Dave, I just did as you recommended. I downloaded and installed JMRI 4.12. I had been using 4.10.

Thank you!

Don,
I’ll add my apology to not responding to your request. ?Sometimes it is also too easy to think that others more experienced in these areas will take up your question. ?

I see that you already have some responses from familiar people who have helped me greatly. ?One question that I would have is are you using:?
Panel Editor
Layout Editor
Control Panel Editor

I have done both for my layout and the Panel created in Layout Editor ?is what I am using now. ?
1. ?I use it to control the layout turnouts
2. ?I have detection on the layout which allows me to see occupancy of trains on the layout
3. ?I have signals on the layout and the panel and JMRI manage the layout to drive the signals on the layout
Because the panel can do these things I have a dispatcher watch and use the functions of the panel to facilitate Operation Sessions.

Knowing your goals for creating the Panel should also help in determining how to help.

Locked Re: Scripts

Garbor,

One interesting thought, have you tried to use the Layout Power command?
This would generate a sequence on the LocoNet that is frequently called a
GPON, with is a set of codes that tells all the hardware on the LocoNet to
respond and provide status. Granted hardware isn't required to respond, but
the normal Digitrax (and most other vendors) hardware will respond. This is
how JMRI normally finds all the turnouts and sensors on hardware at startup.
I have no idea if the Z21 would reply or not. It is just something that came
to mind. It would be interesting to see what messages it generates, if any.
There is also a script, PowerOn.py, that should do the same sort of thing.

Ken,

Many routers have a USB port. If yours does, an external hard drive disk or even a memory stick can be accessed by any computer on the network.

For a Windows computer, the left side of the File Explorer window has a Network icon at the very bottom. From there you can find external devices and label the new disk as W: or any other unique disk name. The feature has been available since DOS but has become increasingly harder to remember how to use.

Other operating systems must have something similar.

Dave,

??? Yes from the loop back test.? I went into the website and have resolved that I likely need to send the unit to NCE.? Will call them tomorrow.

Very frustrating

System connection NCE provides a null manager for interface jmri.commadnstation

The two possibilities are:

  2. A failure of the RS232 converter chip in the Power Pro.

Scenario (1) is far and away the most likely. We have dealt with (and resolved) many such issues. For the solution, follow the instructions at Marcus' page (from the top, above the Loopback Test section)

Scenario (2) is unlikely. We have only seen a couple of them over the past 10 years.

Locked Sharing rosters between computers, with no internet connection

At the club, we have fine networking, it supports the phone throttles. But
our two layouts and desktop programming/test station need to share the
roster data. So far if you mention this, most point out Dropbox and other
services, but all of those require some form of Internet connection to work.
While some claim to keep updates while isolated, you still needed the
Internet to get the computers configured.

So for these isolated clubs, what are people using?

Our mix has Linux-Mint and Win10 systems.

I took that latest LocoNet log file and ran it. It created the sensors and

locos moving from block/reporter to block/reporter.

So the current head is working fine with that flow.

I'd suspect a connection issue at the 9 pin plug on the Power Pro. That would explain the one-way communication. Follow the instructions at this web page (a joint effort between Marcus Ammann and me).

Paul,

Just for perspective, my club uses a DCS200 powered by a PS2012 along with a PTB100 and we can read ESU decoders as well as Paragon 2 and other decoders.PowerPax boosters were removed as they didn't work and were replaced with the PTB100.

All I have tried reversing the DC + and - at home. The power supply has been working just fine powering and running on the layout. One note that Paul did not say was that we did change the setting on the PS2012 to HO to up the Voltage and that made no difference. I am running N scale.

Possibly.

It is also possible that there is something about the polarity of a DC power source for the DCS100 and DCS200. ( we didn’t try swapping that actually... )

I have to wonder with the AC power supply if there is a ripple in the resulting DC on the other side of the bridge rectifier inside the DCS100.

I’ve seen this type of issue cause problems for electrical circuits, but, not being an electrical engineer, I don’t fully understand why.

When I find the clipboard, will attempt to get it all done.

I opened the Help->System Console menu

I could not find the NCE->command Monitor, although a black box was open and lines of communication in green were showing, updating.

More later

Thanks

Ron

Taking this topic back to the original thread...

Ron,?
As all have said, it looks like you may have one-way communication with the Power Pro.

There are several possible causes, but we need you to gather more information. Please Start JMRI and then:
- Open the Help->System Console menu item.
- Open the NCE->Command Monitor menu item and enable Show Timestamps and Show Raw Data. Do not close this window (you can shrink it).
(I recommend you add both of these as Startup Actions in Preferences->Startup.
- Try an Identify.
- "Copy to Clipboard" from the System Console window and paste into a post for us to see.
- Go back to the already-opened?NCE Command Monitor window, click in the message area, do a ?A (Select All) on your Mac, followed by a ?C (Copy). Paste into a post for us all to see.

When we get these two logs, we can tailor the advice appropriately.

??? Sorry for the delay but I have forged ahead to a point.

Following Dave's instructions, (Thank you very much!) the Macbook will start the program track, a Tsunami (not T-2) equipped loco responds by moving forward in incremental amounts as is normal.

What is not normal is that when polling via CV-8, there is no feedback coming into the Macbook to inform what the decoder is, or decoder version.? JMRI will poll the program track about every minute or so, the loco will advance as it is polled until the computer times out.

So, direction out, no info back in.

Something simple I am sure, just not computer savvy enough to get to the last step.

Don,

One other thing. I strongly recommend that you use JMRI 4.12.

Don,

Sorry that I missed your posting on 7/24.

The easiest way to develop on one machine and run the layout on a different one is using a cloud based file sharing setup such as Dropbox.

While the link is Dropbox specific, the concepts apply to any kind of sharing including sneaker net.

In your case, the development machine would use a profile with an EasyDCC "Simulator" connection and the profile for the layout machine would use the serial connection. The shared data includes the roster and panel xml file.

Based on your description it appears that you are using the Layout Editor (LE) rather than the Panel Editor (PE) or the Control Panel Editor (CPE).

For me, the LE drawing method matches how I lay track. I position the turnouts and then connect them with flex track. When I need to tweak the trackage, I drag the turnout and the flex track follows.

A few weeks ago, I requested some basic information to help me get started drawing my railroad in PanelPro. Sad to say, I got no replies.

So far, I've found the original error message that prevented reopening a panel was that I'd defined that my railroad used EasyDCC and was connected to the computer by a serial port. When I edited the panel definition and removed the DCC system and connection information, the error messages ended! That's good, but I wish I could edit the panel on a different computer than I'm going to use with my railroad, and not need to change the DCC system and communication definitions.

I was surprised to find I couldn't draw a track, then connect it to switches and such. Tracks only seem to be added when starting and ending at nodes on switches and other features. It's backward to what I expected, not like CAD systems I've used, and had me scratching my head for a while. I'm pleased to have gotten past that hurdle: it's on to the next one!

I'm sharing this, because the list is intended for helping beginners. Maybe this post will help someone else who is struggling to get started with PanelPro.

Yes, but we also 1) have the command station set to n-scale and 2) tried the
HO setting with no change in behavior.

Paul
Our HO club uses the N scale setting on both the DCS200 and PS2012
