Re: "Timeout talking to command station" and "Failed to get response from Command Station"

Hello,
I have a Piko 56403 decoder connected to my Piko model and constantly getting a 308 error (No acknowledge from locomotive) when attempting to program and/or run the loco. I'm using an arduino UNO loaded with DCC++ and an arduino motor shield.? The Vin on the motor shield has been cut so that I can power the tracks with a 15V power supply using the method stated in the DCC ++ help guide and the relevant youtube videos.? The LED's on the motor shield respond in the manner described in the DCC++ help guide - although I feel they could be brighter and I get just over 1V across the terminals when JMRI is powered on. All software has been downloaded within the past 2-weeks, and as far as I can see are all at latest versions. The Piko 56403 decoder is not available in the JMRI selection list, however the 56400 and 56401 are.? The Piko website states the the 56403 replaced the 56401 recently and I tried that just in case - also to no avail. Unfortunately I do not have another decoder or motor shield to try and thus am not sure what I might have done wrong - I've disconnected cables and decoder, watched the videos and reread the help guides a number of times and end in the same position. Does anyone have any tips and advice on how to proceed? T.I.A. |

Re: "Timeout talking to command station" and "Failed to get response from Command Station"
Hi, Marc --
Thanks for the reply. >From what I read, you are sharing the Locobuffer-USB between the two computers and it has faillled. Not "sharing" per se, but going between two computers, one at a time to make sure one of the computers isn't the culprit. I did what you said: >If the window has 8? blank boxes, the Locobuffer-USB is not receiving power from the LOCONET side (Command Station Loconet connection). Make sure the Command Station is powered up. If CS is powered , replace Loconet cable. The green "power" light on the LocoBuffer comes on when I plug the cable into the Command Station..? In addition I'm using an external wall wart to power the LocoBuffer.? (This is a LocoBuffer II with a serial-to-usb cable; RRCir-Kits shipped it with the "LocoBuffer-USB driver disk" so I'm assuming it's considered a LocoBuffer USB).? ?Still, I get 8 blank boxes.? I've tried 5 different LocoNet cables, all with the same result.? And as before, tried all of this on two different computers. Is it possible that both Command Stations are somehow faulty? Or should I just pop for a brand new LocoBuffer USB? ? -Gerry |

Folks,
I have updated the OS using apt update and apt upgrade; I just want to be sure of a couple of things. our JMRI folder is here :/opt/JMRI and the settings, panels, etc. are in /home/jmri/.jmri As I understand it, to upgrade the JMRI I should extract the zipped file into a new folder like /opt/JMRI_NEW, rename the old folder, and change the new folder to JMRI? we run faceless with auto start. Anything I should do regarding this? Thanks in advance, Carl M.? Suncoast Model RR Club Largo, FL |

You have to set up the transit indicating where the safe sections are. These are normally the passing places on a single track main. Steve G. On July 26, 2019 10:03:04 PM EDT, Roger Merritt <merritt_roger@...> wrote: Steve, --

Jim,

This particular problem is mitigated greatly by the same (read CVs rather than sheets) workaround described below. 2) Because of a known (but as yet unresolved) race condition with certain decoder settings variables in JMRI code: (a) Use "Read Full Sheet" on the CVs pane instead of "Read All Sheets". It is less likely to cause errors when reading a decoder with lots of CVs. Once finished, some may be missed (displayed in red). Use "Read Changes on Sheet" as many times as needed until no red items remain. (Hint: Click on the Status column in the CVs pane until you see a down arrow. All the Red items will then be at the top.) (b) After you make changes on a programming sheet, don't use Write/Read changes on that programming sheet. Instead, switch to the CVs pane and use Write/Read changes on (the CVs) sheet. The result is the same but it will never trigger the race condition. You may also see a number of messages in the JMRI System Log like this: "ERROR - Variable=xxxxxx; Busy goes false with state IDLE" Ignore these as they don't indicate a real error, we'll fix the problem in a later JMRI release. |

Loksound 3.5 Won't Read Full/All
Hi,
? I was helping a friend with his layout today.? He has NCE Powerhouse Pro, a Win 7 laptop with the latest JMRI, and a Keyspan USB to Serial adapter.?? ? I could not get it to reliably read a 3.5 decoder on the Program Track.? It read other? decoders fine (Tsunami 1, QSI, etc.).? I could get it to read "one CV at a time" ... as long as the CV had a reasonably small value ... by switching the track to main, letting the sound fire up and stabilize, then switching back to the programming track and immediately doing a single CV read.? But it would not do a Read All Sheets nor even a Read Full Sheet for a small sheet such as Basic.? I tried all three programming modes (Paged, Direct, and even Register) and none of? them was any better than any other (one CV at a time). ? I seem to remember that these decoders need some "trick" - or is it that they need a programming track booster?? Does anyone remember the trick? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? - Jim |

"Timeout talking to command station" and "Failed to get response from Command Station"
Several months ago, JMRI, LocoBuffer II-USB and my Digitrax Command Stations were working just fine to program locos.? The only thing that I know changed was that the computer got a Windows update or two.
The setup:? I have both a Digitrax DCS100 and DB 150.? The 100 runs the layout; the 150 is used solely for loco programming.? I have a stand-alone track here on my desk for programming and never program on the layout.? I'm running JMRI 4.14 on Win 10, Java version 1.8.0_221 on each of two computers (desktop and laptop).? I have a LocoBufferII-USB that's been plugged into the same USB port constantly so I can run JMRI Ops without having to stop and plug it in. The problem: whenever I try to send a proramming sheet to the loco -- either in "on the main" or "programming track" I'm getting a "Timeout talking to command station (306)" error.? Whenever I try to open a JMRI throttle, I get a "Failed to get response from command station" error. What I've tried: - Uninstalled previous version of JMRI, downloaded 4.14, installed it - Uninstalled Java, downloaded new one, reinstalled it. - Uninstalled LocoBuffer via Device Manager, downloaded drivers from RRCir-Kits, and reinstalled it. - When I "Monitor LocoNet," I get no LocoNet traffic on the screen when I'm on my desktop computer even though the screens say I'm connected to COM 3, and the connection message at the bottom of the programming screens is green and says I'm connected.? HOWEVER I do get LocoNet traffic on the screen when I'm on the laptop on COM 4.? That, too, says I'm successfully connected. - I've tried programming the loco from each of the computers and still get the "Timeout" error. - I've tried programming the loco with each of the command stations and still get the "Timeout" error - I've tried programming a different loco (one that I'd successfully used this same setup to program before) and still get the "Timeout" error. - I've tried 4 different cords that link the LocoBuffer to the command station and get the "Timeout" error with all of them (I know at least one of them works because I robbed it from my layout for this test, and it's a "reversing" cord). - I'm able to program the loco manually successfully using my DT400, and am able to read back CVs on the DT400 when using the DCS100 To me, it almost sounds like the LocoBuffer or both of the command stations went bad, but you folks know a TON more than I do, so any help or suggestions would be appreciated.? Thanks. |

Hi, Jason,
As I mentioned in my earlier post above (162059), I've got Arduino code that runs on an ESP32 chip, that creates a wifi server and then responds to client requests by switching servos on points. I think the ESP could support 16 servos as you want, but I'd have to check. ?The HiLetGo ESP I use is ?8.14 on Amazon and cheaper off AliExpress. ?Is that worth considering? ?I'm happy to share the code. ?(I don't know the RPi so don't know if Arduino sketches will run off it.)? (I'm a programmer from the 70s whose now having fun but struggling to learn electronics in my retirement...) Regards, Les |

Re: JMRI is broken (?)
Hi, Either that (preferences set to 'Internal') or there is a simulator connection. Both are, by design, returning the value 123 for whatever you ask of the command station. Wouter On Fri, 26 Jul 2019 at 19:14, David Klemm <davidklemm7511@...> wrote:

Richard,
?
I have a project I have been working off and on with for the last few months using a Raspberry Pi Zero W and custom 16 channel PWM board I created, similar to the one you are using.? The difference is I wanted to make the power interface a little more easy to work with.
?
My general goal is to create 16 channel "nodes" for driving 16 servo turnouts around a layout through an IP/web based control interface.
?
I have linked to a few pictures.? I am working on the code in Python.? So far my limited coding ability has been my major blocking point for really getting this working the way I want it to.? I'm having a hard time getting getting any web access to control the IO pins directly, to talk with the PWM controller.? I'm really a hardware guy, forced to write crummy code :o)

Hello I seems like others have a similar issue... seeing the Messoth 123 decoder only. I am using NCE. Once I went BACK to Wangrow the issue rectified. Apparently not a software issue (???). The only change I made was to the: "early 2004" setting and possibly the port number. Seems like I had a problem "changing/setting" the preference buttons?? If you are using NEC what model number and are you still having the problem? Has anyone had the problem using Digitrax? Command station? |
