Re: Cable Extension ?
Bruce:
NCE runs at a slow data rate well within the RS232 spec for up to a 50' cable run with a decent quality cable. I've installed an almost 50 footer for a friend using a no-name FTDI USB to PC (maybe 3') and the rest RS232 using Cat5e for my wire. Works like a champ Avoid running the RS232 along side any house power wiring or other wiring able to put noise on the RS232... Jim Albanowski |

Bob, There is now a copy of your zip file on my computer, but I am having some difficulties unraveling how the files fit together. It appears from your file named "200206 - RJE - JMRI Files for Debugging\200206 - RJE - JMRI Files for Debugging\DRIVE J\RJE User Files\Wilbury_Spa\profile\profile.xml" that you execute several scripts during the startup process, but evidently load one or more of your panels manually after the startup process has completed. Or maybe one or more of those scripts load panel files. Please explain what is wrong with my summary. For the forensics activities, it is important for me to understand which panel file should be loaded or if multiple panel files are loaded, which order do you follow.
It is not likely that your signal icons problems are due to what you describe here, but the process does seem to allow for some ambiguity as to which of your versions might get left out or overwritten. Extra caution would be in order here.
There are numerous message threads on this groups messages record, but essentially the writers describe some kind of method for copying the folders with locally modified resources back into the "program:" folder. Some do it manually and some have developed elaborate batch or script files. It may take extra effort, but it is much safer to provide the startup and file default portions of the Config Profile to consistently point to your locally modified files.
It is entirely likely that we are looking at a symptom that is being caused by several small errors, rather than some big problem. Cliff |

Re: Cable Extension ?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýBruce, Hi Gang, I am reconfiguring my layout room and will now have a dedicated space on a desk for my laptop. Problem is that it is about 25 feet away from my NCE Powerhouse system. When I started with JMRI a few weeks back, I learned the hard way to follow the suggestions found here and bought a proper FDTI cable. After going back and trying with no success to find that post, I believe It was reported that if I needed to extend that cable, I could use a RS 232 or serial port cable which is a straight pass-thru cable? If you bought the ESU FTDI or RRCirKits FTDI cable, you don't need an RS232 extension cable, but you can add one if necessary. We have also used 10m (30 ft) Active USB Extension cables with these but it must be a cable labelled as "Active". Passive cables usually won't work satisfactorily past 5m. If you have connection problems without the RS232 cable, you may need to make a modification to your Power Pro box connector binding posts. See: <> Dave in Australia |

In both cases they are actually empty (no CVs to change). This behaviour is due to a deficiency in the XML code for this decoder. By deliberate design, custom panes do not participate in empty tab hiding. It's assumed an empty pane created by a developer is there for good reason (e.g. A README pane). If the developer wants a custom pane hidden when empty, this must be done by using include/exclude or qualifier elements in the pane XML. Detailed at: <> Dave in Australia |

SCRIPTING - Can a script obtain the names of classes that are already running
#scripting
While I understand it is possible to use the Thread Monitor to see what classes are already running, is it possible for a script to get access to this same information?
I'd like a script to be able to check if another specific class is already running and take action as required. For example:
If this can't be done directly I can see a way to do it with internal sensors, but the direct approach would be neater.

Here is a copy and paste from a post by Dave Heap
Power Pro CV Limitations ================== Due to a firmware issue, the NCE Power Pro is: - Capable of reading values correctly from any CV in the range 1-1024** inclusive in Program Track mode. - Incapable of writing values correctly to any CV>256 in Program Track mode. The wrong CV is written. For example, a write attempt to CV275 will instead reprogram CV19! - Capable of writing values correctly from any CV in the range 1-1024** inclusive in Program on Main mode. ** If using the Pro Cab, you can only program CVs in the range 1-999 inclusive. You need software like JMRI DecoderPro to access the full 1-1024 range. Notes: 1) This is unrelated to the concept of indexed CVs. Your NCE system is unaware of this concept, everything is just a CV. The indexed concept only exists in the decoder (and JMRI DecoderPro if you use it). 2) JMRI DecoderPro will not attempt to write to any CV>256 in Program Track mode. It protects your decoder from CV corruption. 3) JMRI DecoderPro is able to program CVs>256 in Program Track mode for ESU decoders only. This is because ESU has provided an in-decoder workaround to deal with DCC systems having this problem and JMRI automatically uses this workaround when needed. 4) The original Tsunami decoders are unaffected by this problem. For Tsunami2 and Econami, any attempt to write CVs in Program Track Mode on the Function Map, Sound, Alt Sound Levels, and DDE panes will be blocked by JMRI, but you will need to restart JMRI to continue (I'd like to fix that but it's not easy and I don't have the time). 5) The JMRI workaround with affected decoders is to read and save the roster entry in Program Track, close and reopen in Program on Main mode when changing affected panes. 6) This problem has nothing to do with PTB-100 or any programming track booster. That is related to programming track hardware limitations and not related to the CV>256 firmware issue. It is an unrelated separate question. -- Peter Ulvestad JMRI Users Group Moderator - ( ) Tam Valley Group Moderator - ( ) Sprog-DCC Group Moderator - ( ) Edmonton Model Railroad Association - |

I just uploaded files to the FILES BEING WORKED ON folder (subfolder RJE).? It is a large zip file - about 5 MB so I'm worried I might be hogging too much of the upload files space.? Let me know when I can remove the files and I'll do so as soon as I can. I cannot find a way to direct the location of the icon files away from the main JMRI program file area - can you point me in the right direction?? I can find the listing under "HELP" and where to change a few directories under "PREFERENCES", but don't know how to change where JMRI finds the icon files.? I'll keep poking to see if I can find it. Sent: February 06, 2020 2:24 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [jmriusers] Panel Editor - Signal Heads not able to be Dragged and Dropped from Palette #paneleditor ? Bob, After a lot of interruptions a block of time allowed me to investigate at least some of what you have described. Unfortunately, I am not able to duplicate what you are describing with your icons. You appear to be using custom icons which would make it difficult for us to just examine an uploaded copy of your panel xml file unless you also uploaded all of those icons. Normally we request one to upload the panel into the "Files/Problems being worked on" folder and report back to the thread with a link to the new entry or at least a unique name that we can find to tie it to the message. Additional files in different folders adds some complexity to that effort. Not impossible, but extra bookkeeping is required at both your end and at ours. But before going down that route, there is an "issue" that involves your custom signal icon file location. Please note that this issue may or may not have anything to do with the symptoms that you have described. It is also possible that you have developed a coping mechanism that enables you to do what we always recommend JMRI users to never do. The first icon in your list is identified with this line:
Which indicates that your custom icon, and all the others listed, reside in a folder named _RJE/Signals and is a subfolder of the JMRI distribution folder. Everything in the distribution folder will get overwritten during the next version update. It is strongly recommended that each user keep all custom files in a folder that does not get overwritten. Depending on how one uses those custom files the protective process can be as simple as creating a subfolder of one's JMRI user's folder with something like "resources/icons/_RJE/Signals/" in your case. If the custom files are to be shared then one might use something like a Dropbox location. Often there is some choice that fits one's needs but is in between these extremes. Once that folder is defined, then the options and preferences dialogs within JMRI and the xml files saved will have replaced "program:" with "preference:" or with "profile:" or with "settings:" or maybe a more complicated explicit local hardware or network name. JMRI will then default to that folder location. Numerous other message threads on this list provide details. Save copies with different names early and often as you make modifications. My apologies for this long digression. It will be either late this evening or tomorrow before I can get back to trying to duplicate your symptoms. Cliff |
