Locked UPgrade to 4.8

Hi,I am using windows 10, running JMRI 4.6 and a Digitrax DCS 240. I am trying to upgrade to 4.8.Once I go through all the steps and the short cut is on my desktop, I'm not able to open it. After clicking on it nothing happens.Checking device manager I am using comport 3.?
Does anyone have any ideas regarding what I can do to resolve this problem??
Thanks,Gary Heimerl

Got it transferred. Everything seems to be OK so far. Hot in the
train room so will work so more in the morning.

4.xml sounds like the contents for one specific locomotive. Those files are usually named for the locomotive ID, with a .xml extension.

Move all of those you can find to the ¡°roster¡± directory in your preferences, then select ¡°Rebuild roster index¡± in DecoderPro. That¡¯ll recreate the index in a separate file called ¡°roster.xml¡± and make it possible to see the contents of all those specific-decoder files.

To move the roster to a new computer do I just exchange the 4.xml

roster.xml?

In order to continue troubleshooting without having the delete/reinstall
under your regular login you might try right-clicking the JMRI icon and
selecting Run As Admin and see if you can get JMRI to run for you while you
ate running under your normal account. You may have to login with your
admin credentials when you do that but it would only be for the one JMRI
process.

2. WILL run under the ADMIN windows login user.
3. Can SEE everything but when printing from a selected loco in the
roster, I get to the preview of selecting functions or CV's and I try to
print all CV's but all I get are the same "ant tracks" too small to read..
I cannot even use a magnifying glass to guess as to what size the font is.
Again tried landscape and portrait modes.. no change.
Another person here suggested saving my roster data then removing all
traces of JMRI and starting over with just version 4.8.
I don't know if the two problems are related to each other, the ADMIN run
versus the no run under my login and the printing, but the printing problem
can only be tested under ADMIN since I obviously can't run JMRI under my
login even though that is where I downloaded and installed it.
I'm not sure what sort of data to try to supply folks here. I am NOT a

dark!!

Dave, Nice one.. Thanks for the tip. I found the file log4j-1.2.17.jar in the jmri\lib folder. I then copied that file to the JMRI folder and renamed it log4j.jar and that fixed the issue. Mental note to self to do this each time I update JMRI..
Thanks again.

Happy Day to ALL HERE!!

Thanks so very much to all who helped to solve my screwy setup of JMRI/DecoderPro 3.
In the hopes this may help in the future for anyone having the weird print problems I was experiencing, here is what finally fixed it on all 3 of my printers.
1. Under general print settings of your PRINTER, select Normal and Letter size in Portrait mode.
2. go to Layout of your printer and be sure to select "TO FIT".
This will get you a normal print of the CV's and summary like any other print job.
WHY all three printers had to have these settings manually changed just for JMRI or maybe DecoderPro 3,
I don't know. I'm sure one of you programmers out here can find the line of code that would make it print under normal auto settings of any printer.
All I can say is I now can read the printouts without a magnifying glass and trying to quess as to what was there. I have average eyesight ands when printing out any other items off my computer, THIS was the first that needed special attention.
I would regard this as a small BUG in the program and I do hope one of the programmers will take a look at this. Yes it's not a major melt down, but it is annoying to say the least as far as this USER non-programmer goes.
Once again, I wish to thank Dave, Stan and others for taking the time to look at this and help me get it fixed.

Best Regards,

The safest procedure to transfer roster entries is to go to the "Help->Locations->Open Roster Location" menu item. There will be a "roster" folder and a "roster.xml" (simply an index file) in the window that opens. Put the individual xxx.xml roster entry files into that "roster" folder.

Then you can use "Rebuild Roster Index" to create a new "roster.xml" index file from all the files in the "roster" folder.

Locked Re: DDA40X Dual DCC Controllers won't work

You are obviously not programming both decoders correctly.

Since you say the two decoders and motors are completely isolated from each other (connected to separate bogies), there is no need to use decoder locking at all.

- Put the front bogie only on the the program track. Disable decoder locking in that decoder and program it as desired, with the desired 4 digit loco address.
- Test that part of the loco (bogie 1, decoder 1 and motor 1). Get that right before doing anything else.
- Put the rear bogie only on the the program track. Disable decoder locking in that decoder and program it as desired, with the same 4 digit loco address as decoder 1
- Test that part of the loco (bogie 2, decoder 2 and motor 2). Get that right before doing anything else.
-Put your entire loco in contact with the track and it should run fine.

- Once you have finished all your setting up, I would reconnect the two bogies so you get reliable pickup and don't have one dragging another.
- As Walt says, why did you use two decoders? Simply paralleling the two motors onto one decoder is a commonly used technique and works fine, even with BEMF (provided the motors are identical models).
- If the answer to the above was "excessive current draw", you would have been far better off to use a LokPilot V4.0 as your rear motor driver. The CVs in a LokPilot V4 are an identical subset of the CVs in a LokSound Direct or V4. So you could simply program both in parallel (once you have read and stored all CVs from the Sound Decoder) and then written them to the Silent Decoder (the unsupported ones are simply ignored). The LokPilot decoders are deliberately designed to match well with the LokSound decoders.

When I program both decoders to the 4 digit loco address only the sound decoder will drive it's motors
When I assign the secondary decoder a separate 4 digit address and consist it with the first decoder, only the first decoder motor works.

Rick,

I don't use "Import Roster". With neither DecoderPro or PanelPro running (both shutdown), I copy the individual roster xml files to the roster folder, start DecoderPro and select "Actions >> Recreate Roster Index".

Locked Re: roster

"roster.xml" does not contain all your loco roster entries. It is simply an index file (containing a few key elements) of the individual "xxxx.xml" roster entry files in the "roster" folder, which is found in the same place as "roster.xml".

You need the "roster" folder, with all its individual "xxxx.xml" roster entry files. Then you use "Rebuild roster index" to create a new "roster.xml".

Transferring just "roster.xml" will make all your locos seem to be in your roster, but all the data (CV values etc.) will be missing and these entries for non-existent files will disappear next time JMRI rebuilds the roster index.

Ken... following Dave's instructions I now have JMRI working under both the ADMIN and my windows profiles.
I did save the old Roster entries which have extensions of .xml and .xml.bak. I only have the two locos in a roster as of now. I tried doing the import roster and the rebuild roster but nothing happens. I have moved the actual files into the Roster directory under My_JMRI_Railroad but still the roster comes up blank. I believe at this point I will have to use the two locos on the programming track to rebuild the roster. I don't know why the roster won't rebuild with the back-up files. I have also used the import roster feature but again nothing happens.
At this point, my one problem has been fixed in that I can now run Decoder Pro under my own windows sign-in.
After I rebuild the roster with the actual locos using my SPROG, then I will try to do the print out of the loco CV's and the Summary.
Wish me luck!!
I'll keep you posted...

You are missing the file called "log4j.jar"
Been there done that as the saying goes.
The latest JMRI versions no longer load with that file as it is no longer needed by JMRI I've been told.

You should have this file in a saved JMRI version. Find it, copy it, place it on your desktop in a folder so when you load never JMRI versions, you can always add the log4j.jar file.

I know this might sound odd, but what are your settings for the printer set for. I know printers do not like "fast draft" when printing things from JMRI. Normal always works.

I think making sure JMRI is correctly installed is important right now.
Having to run via admin isn't right. What happens when you try run JMRI from

Jon M,

I suspect that is for a loco number 4. It is the loco entry in the roster.
Opening the file with a text editor should show the top of the file. If the
first couple of lines show something about 'locomotive' then it is a loco.
But if the first couple of lines talk about 'roster', then it is a roster
index. You don't want to move that, use the 'Rebuild roster index' to make
sure it matches the contents of the roster directory.

Locked JMRI 4.8 Panel load error

Testing JMRI 4.8 I tried to load a panel that works correctly in 4.2.1 and gets a Panel Load error message box in 4.8. Checking the System console I find an error message about a failure creating a Signal Mast due to a missing Signal Head. Checking the Signal Head table I find that the Signal Head is not missing and the Signal Mast in question does reference it correctly. What I did eventually realize is that the User Name for the Signal Head is written as 2 character strings separated by 2 spaces, eg. 1S4 B. It is referenced this way by the Signal Mast definition (I examined the XML file to be sure) the same way, eg. 1S4 B. I have many Signal Heads with similar names but the parts are only separated by 1 space. This one (actually I found 2) names with the double space was created accidentally this way but all the internal references used it that way. Since it is a username, I can't see it as any kind of violation.

This has worked Okay for several previous versions of JMRI but now fails in 4.8. Why?

Dale Gloer
