Re: Question about sound only decoders
As the SoundTraxx reply to my querry in 2020 didn't seem to cover everyone's concerns, let me clarify.? The TSU-2 decoder does not need a motor or other load to accept programming, that includes reading and writing, and also includes programming on the programming track - I use Digitrax hardware, a PR-3, and JMRI.? I use both the programming track and programming on the main.? The loco in question was a diesel, so no chuffing was affected (generally a timing issue with TSU decoders.)? Obviously, if one wants all the realism available with this modern technology, sound wise, one should put a motor in the B unit (in my case).? The ability to program the device without a motor or resistor is great IMHO!
?
Thanks.

Fred, The signing/notarization of the DMG is not working. Re: JMRI Will Not Start After Upgrade from 5.0 to 5.6
#upgrading
Thanks for all the help.? I removed 5.6 and downloaded and installed 5.8.? During the 5.8 install, the default installation location was "C:\Program Files (x86)\JMRI".? I am pretty sure it was "C:\Program Files" when I did 5.6 because I didn't change it and that's where it was installed.? I now wonder why it used the incorrect default in 5.6, but I suppose that is academic now.
?
However, it still does not work.? The PanelPro icon has
?
Target: ?"C:\Program Files (x86)\JMRI\LaunchJMRI.exe" apps.PanelPro.PanelPro
Start In: ?"C:\Program Files (x86)\JMRI"
?
I can confirm that JMRI is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\JMRI
?
I went into the command window and did LaunchJMRI /debug /noisy apps.PanelPro.PanelPro and this time it brought up a window with a trace.? ? Here are the results of this trace.? I don't see anything that sticks out but perhaps one of the old heads on here can!? The correct user directory is C:\Users\dbpau and there is a JMRI directory there with a profiles.xml file that has a line <profile id="Paul_Family_Railroad.3f61a3e5" path="settings:Paul_Family_Railroad.jmri/" />?and Paul_Family_Railroad.jmri does exist and has my JMRI panel XML file in it.

I’d love to know how much difference moving it to the first startup task makesFrom the JMRi perspective, it depends on several things: - Number of "Table" windows which are running when an XML (panel and objects definitions) file is loaded; - and _how many_ objects need to be added to eact type of "Table"; - and _how_ each of those "Table" windows are "sorted". That last bit is somewhat difficult to quantify. If a "Table" is set to display in ascending "System Address" order, then the extra time required is almost zero. But if _any_ other order is used, then things can get awkward to quantify. It does not help that one can change the "sort order" of a "Table" at the last JMRI run, causing it to affect the load-time on the current load! So the general rule of loading the XML _before opening "Table" windows is the generally-best solution. (Example, if I load a XML before showing Turnout and Sensor tables, my machine takes "X" seconds. If I open Turnout and Sensor tables, and then loaf the panels XML, it can take between the same "X" seconds, or it can take "2X" or "3X" or "4X" seconds, depending on how I had last ordered the Turnouts and Sensors sorting!) Keith, Make the routes dependent on the whether you are running in layout or simulation mode. Create a LogixNG to set an internal sensor based on the CMRI connection type. LogixNG: Set Layout/Sim Mode ??? ConditionalNG: IQC:AUTO:0612 ::: Startup ??????? ! A ??????????? Many ??????????????? ! A1 ??????????????????? If Then Else. Execute on change ??????????????????????? ? If ??????????????????????????? Connection "C/MRI: C/MRI Simulator" exists ??????????????????????? ! Then ??????????????????????????? Set sensor SimMode to state Active ??????????????????????? ! Else ??????????????????????????? Set sensor SimMode to state Inactive ??????????????? ! A2 ???????????????????? Then add the sensor to the affected routes using the veto option. Note: ?For the screenshot purposes I picked a likely route. Re: Question about sound only decoders
I've not noticed a change in volume from going upgrade or down with my Soundtraxx Econami decoders. But, there definitely is one with rapid acceleration or slowing down.? I'm not certain you will see that with a motor in the tender, just running with no load. If the volume change is due to the motor current variation, then it will depend on whether the loading change is similar for the motor in your tender. So, you would want a motor with a flywheel, if the one in the loco has a flywheel. But, I suspect the volume change and braking squeal are really because the speed control command is changing faster than the motor drive speed because of higher accel and decel decoder settings. Cut the throttle quickly and the chug goes away, you'll hear no chugging, just rod clank and probably hear brake squeal. Fun stuff, precisely accurate or not! Don W -- Don Weigt Connecticut |

Re: Question about sound only decoders
I think the issue for some is that to be able to read a Tsunami 2
requires some load like a motor or such to generate the current pulses that make the reading work. It will program fine, you just can't read it. Now will it chuff without a motor, that's kind of a different thing. So it 'works' without a motor but does it do everything the same or not, that's a different question. -Ken Cameron, Member JMRI Dev Team www.jmri.org www.fingerlakeslivesteamers.org www.cnymod.com |

Thanks for all the hints and suggestions.? I did a test fit and was able to get an extra motor into the tender, with the decoder and a sugar cube speaker, so I can solder it all in place, even an ounce of weight, too.? I’ll leave the motor leads for a plug to wire to the engine, too.

It seems a trade off for better sound response.? I suppose also I could just make the headlamp always on, too, so just two extra wires and plan for the connections to be replaced when they break.? The claims of the chuff subsiding when going down hill would be interesting to validate. On Thursday, August 29, 2024, Mick Moignard via <mick=[email protected]> wrote:

I agree with Ken:
?
I question the path. It is showing as:
"C:\Program Files\JMRI\LaunchJMRI.exe" ?but it should be: "C:\Program Files (x86)\JMRI\LaunchJMRI.exe" ?
The? default folder for 32 bit programs on all Windows versions is "C:\Program Files (x86)\". This may not be causing the problem but best to have JMRI installed in the correct folder location to help eliminate possible issues. JMRI may be looking for an item that is not where it should be.
