Re: Digitrax PR4 Stand Alone Programming Track Issues
Congratulations Steve, glad to hear it. Maybe you can help my friend John Umberger, also posting in this thread, to get his PR4 to work. We have tried everything, we tjink. Maybe you can point out something that we missed.

I just took a look and the PowerCab doesn't have the concept of track power
being on/off. At least the notes I have don't identify any command for track power. If that is true, JMRI shouldn't even bother you with the option of an on/off if it can't work. But I'd want somebody else to verify this. -Ken Cameron, Member JMRI Dev Team www.jmri.org www.fingerlakeslivesteamers.org www.cnymod.com www.syracusemodelrr.org |

Plug your device into your Mac. Go to "System Information" from Apple Menu->About This Mac->More Info->System information. Look in the USB section, expand all sections under controllers and hubs and see what devices are present. Unplug your device, select Refresh from the System Information menus and see what device has disappeared. Plug your device back in, refresh again and see what reappears. Repeat until you see what is changing. If there is no change, there must be a hardware problem external to your Mac, such as a faulty USB cable, connector or device and there is no point going any further until your Mac can see the physical device. Once you have seen the device in System Information, (it should report the Manufacturer name so you know where to go to get drivers) you will quite likely have to install Mac drivers for it (although some do not need extra drivers, see your documentation). If unsure, try the next step anyway. In High Sierra and above, you must open System Preferences->Privacy and Security and allow the kernel extensions (drivers) you installed to be loaded, or they will not be used. Unplug your device. Open a window of the Terminal utility (from /Applications/Utilities), copy and paste the following command in EXACTLY (including spaces and punctuation) then press Enter. while : ;do clear;ls -lt /dev|head;i=$((i+1));echo $i;sleep 1;done This command should show about 10 lines of output and then sit looping, with a counter incrementing every second. Plug your device back in and wait a few seconds. Two new items with names like cu.xxx and tty.xxx should appear in the list. They should disappear if you unplug your device. If this does not happen, you do not have the correct drivers installed for your device and you will need to solve that before proceeding further. Once you have found your device, write down the name you see.You want the cu.xxx version not the tty.xxx version. If you have got this far you know your device is be being seen by the Mac, that it has a matching driver installed and the name of the connection port "cu.xxx" you need to select in JMRI. If you cannot get this far, there's no way JMRI can find your device until the driver issue is resolved. Dave in Australia |

Yeah, I'm one of those who claims the PR4 works, because mine Just Does. And no, I don't use it in "connected mode" through a command station for programming. As a matter of fact, the programming outputs on my DCS100 haven't been connected to anything since back when the PR3 was first introduced. I have two JMRI profiles. My preferences are set so Decoder Pro launches using the profile with the PR4 as a stand-alone programmer, and Panel Pro launches using the profile with the PR4 as a LocoNet pass-thru device. So depending on what task I want to do, I just launch one or the other as appropriate, and away I go. Oh, and as far as all the gibberish about needing a different power supply with the PR4 - That's one (of several) of the differences between it and the PR3. Using only the included PS14, my PR4 easily and reliably reads and writes CV's to Tsunami's, Tsunami 2's, Econami's, Sound Value's, TCS WOW (V3 and V4), Soundtraxx LC's, ESU Loksound, and of course Digitrax sound decoders. And it does it a lot faster than my PR3 (powered by an 18VDC regulated supply) ever did! Steve "Breezlys"? ? |

Re: INFERNALS
Don W,
If you are building panels using Internal devices because you don't know which real system you will use, then assigning 'usernames' to each item will save you a lot of effort later. If all the panels use the usernames from the tables (for turnouts and sensors) then later when you start getting real hardware, there is a step to 'move' the username from one systemName to another. All the places using the username won't notice the change. Keep in mind that many panels do have logical things that use Internal for their system. These are virtual items sometimes used in control panels or maintaining logic states. Now the normal default for a CMRI connection is 'C', EasyDCC seems to user 'E'. -Ken Cameron, Member JMRI Dev Team www.jmri.org www.fingerlakeslivesteamers.org www.cnymod.com www.syracusemodelrr.org |

Since you have a BDL168, you have the chance to test at a couple of places: 1st on the board. Using the tester on the header block, it will light/dark the leds to show where the detectors think something exists. 2nd is looking in the sensor table. Here is the first place a detector shows up in JMRI. Everything else watches the sensors. 3rd is the block table. It is driven from the sensors. 4th is the panel. It follows the blocks. ? So start at the first stage and walk your way though. One note: faulty gaps or mis-placed feeders will cause some weird detection issues now and then. So where the problem exists may not be isolated to a single block but be an interaction of more than one. Insuring they are isolated (remove a connection at the BDL for example) should kill the track power at that, and only, that block. ? -Ken Cameron, Member JMRI Dev Team www.jmri.org www.fingerlakeslivesteamers.org www.cnymod.com www.syracusemodelrr.org ? ? ? ? ? ? |

In Simulator Profile all is good, I can switch power On and Off without problem all be it only simulated. In Sprog Programmer and Command Station Profiles I have no problems all works as expected. In Digitrax PR3 Programmer Profile I again have no problems all works as expected. I have looked through the Preferences in all Profiles and can see no differences other than connections. After playing with this problem I am able to switch power On in Power Cab Profile by clicking the power button and then clicking any button in a JMRI or WiThrottle throttle, I then click the power button again and it shows Unknown until I click any JMRI or WiThrottle throttle button then it changes to Off. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Scott, I just got my PR4 back from Digitrax in Panama City after an EXTENDED stay due to Hurricane Michael.? They advised that they tested my unit over a period of time and could find no issues.? They also advised that they do not support JMRI. ? I have been following numerous posts over the past week or so from other PR4 users with similar problems. It seems that the general consensus is that the PS14 Power Supply, while powerful enough for what Digitrax intended, ??is not powerful enough for our programming needs and an upgrade to a 16 or 18 Volt unit will probably yield better results.? I have ordered a new 16 Volt unit from an online electronics source and I am not going to even install my PR4 until I have the new power supply in hand. ? If you do send your unit back to Digitrax, I was advised by them earlier that they would not even be looking at new work until sometime in February.? That may have changed but you should probably be prepared for an extended wait if you go that route. ? Best, John U. ? ? ? Sent from for Windows 10 ? From: scottgubanyar@...

I recently entered the world of JMRI and am having some issues programming decoders.? Digitrax DN163K2 (Kato SD 80MAC), Digitrax SDXN146K2 (Kato SD 80MAC), Digitrax DN163KOA (Kato Alco PA-1/ PB-1), SDN144KOA (Kato Alco PA-1), and I have a couple unknown make and model decoders that were pre-installed that I have tried to read.? I have multiples of each decoder that I have tried. I have been able to program a couple decoders but have been experiencing the following issues in no obvious order.? Because the issues occur intermittently, I have not been successful in isolating a specific cause.? Problems occur with both read and write actions. ¡¤?????? A new decoder will not acknowledge using the new loco readback. ¡¤?????? Using new loco read back or read all sheets from a roster entry a Previously programmed (using decoder pro) decoder will not acknowledge ¡¤?????? Previously programmed (using decoder pro) decoder will not acknowledge or run on the mainline, as if no connection to the track. ¡¤?????? Previously programmed (using decoder pro) decoder will not acknowledge but will run fine as programmed on the mainline. ¡¤?????? A decoder will acknowledge and accept programing but will stop acknowledging in the middle of write all sheets or write changes on sheets. ¡¤?????? JMRI will indicated that the programmer is not present or is busy when attempting to read or write a decoder. ¡¤?????? JMRI will fail to recognize the PR4 but the device manager shows the device for COM port 4 working correctly.? ¡¤?????? The oddest thing is, all these problems will cease momentarily and a decoder will read and write but these functioning periods are few and far in-between. ¡¤?????? After attempting programming with JMRI via the PR4, the Digitrax DCS210 programming track reads back No AK (No acknowledgment or No Decoder) when I attempt to program a new address.? I did this as part of the trouble shooting just to see if the other programming track would work.? It works, but not with anything that has been on the JRMI and PR4 programming track. My Trouble Shooting ¡¤?????? I have tried two different PC, both with the same issues listed above. ¡¤?????? I have restarted the PCs several times during trouble shooting. ¡¤?????? I have deleted the PR4 from the device manager and removed JMRI and have re-installed both on both computers with same results more than one time. ¡¤?????? I have cleaned wheels, cleaned contacts, soldiered connections, changed decoders and even have tried to connect the lead wire from the PR4 directly to a decoder¡¯s contacts. ¡¤?????? I have attempted to read two decoders that I previously programed and speed matched successfully using JMRI but neither will acknowledge at this time. ¡¤?????? When attempting some of the above I will sometimes get flashing and clicking of the locomotive as if it were acknowledging and accepting programming but still get an error message that indicates the opposite. ¡¤?????? I have tried input voltages from 14 to 20 using the above listed power supplies.? ¡¤?????? I have multiples of the same decoders and have tried installing new ones and swapping them from loco to loco with no success. ¡¤?????? I have installed the Digtrax Soundloader program, it worked for one decoder but now is unable to see any decoder I place on the programming track.? Sometimes My conclusion is that something is wrong with the PR4 and it needs sent to Digitrax for testing.? Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be going wrong before I ship this thing off?

Now I am curious about your intended project. I take a minimalist approach to Java development tools: Git, Ant, BBEdit and Dash. Since you are using Linux, BBEdit and Dash are not available. BBEdit is a great editor and Dash is a documentation tool that provides access to the Javadocs for both Java and JMRI. I started out using GitHub Desktop but it hid too much information. Since I use macOS, I now use the Git command line tools and Ant to do the compilation. I do have NetBeans installed if I ever get desperate for breakpoints, etc. Dave Sand On Jan 5, 2019, at 2:55 PM, whmvd <vandoornw@...> wrote: |

Re: Digitrax PR4 Stand Alone Programming Track Issues
Hate to rain on your parade, but I have a friend who experienced exactly the same symptoms. He sent his PR4 back to DT, where it was for quite? long while due to the hurricane, but they finally sent it back saying they could not find anything wrong with it. There are some who claim that it DOES work, although I suspect they may be using it in the connected mode and programming through a DCS base station. Another person on the forum insists that there is no difference for JMRI between a PR3 and the PR4. However, for my friend, we were able to program normally using my PR3, but as soon as we replaced it with his PR4 we were not able to program. So something is different in that hardware.
DT will say that they do not support JMRI and their testing is using the DT SoundLoader software. It would be nice if one of the JMRI gurus in the forum could look into this problem, perhaps give those experiencing issues some instructions on capturing logging data to see what is going wrong. -- Stefan Bartelski Home layout: The Blue Ridge Line, an HO representation of the L&N Etowah Old Line from Etowah to Elizabeth, set in 1986 9under construction) Modular Layout: Shoofly module of the Country RRoads Modular group |
