Locked Re: PR3 not communicating after 4.8 upgrade

Thanks for the quick replies Billybob and Bob. After checking things out using device manager, I found out that my PR3 isn't even listed as a device under device manager when plugged into where it always was, which is what I thought was COM3. That is my only open USB port even though Decoder Pro gives me COM3, 4, or 5 as options in the "Connection" tab. So I temporarily moved my printer USB plug into that port intending to check printer address, to verify that the plug was indeed COM3. Long story short my COM3 port is broken, no USB plug (I tried my camera there too) makes contact with the 4 terminals in the plug. So now I'm thinking until I get the port fixed maybe I can unplug my printer, which in its proper place comes up as address 1 (Does that mean it's COM1?), and run the PR3 from there. However, plugging my PR3 cable into there brings up an error message from "VCOM Port" saying that no driver is installed - I take it that I the PR3 driver is specific to a port and that I have to install from the Digitrax website? I cannot find the original driver disk, and it's probably updated by now anyways. And does this also now mean I cannot use the same port sharing PR3 and printer duties just by swapping out USB cables?
Thanks again for your patience teaching a not-very-computer-literate retiree.

A couple of ideas:

1. Did you use the option 'install for all users' or 'just me'??

2. Take a look in the JMRI/logs/session.log and see if that gives any clues.

Tom, I too, have the same problem under Win10. There is something screwy with the install under my profile. Someone here suggested that I install under another user profile so I did that. I installed under the ADMIN profile of my computer and all works well. If I try to open DecoderPro under my own profile, the little Loco shows up, flashes and closes. Under the ADMIN profile, the Loco logo starts up normally and the program runs just fine. I have no help as to why it runs under the ADMIN profile but refuses to load under my own profile. Hoping someone here will know the answer so I dont have to keep switching profiles.

Hope this helps..if it works let the group here know so maybe they can figure it out.

Greetings -

I downloaded and installed the latest version of JMRI (V4.8) for Windows. However, when I click on the Decoder Pro shortcut on my desktop it refuses to open. I tried rebooting my computer - no difference. I uninstalled JMRI and downloaded and reinstalled V4.8 again - no difference.

Any ideas of what else to try? My tablet is operating in Windows 10.

Thanks,

Locked Re: Locobuffer locking up from data overload?

Billybob,

This is great, very helpful. I really don't want any switch commands on the rail sync since I'm using Digitrax DS64's and SE8cs so will make sure they are configured to listen to loconet not rail sync. Then I should be able to cut down on the chatter on the track bus.

Thank you,

Steve

Locked Re: Locobuffer locking up from data overload?

Steve,

Yes, it is accurate to say that anything seen on the DCC track signal is also seen on the RailSync signals (at least in a correctly wired and operating LocoNet install).

In fact, a booster gets the low-power DCC track signal from the RailSync wires and amplifies it to generate the booster's DCC track output.

Yes, it is accurate to say that "it is possible that JMRI might send a command on loconet but if the command station doesn't put it on railsync (thus also on the DCC bus)" - that's what the "Bushby bit" is all about.

Yes, it is accurate to continue that phrase with " the device may not "see" or react to the command". If the device requires commands on the DCC track signal, or requires the DCC track signal to be on the RailSync wires, (or is configured for either of these two things), then a message which never got to the DCC track signal could never get to the device.

The only thing that can put "commands" on the "RailSync" wires on the LocoNet cable is the command station; it puts DCC packets onto the "RailSync" wires. And "boosters" pull the DCC track signal from the RailSync wires and amplifies that signal to generate its own track output.

A "standalone" LocoNet, in the most common implementation, does not have a command station, so the standalone LocoNet's RailSync lines do not have DCC track packets on them. Such a "standalone" LocoNet is not suitable for use with any device which only gets its control information from DCC track packets.

Ideally, you would only use devices which get their control information from the LocoNet "Data" wires with a "standalone" LocoNet. (There may be exceptions to this statement; I won't go into details...)

It is possible to configure ANY of Digitrax's LocoNet-connected accessory decoders, _except_ the DS54, to get their control messages from the LocoNet data lines. The DS54 can _only_ get its control information from the DCC track signal.

Various LocoNet devices vary in their capabilities. Much information can be found in the JMRI "standalone LocoNet" web page, at . The table presented there includes a column for "RailSync", and describes the characteristics of various products.

_background technobabble_

Additional information on the LocoNet wires and how they are used can be found in the "LocoNet Personal Edition 1.0" "spec" which is available thru the Digitrax web site. There's a great deal of technical information there.

Device-specific information can be found in a number of locations. One valuable resource is Doug Stuard's posts and file contributions in the "Digitrax" Yahoo group. Doug has done a lot of work to help define exactly what behavior should be expected for some of the OpSw settings in various Digitrax devices.

Other knowledge I have gained thru study of the products and their behavior. That isn't transferrable, except via correspondence about specific issues.

Have you populated the tables with the turnouts and sensors you will be

Locked Panel Pro and Sprog 3

Hi, I’ve been using a Sprog 3 to successfully programme my locos via Decoder Pro for some time.

I like the idea of being able to change my turnouts via a PC and to this end, I’ve been trying to follow Dick Bronson’s clinic on the Panel editor on a laptop without success.

I never get the full Panel Editor window displayed as shown in the examples, just an abridged version, nothing much between "set a panel name" and the start of the tick boxes except for "Select the type of icon".

Despite selecting some of the options listed under “Select the type of icon I am simply not getting anywhere.

E.G. Selecting “add an item can bring up a window with a box “Add to Panel but its greyed out.

Is this simply because I am using Sprog 3 that Im having these problems and is there any way round them?

My laptops running with:
Windows 10 (none touch screen version)
Panel PRO 4.8+Rbe0ff15
Java 1.8.0_131(en_GB)
Sprog 3 v 2.3

Thanks in advance

Locked Re: Locobuffer locking up from data overload?

Billybob,

Wow, this is REALLY VALUABLE information! I never quite understood the difference between the "loconet" wires and the "railsync" wires. I'm using DS64's connected to external power and SE8c's to control most of my turnouts.

So if I'm understanding you, you are saying that anything that goes out on the track, also goes out via the "Railsync" .... is that correct? And it is possible that JMRI might send a command on loconet but if the command station doesn't put it on railsync (thus also on the DCC bus) the device may not "see" or react to the command? Fascinating! The only way to tell will be for me to go ahead and set that bit and throw every turnout and see what happens. Which I'll do this weekend if not sooner.

If I put together a standalone loconet it would seem I'd improve things but then how would I get commands on RailSync? Or does the locobuffer put them there (maybe a Dick Bronson question?)

Thank you - this is the most in depth conversation I've seen on the subject of Loconet vs the DCC track bus and "railsync." I've read all my Digitrax manuals and haven't seen this covered.

Thank you again for taking the time to help me understand this.

Sincerely,

Steve

Locked Re: Locobuffer locking up from data overload?

Billybob,

You have hit the nail on the head. CATS is a JMRI-compatible overlay that facilitates easy drawing of a prototypical CRT-based CTC system. It manages the SE8c's exactly as you say: merely lets JMRI handle them.

So I need to look at working within how JMRI handles the SE8c or enter each head as a separate head with it's own switch commands for each aspect. I'll look into this but it may be too much trouble.

Prototype uses flashing red for restricting but if this is locking up my system I may try yellow. In fact I'll try it as an experiment: if that resolves the issue, then I know for certain that any efforts I undertake to get flashing red as a hardware-addressable aspect will be worthwhile.

Thank you,

Steve

just end up with what is essentially a 'Back' button which takes you back

No matter how many times Ive tried it I get the same results. Im using

One thing I havent tried is temporarily disabling the virus checking.

Key step is figuring out if this is preventing the download or preventing
opening the download. If the former usually refreshing the page and trying
again will let you get the download. The latter is frequently cured by using
the file browser to the download folder and try launching that way.

Problem is looking very carefully at the popup to see where you can finally
click to say 'I trust it, just do it'. They try to make that not obvious.

Locked Re: JMRI 4.8 is available for download

Hi Bob, Dave

I just downloaded the file that Dave checked and said was working fine to ensure we are looking at the same thing. I removed the offending "MT " block (that I have no idea where it came from as it's a very long time since I created any new turnouts) and tried loading it into PanelPro.With the four lines of the turnout bit removed the load now dies at line 3103: the first instance of outputs in the first signal definition in the file.

I have also tried loading another, smaller file that I use on a demo board that also uses the matrix signal driver and that too stops at the first mention of outputs. I was using that at a MERG meeting on Sunday and before that had fleetingly installed 4.8 immediately after it was announced but very quickly reverted to 4.6 as I met the current problem then and did not have the time before the meeting to investigate it.

I have just uninstalled, downloaded and reinstalled 4.8 and still get the same problem. I installed Java 8 update 141 yesterday if that's of any consequence but the current problem predates that change. I'm running win10.

One thing that does puzzle me that I have realised while looking at the loading error message, console output and running the XML validator in PP is that although the "Invalid content was found . . " bit is the same in all three, the line numbers are very different: 3103 in console and 7701 when loading and in the validator.

I just tried removing all my matrix mast definitions to see if that would allow the file to load but that didn't work either stopping in the oblocks section that I had been working on a couple of weeks back. The message was "Error on line 5003: cvc-complex-type.2.4.a: Invalid content found starting with element 'portal'. One of '{sensor, errorSensor, path}' is expected." This section has been built up using the OBlocks forms in PP so I guess it should follow the correct schema. Not sure if that is of any help.

<oblocks class="jmri.jmrit.logix.configurexml.OBlockManagerXml">
<oblock systemName="OB001" userName="CC00" length="0.0" units="false" curve="0" permissive="false" speedNotch="">
<userName>CC00</userName>
<sensor systemName="CC00" />
<portal systemName="IP1" portalName="CC00-SW14">
<fromBlock blockName="OB001" />
<toBlock blockName="OB091" />
</portal>
<portal systemName="IP2" portalName="SL6-CC00">
<fromBlock blockName="OB136" />
<toBlock blockName="OB001" />
</portal>
</oblock>

Thank you very much for your assistance in this matter.

To download a new version of JMRI, I often just Google "JMRI download" and find the page. The current production release is 4.8, and can be downloaded (Linux, Windows or MAC version) at this page:

To attach the computer to a layout and run WiThrottle requires whatever interface is used for the command station brand (I use Digitrax, so I use a Windows computer or a Linux computer, connected by USB to a Digitrax PR3 which is connected to the LocoNet with a six conductor LocoNet cable to talk to the command station). Also, a wireless router must be communicating with the computer (either wireless, or cable-connected; I don't know about bluetooth) to broadcast the JMRI WiThrottle. In our club layout, I have a stand-alone router (not Internet connected) that the members can change their wifi to connect with.

Locked Re: Update to JMRI 4.8 - CMRI Connection

Scott, Bob,

I might be able to help with this one. I started rebuilding a while ago and I noticed something with my SMINI setup that I hadn't with my 24-bit SUSIC system. If I start JMRI before I power up the SMINI, the program does not recognize it . I have multiple connections with both Locobuffer USB and Belkin Serial to USB RS232 converters. The Locobuffer will connect but the Smini just flashes the Green LED rapidly. If I shut down power to the SMINI, and close JMRI, THEN restore power to the SMINI and start JMRI, things sync right up.

It might be something in the way Windows handles the comm port or even the drivers to the RS-232 USB converter but this solved my problem.

Good luck,
