I don't really want a direct connection between my DCC system and "the internet". That would just be 20 or 30 more electronic things in my life where I have to worry about security updates. And that's 30 or 40 things too many.
An "internet-connected device" has an incremental cost for hardware and software development. One cannot use the LNWI as a "price-point", since the LNWI implements a very limited network capability. Do I really want Digitrax engineers spending all their time trying to "virus-harden" their internet-connected device? And do I want to pay an incremental cost of such development? Heck no!
When my DCC system isn't connected to "the internet", I pretty much know that the firmware isn't being (maliciously?) updated.
I think that the "requirement" to buy a Digitrax PR3 _OR_ a RR-CirKits LocoBuffer-USB is a small price to pay for providing a flexible way to apply updates for those who desire to perform said updates. And it is a small price to pay for LocoNet "security".
