Re: New user to JMRI Ops Pro requesting assistance
#operationspro
Mel,
You may, of course, employ whichever tools this program makes available (there are many).? If you want to avoid schedules for now, you would still have some options to prevent the industry-to-industry moves. If you want to figure out which locations should take which type of cars, you could limit those car-types from other locations, e.g. you currently have Pratt not servicing Boxcar or HopGrain but do permit HopSand. This is a good example of how you have already placed limitations on locations to prevent certain car-type movements.? If you continue to carefully plan these limitations, you should be able to get your cars to move to Arnold Yard as you would like. So what if you need, say, a Boxcar to be able to travel to either Hanford?or Mina in a loaded state (L), and then return to Arnold Yard in an empty state (E). If you prevent other industries in other locations from "servicing" (allowing) the Boxcars in an (E) state, then the only location that should be found to take them would be Arnold Yard.? So, if you change Mina (PRE Interchange) to allow only Boxcars in (L) state, then the Boxcar (E) from Hanford would not be able to go to that spur. All this results in much planning on your part to get things just right.? If it doesn't bother you where the cars go from one location to another, then not much more need be changed.? Yet if you do want those cars to travel to Arnold Yard before being allowed elsewhere, you should be prepared to do lots of testing and resetting (use BackUp and Restore) as you get the setup dialed in. You can always continue to post here with your results/questions and keep digging into those Build Reports to find the answers, as they "know all and see all...!!!" Happy to help, hope it helps, <Pete Johnson> |

Yes Pete thank you for your advice I did make some of the changes you suggested and it also helped with a few other minor problems I was seeing.
So again thank you and Yes I will keep using the software and will keep asking questions. |

Hey Trackwalker,
I am glad you were able to get the Build Report Detail Level turned up enough so that help could be offered.? I think it was from the lower level of detail that I was missing the whys and wherefores and then of course to have it be such a simple thing as direction !!! Anyway, please be aware that some of the items I mentioned in the analysis of the last Build Report may yet be found to give you some insight, so keep at it, and above all, continue to ask questions.? :-) Happy to help, hope it helps, <Pete Johnson> |

Re: Looking for an HO Overland Medco #4 Willamette...
We would like to point out that this list is for discussions related to JMRI, and is intended to be a place that people, particularly beginners, can turn to for help with their JMRI problems from more experienced JMRI users.
General DCC and model railroading topics should be taken to a more appropriate forum and NOT be posted here. SPAM of any kind, politics, legal issues, and other off-topic matters should NOT be posted to the list and will be subject to deletion by the moderators, as will any responses to such off-topic matters. New members still on moderated status will find that off-topic posts will not be approved for posting, and old members making such posts may find themselves back on moderated status. BUY / SELL and ADVERTISING is NOT PERMITTED Let's keep things simple for all of us, and keep the discussion here on-topic. MFRC522, Ethernet/Serial, Nano/Uno/MegaTom So, how did I get on? Well, interesting results again! Firstly, just the Uno and one reader, no shield attached. The LED blinks once.? In the Serial Monitor I now get 'Ethernet Shield not connected or network unavailable' followed by 'Reader X detected on pin SS Y', So this is good so far. I then offer a tag and It is read correctly. So, that all seems good. Now I close down the IDE and open JMRI with the correct connections. I offer a tag and I do not get anything in the Reporters Table. So I checked the RFID Command Monitor. The Tag is being read and getting to JMRI, but the message I get here is 'Unknown reply of length 16' followed by a sequence of hex pairs. I tried this several times, rebooted the pc, rebooted JMRI, Always the same response. I can see the TX led on the Uno flash when a tag is read.? So now on to the other combination of Uno, Ethernet Shield and one reader. I started with the network disconnected and looked at the IDE Serial Monitor first. Like the previous combo test, I got all the appropriate messages and a tag? read. In JMRI, I got the same as above, no tag read and the same message in the RFID Command Monitor. I now tried the Network Connection. I got 'Reader X detected on pin SS Y' followed by 'Client Connected'. I offered a tag and the Serial Monitor displayed it correctly. Looking at JMRI, the Reporters Table also displayed the tag correctly! I can't why the sketch is doing this? I even changed Com Ports in case it was that. Surely if the IDE Serial Monitor displays the tag data correctly, this is the same as JMRI is receiving?? It is the same for two different Uno's, one with and one without the shield. As another check, I uploaded the known working Multi Reader Serial only sketch. This displays in the Serial Monitor and JMRI correctly. So it's not looking like the hardware, but something in the serial output of the sketch JMRI doesn't like, nut not a problem with the ethernet output! Steve So in your tests, did you look at the JMRI Reporter Table or just the IDE Serial Monitor? I only ask to try and work out if it is something my end. |

Re: Occupancy detection
#digikeijs
There is a Digikeijs group on groups.io ( it now also includes YaMoRC -- a new company started by the original programmer for Digikeijs).
Note that the DR5088RC has a rated sensitivity of 10 to 15 mA. That's quite a bit higher than many other occupancy detectors (BDL168 is rated at about 1.2 mA). It detects engines fine, but it doesn't do well if you use larger resistors on cars. I actually use the DR5088RC as a RailCom reader and add RR-CirKits WatchMan or BOD-8's for the dectection on the same blocks. You can set the Sensor address and the Reporter address for each of the 16 blocks, plus one each for the common block. The documentation and Windows application can be found at? Scott Walton |

Dave,
My code will create Sensors with systemName "xSnnn" and optional userName "xxxxxxxx" based on splitting the text entered into AnyRail Section names. I'm leaving the Block systemName as is. --SteveT |

Steve, Since block system names have no meaning, is the system name for the block going to be used for the sensor system name? Dave Sand ----- Original message ----- From: Steve Todd <mstevetodd@...> Subject: Re: [jmriusers] How to change the systemName of a turnout or block in a script? #scripting Date: Tuesday, May 02, 2023 9:36 AM Cliff, I have the code mostly ready, I'm trying to write up some "how to use" verbiage. I find that putting the system name info last, with a required delimiter, makes this much harder to explain. I think the simplest solution is to put the SystemName first, followed by the (optional) User Name. This avoids the need for a delimiter, as I'll simply use the number to split the two. Examples might be: Blocks: 124 Yard Track 1 105 Staging 1 Stop Block Turnouts: 56 East:Main Crossover 98 Main:MB Samuel Distribution Your thoughts? --SteveT |
I have an ESU command station with the following adapters:
1. LNET converter, Order number: 4 2. EcosDetectorStandard, Order number: 2 3. EsuExtention plugged into the Detector 4. EcosDetectorStandard, Order number: 3 5. EsuExtention plugged into the Detector 6. 5x Digitrax DS64 All are working correctly in the ESU Command Station. I can control all the turnouts from Jmri but can not read the status of the Detectors boards.? The table of sensors has one entry "US201:01"? but it seems its not active. Once that issue is resolved I also need to figure how to address the Extention boards... |

What you are suggesting certainly should require only an example or two to explain.?? This avoids the need for a delimiter, as I'll simply use the number to split the two.For the examples provided in your note, the presence of a string of numeral followed by the first blank as the delimiter provides an easy to recognize token.? That should be OK with most users as the blank following the number would usually be inserted as an almost automatic keystroke typing action and could not get much simpler to understand.?? No matter how we slice and dice this, there is still the expectation that the people in charge of developing the track plan have a good understanding of the AnyRail instructions.? In a club situation with lots of self proclaimed experts, that assumption amounts to "the best-laid schemes o' mice an' men gang?aft?a-gley."?? The AnyRail exported Turnout userNames should be simpler to translate than the Block names turned out to be for me.?? It might be an exceedingly rare prototype situation, but one of our club layout Block userName choices included two instances of the?Low Line AKA the "_" character that caused me to almost completely rewrite my first shared version of the AnyRailBuildBlockSensorList.py script.? And that was without trying to nail down the DCC hardware addresses for the Sensors. Maybe it would have been smarter for me to have just edited that Sensor by hand?? We are still investigating using LCC hardware for Sensors, Turnouts, and Signals and I have a lot of learning to do before venturing into what that kind of translation that technology would involve.?? The approved "final" track plan has had yet two more revisions in the last week, so I am still spinning my wheels and going nowhere.?? Thanks for keeping me informed, Cliff |

Dan,
OMG I have been looking at this thing for like the last six months and I can't believe it was as simple as needing to make sure the location is served by both east and west trains. I just made that change and tried building a train and bam now its allowing cars to be picked up destained for Colfax. Thank you? |

From your build report:
Find destinations for (ATSF 95561) type (Flatcar) load (E) at (Springfield Yard, B Yard T1 (T-567)) Route (T-567) id (98r8) no set outs at location (Shelbina) Searching location (Colfax) route id (98r6) for possible destination Destination (Colfax) does not service Westbound trains Did not assign a destination for car (ATSF 95561) You have a Westbound train (T-567) when it arrives at Colfax, and you've configured Colfax to not allow cars to be set out by a Westbound train. Hi Pete, I am so sorry for the confusion. I've uploaded what I believe are the correct Build Report and Manifest files for the Mina Turn. I did as you suggested and checked both East and West for the Dayton Transfer and it worked! AWESOME!
As for making a schedule to prevent cars from going directly from one industry to another, for now I think it best to keep things as they are until I get more proficient with the program. I can at least at this point build Trains for all four of my Trains so what I would like to do is print out a switchlist and run some Trains to see how it all works unless you feel I'm not there yet. Excited? Yes, very! But want to follow a sensible line of understanding and not get too far ahead of myself. Thank You Pete for your patience and understanding |

having issues with JMRI not routing cars
#operationspro
Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner I have tried the suggestions that were offered on the last build report. It looks like I am still getting the same issue.
so attached is a new build report. Hopefully this can shed some light on the problem. This is for one train but I seem to be having the same issue with several different trains that I build. The issue with this train is that it starts by coming off an interchange track with a train, then runs to our railroads main freight yard were it set outs the entire train, and is suppose to pick up a return train to take back to its home railroad. Currently it starts with the train gets to the yard set outs the entire train and then doesn't pick anything up from the assigned track in the yard. Instead it just sends the locomotive back engine light. |
