ssid
? ¡°Flipper", ? ? ? ? ? ?// password
? "192.168.20.78", ? ? ? ? // MQTT ip
? 1883, ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?// MQTT broker port
? "", ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?// MQTT username
? "", ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?// MQTT password
Until someone comes up with a better idea, I think the best way to do this initial config is via USB connection, conversing with the user through the Arduino IDE or perhaps some other host program (python script perhaps?) for people not wanting to use the IDE. Later updates of these will likely need to be done the same way.

Of course, JMRI does not have to be used to configure these devices, any MQTT client can be use to publish the required config updates. Config through JMRI is perhaps a nice-to-have method, like configuring command stations, etc but can be considered later down the track.

To expand on and retain compatibility with the existing MQTT code in JMRI, unless we deliberately want to break this compatibility,? I suggest your topics be:
?? /trains/ESP/sensors/MACADDRESS???? instead of ? ? trains/sensors/ESP/MACADDRESS??
? (note that trains is very different to /trains, the latter pushing everything down one level of / separators and has a null top level.)
While it's true that there is no existing MQTT code for sensors, keeping the same structure as turnouts seems the logical way to go.

The one thing I don't like (and I mean really don't like) is using the MAC address for the device name. Whilst it may get the job done, I find it cumbersome and awkward to use. I'd rather supply a more meaningful and friendlier name of my own. This could be set during the USB config stage or have a default set in the code, changeable via MQTT config update.? You can still put the mac address in there if that's what you want to use.

Kind regards, Dave Mc.
