Locked Re: Issue with Engine Driver and ESU Mobile Control 2 #enginedriver

Cody,

Was your Father's MCII originally shipped with Android 6.0.1 or was this, somehow, updated?

Only the MCII relies on some custom modules added to the Android core by ESU in order to work with the knob and extra buttons.

In EngineDriver we rely on these modules exposed via the ESU API in order to work with these controls.

For reference, when attempting to update the Android system on my MCII throttle, it will not go further than the 4.1.1 that's already there.

Best regards,

This almost certainly indicates you have an NCE Power Pro system.

Power Pro CV Limitations
==================

Due to a firmware issue, the NCE Power Pro is:
- Capable of reading values correctly from any CV in the range 1-1024** inclusive in Program Track mode.
- Incapable of writing values correctly to any CV>256 in Program Track mode. The wrong CV is written. For example, a write attempt to CV275 will instead reprogram CV19!
- Capable of writing values correctly from any CV in the range 1-1024** inclusive in Program on Main mode.

** If using the Pro Cab, you can only program CVs in the range 1-999 inclusive. You need software like JMRI DecoderPro to access the full 1-1024 range.

Notes:
1) This is unrelated to the concept of indexed CVs. Your NCE system is unaware of this concept, everything is just a CV. The indexed concept only exists in the decoder (and JMRI DecoderPro if you use it).

2) JMRI DecoderPro will not attempt to write to any CV>256 in Program Track mode. It protects your decoder from CV corruption.

3) JMRI DecoderPro is able to program CVs>256 in Program Track mode for ESU decoders only. This is because ESU has provided an in-decoder workaround to deal with DCC systems having this problem and JMRI automatically uses this workaround when needed.

4) The original Tsunami decoders are unaffected by this problem. For Tsunami2 and Econami, any attempt to write CVs in Program Track Mode on the Function Map, Sound, Alt Sound Levels, and DDE panes will be blocked by JMRI, but you will need to restart JMRI to continue (I'd like to fix that but it's not easy and I don't have the time).

5) The JMRI workaround with affected decoders is to read and save the roster entry in Program Track, close and reopen in Program on Main mode when changing affected panes.

6) This problem has nothing to do with PTB-100 or any programming track booster. That is related to programming track hardware limitations and not related to the CV>256 firmware issue. It is an unrelated separate question.

Any connection although good will fail. I think this is where I interjected the power cycle to start the NCE USB Interface again. I noticed that Decoder Pro
aligned itself verses Panel Pro did not.

Thanks for the logs.

I've performed some timing tests using both Mac and Ubuntu to test the power-up delay of the NCE USB and Power Cab.

1) The NCE USB power up cycle.

I made sure I had the following JMRI windows opening automatically and non-overlapping:
- NCE Command Monitor with Show Raw Data and Show Timestamps enabled.
- Send NCE Command, with Binary Enabled and AA entered into the Command Field.
- Single CV Programmer, with mode set to Direct.

After starting JMRI successfully, I turned off the 240V power switch supplying the PCP and waited for all NCE components to be thoroughly shut down.

While watching the seconds on the computer clock, I simultaneously flicked the 240V power on with one hand and with the other I clicked on the Send button in the Send NCE Command window.

The NCE Command Monitor log showed the AA command being sent within the same second I had used on the clock and the 07 03 07 response being returned in less than 10 milliseconds.

This was fully repeatable, even with the Power Cab being unplugged from the PCP.
So there is very little power-up delay within the NCE USB itself, less than 1 second.

2) The combined NCE USB and Power Cab power up cycle.

Before performing the following tests I navigated to the Setup Command Station menu item on the Power Cab throttle, and went through to the "PROCAB POWER UP SECONDS(1-30):" item (available on V1.65 firmware and above) and made sure it was set to "01" (for obvious reasons).

While watching the seconds on the computer clock, I flicked the 240V power on with one hand, waited a few seconds and with the other I clicked on the Read CV button in the Simple Programmer window.

I found I had to wait about 5 seconds between "flick" and "click" in order to get a reliable read of CV 1 in the attached decoder.

3) The time between JMRI startup and Version Report in the Log.

In all cases (with Profile Selector Delay disabled), the interval between " JMRI log " and "NCE EPROM revision = 7.3.7" was less than 5 seconds.

I would expect that interval to be considerably greater with an RPi.

My Conclusions and Speculations

There is no evidence to support the assertion that "The NCE USB Interface has a 20 second lock up cycle."

Some other factor(s) must be in play with Larry and Inubo's RPi situations.

In most cases (but maybe not with the RPi setup) the user would normally power up the NCE hardware well before starting JMRI. If there is simultaneous power-up it would be well worth a user checking the?"PROCAB POWER UP SECONDS(1-30):" setting. (I have no idea how long an RPi takes to boot up, but I'd assume at least 5 seconds).
?
My speculations about possible factors in the situation include:
- The RPi USB behaviour after the JMRI code sets up a connection and tells the driver to ?reset the Baud Rate of the CP2102 chip on the NCE USB. (We've not observed any problem of this sort with Windows/Mac/Ubuntu.)
- The slower processing speed of the RPi.
- The reported difference in behaviour between PanelPro and DecoderPro could be related to Startup Items (or slightly different code paths in JMRI).
- One factor that was mentioned was that the "workaround" is a one-off rather than every time. If that's the case, something happening in JMRI code at first start with the premade image (possibly coupled to processor speed) or to the Auto Configuration used by Steve (although I thought this still occurred with?Auto Configuration disabled. But a lot of this information has been buried in interpretation and speculation rather than simple clear reporting of test conditions and results.

After several unsuccessful attempts, I did the upgrade to 4.18. Did incremental updates per recommendations, and finally arrived at 4.18, which appears to work. Can read and write most pages, but on new Tsunami 2 and Econami programming, the Function Map page appears stuck on writing the first change, of which all appear to be indexed CVs. Doesn't matter which function is changed, it appears unresponsive. A new topic which I'll search for guidance.

Marc,

Yeah, its all kinda of variation with the jumpers, Version and sequences that contributes to the lock out?
of the NCE USB interface. It will go into a 20 lockout cycle which throws you for a loop. Now, I see
why the disconnect helped. It prevented the lock cycle from happening on the initial turnup.

The other twist was Decoder Pro responds differently than Panel Pro.?

I think a RPi4 NCE JMRI readme is in order. If no one else does it I guess I'll do it and let someone verify it..

Notice log 2 and 3.

Log 2 is telling us something. Notice how the EPROM update is reported last. Look at Log 3 and the EPROM is reported
in the beginning of the LOG.?

If I recall correctly....when I did the power cycle it reported the EPROM in the beginning of the log.

This is what the log doesn't reveal. The NCE USB Interface has a 20 second lock up cycle. During that time the NCE USB Interface seems to be inaccessible.?
Any connection although good will fail. I think this is where I interjected the power cycle to start the NCE USB Interface again. I noticed that Decoder Pro
aligned itself verses Panel Pro did not.

The image that Steve provides for us Starts Panel Pro.?

In any case this is what I got. If you go back in this thread you will see that I said I did this like an ant and it could be better ways. If you ever watch ants
some times they will travel ten feet up the wall over two and back 5 and be 4 feet from the original point.

If we can get a procedure down where anyone can get going on the first try then I'm happy.
I need to get off here and catch up.

Locked Re: Layout Editor: issue connecting two turnouts #layouteditor

Again I don't plan on changing anything other than showing a measured distance onscreen while editing; any lengths that you've setup in blocks, routes, etc. shouldn't be effected. And it will be 100% opt-in.
Plus it's pretty low in my queue right now¡ just a thought in the back of my head.

Hi Bob.

I was pretty sure I? had installed the 64 bit version and so I went searching for it to verify that before I said anything. It turned out that bits and pieces were here and there, but obviously a failed install, but with no warning. So, I re-installed it, putting it where I wanted it. It did install correctly there. I installed version 8.0.2210.11/ JMRI finds it just fine. Now I have to re-learn the layout panel procedures.

Peace,

Mike G.

Is it possible that you installed the 32-bit version of Java? Or installed it just for one user, instead of for everybody on the machine?

Although I'm not a Windows expert, once Java is installed it usually becomes available as a standard command.

Hi Larry

?

The issue that was fixed with the resistors on the Power Cab Panel (PCP), was due to different Part Nos of the RS485 Transceiver.

A simple test to see if you have the transceiver problem is:

Plug another Throttle into the R/H Socket and see if it operates a loco.

If the loco operates there is NO problem with the Power Cab or PCP.

If it does NOT operate then the Power Cab has the ¡°problem¡± Transceiver.

Solder the two resistors that Mark Gurries¡¯s discussed on his page at:

?

Larry also can you disconnect the RPi from the Power Cab then start up JMRI.

If you see the 2 messages turn RED after 30 or so seconds.

Select the Help Tab then the System Console.

Take screen shot of the beginning of the ¡°display and paste it into a ¡°Reply¡± of this message, (not into some page somewhere that I could not access).

If the messages remain Green, then JMRI and the Power Cab are communicating.

?

Looking forward to your reply.

?

Regards

Marcus

First off I want to thank Inobu and Dave for their input, time, and dialog on this subject. ?I had no idea it would create this type of interaction. ?While I'm pretty good with computers and can follow some of the thread suggestions, I am clearly a novice with JMRI. ?I came across it when I started getting back into model railroading a few years ago. ?My prior experience was decades ago and non-DCC. ?I had JMRI running no problem, with the exact same NCE hardware on a Lenovo laptop years ago. ?The computer crashed and I never got JMRI to run on another laptop. ?Always had problems with the SILabs driver and COM port conflicts on several laptops and even a desktop running Win 7, Win 8, or Win 10. ?So, I tried it on an old Apple, couldn't get it working. ?Purchased a RPi4 and thought with Steve's image it would be trivial and basically plug and play. ?I was about to return the Pi4 but posted this in hopes of getting it running without any trouble. ?Clearly, that's been far from the case.

Now that I've started this, I'd like to try and contribute to a) learn what I'm doing wrong, and b) hopefully help others who are as frustrated as I am.

To that effect, I'll offer up some data based on what I tried.
1) Inobu, I tried your timing about what to start, when to plug in and it didn't work for me
2) Dave, thanks for pointing out I may have an inferior PCP and that may be the root cause. ?I'll contact NCE for a replacement since I don't trust myself soldering resistors. ?My PowerCab is 1.65
3) I don't have a ttyUSB0 choice in my preferences. ?Only ttyAMA0 and ttyS0. ?So, that might be an issue itself
4) I did observe something upon startup of JMRI and that is the message bar at the bottom of the screen was green for about 5 seconds and said there was a connection, then it turned red. ?
5) I'll attach a screenshot and log file when able.

Thanks again to everyone involved in this.

-Larry

Thanks for making the screenshots. Unfortunately most/many of us can't view them because we seem to need a Box Account to view them.

Please create a folder in the?ProblemsBeingWorkedOn?folder of the Files area of this group and upload to there:

Thanks.
Rather than overwriting the files in the JMRI directory, please rename or delete the JMRI folder before extracting again. Certain files are not overwritten, resulting in unexpected behavior, which might be the problem you're experiencing.
