Locked Re: Signal Heads without Turnouts

_Don,

Your concern is valid.? That is a major flaw of ABS with bi-directional running.? It led to the creation of APB - Absolute Permissive Blocks.? ABS protects against following moves.? APB protects against following moves and opposing moves.? There are some good web sites that discuss the differences, strengths, and weaknesses.? Or see Dr. Bruce Chubb's books or articles in Model Railroad Craftsman.

One thing that always concerns me is race conditions. If both trains enter the same block from opposite ends simultaneously, both would think they had the right of way. I don't see a simple way around that. Perhaps that's why the signalling tutorial someone posted online had two blocks with stop signals between trains. I'll have to think about whether that's really a solution. It just means the two trains would simultaneously get caution signals. But that seems to be enough, although I haven't studied it

Just to add to what I said above with the panels loaded I can bring up my sensor table and toggle between inactive and active and it shows the correct color changes (yellow red) on my track icons on the CPE panel. I've been doing this all along to check that I have the correct sensor blocks assigned to my track sections so there does not appear that there is a broken link between the two. I still think that its a code issue. loading that one pane.

The other advantage of more signals than turnouts (dividing a single track into multiple signaled parts) is one train could follow another more closely. Extreme example: a single block mainline on an transcontinental route: only one train allowed on the whole 3,000 miles of track!

Did you use a memory stick for your E drive?

To create a new profile, under the main menu, Edit, select Preferences...

And in the Preferences window, select Config Profiles, then "New", and enter a name for your profile. Press "OK", and then "Save".

That will restart the program will a new profile.? From there you can try again. If you have a backup of your operations, you can restore.

Thanks, Ken. Lots of good info in your message. You do have a way of describing things clearly, too, which is much appreciated.

The basic hardware signaling system I built for a friend, based on magazine articles, must have been ABS. As you say, all it really could do was protect the trains.

One thing that always concerns me is race conditions. If both trains enter the same block from opposite ends simultaneously, both would think they had the right of way. Locked Re: Problems with Sensor Pane in Items Palette in Control Panel Editor/PE Editor #controlpaneleditor

Thanks for the replies Phil and Robert. As I said at the beginning of my post I'm building my CPE on top of my loaded LE panel which populates my sensor table and all of my other tables. All other items in the items palate have the appropriate pick lists and icons to drag to the panel except the sensor panel which is totally blank. It seems to me that something in the code is broken so that frame does not load properly when called. I've built CPE panels years ago and never ran into an issue. Anyway I've uploaded a PDF of the screen shots and explanations in problems being worked on folder under "J. Lang CPE sensor table issue" if you our someone else would care to take a? look

Again Thanks,

Seeing the console log would make a big help. It likely has some errors that
will explain some of what's going on. Another is some errors prevent further
things, that might account for the icon issue. Just cut/paste it here so we
can see it.

Locked Move to Raspberry, panel fails #rpi

Hi I have a CTC panel which worked correctly with ubuntu (not sure of the JMRI version as the computer died).??
I set up a Rasberry pi 4? 2gig ram os version 10 (buster) current.? JMRI 4.18 running Digitrax simulation.

JMRI appears to run correctly.? I put a copy of the panel file on the Raspberry, it loaded showing many windows
displaying an error regarding the location of the sound files (this I expected) all other items, icons etc worked.

I then went thru the process of editing all sound locations via the panel editor.? Upon launching the updated panel
no sound location errors were noted, but all the icons (levers, switches, turnout etc) were not present.? If I click
on an icon location it will appear but any functions associated with icon will not work.

In the files to be worked on section there is a folder "ernie" with the session log of both? runs..
log2 is after updating the sound file locations.? log3 is before the update.

The first two error messages appear in both files.? While the after update file has an additional error about half way thru.

Any insight as to what this means and how to correct it is appreciated.
Thanks Ernie

?I downloaded JMRI on my computer using Windows10.? I had a few locations and Trains working.? I was very excited. Then it got hung up and would not run any Trains or keep any new information i added.? We ended up deleting the program. I have re downloaded the program. it will not add operations to the main page. any information i add is lost if i close the program. Im not a computer guy so im very frustrated.

Locked Re: Headlight dimming DZ126T #digitrax

I know this is a JMRI group but....As other posts stated, Digitrax is limited in lighting control compared to other manufacturers.? However, Digitrax decoders technically support simplistic dimming in order to enable Rule 17 lighting effects.? So you can use this as a hack to achieve "always on" dimming.? Essentially wire two function outputs to the same LED and then set them up to support Rule 17 dimming.? Your LED will then be dim in both directions.? Also, resistors should be connected to the 0V or negative wires not the positive blue wire.? You will see in the diagram on the URL pasted below.? Navigate to this page and then search for, "LED with resistor connected to multiple DCC Decoder Functions" to see the example.? BTW, this web site is a great resource for DCC information and services...if you did not already know.

P.S. I verified this with Digitrax support so it is an acceptable "hack"

Locked Re: Confusion resulting from trains in adjacent blocks #automation

The issue about the empty block is which train moved? Three blocks, A, B,
and C. Trains in blocks A and C. When block B becomes active, which train
moved? The ID that is held by A or C? That's the issue.

Now blocks can be built with whichever sorts of sensors you want to use.
While track circuit is following what the prototype used most, and is used
by many layouts, you can do it with optic sensors too. They may take a bit
more work, some optics only give a pulse and logic has to put them together
to know what sections are occupied. I've not used optic sensors for this so
I'm not sure how easy or not it works.

On the issue of blocks between two towns, here are my views, if using ABS
three block rules (clear - caution - stop).
1. If you only have one block, it is easy on the trains to know if anyone is
coming. You'd see a caution that somebody is in the block beyond (you on
track in town one, other train on track in town two). If either moves over
the turnout, the other end would show stop. All of these presume the two
trains are not protected by a turnout set against them.
2. If you put a signal/block boundary at the halfway point between towns
(total three blocks), then you would see clear from either town while
someone is sitting at the other town. If either moved over the turnout, then
the other town would see a caution. Here the issue is you don't know the
difference if that is a train leaving the other town and coming your way or
the other train is just doing a runaround.
3. If you have four blocks, then either train could do run arounds within
that first block past the turnout, and the signal at the other town would
still be clear.

Key here is this is using ABS signals. They are for protection only and do
not grant rights to use the track. Other forms of dispatching would have to
protect the train movements. Options like APB for when you have more than
one block between towns get you closer to making the movements clear but
there are still edge cases that would cloud this. Only using things like CTC
dispatching or double track with direction of travel ABS can you safely move
by looking at the signals only.
