Warning: New MacBook Pro M4 Pro & Old Monitor 24
A friend of mine just bought a brand new 14” MacBook Pro M4 Pro 24 GB / 2 TB to replace his very old “black chimney” Mac Pro. Monterey didn’t do it for him anymore. But OK. new MacBook pro arrived and we transferred data and stuff and everything is hunky dory, except his 30” Cinema Display HD (Model A1083) is either black or “patterned”. See image. It does look suspiciously like a bad cable, yes? Or mayle a bad DVI-to-USB-C adapter? Or a bad DVI-to-HDMI adapter, yes? No! We have cross-tested all adapters with my MacBook Pro M2 Max - and they work. We have also tested his new MacBook Pro M4 Pro with my 23” Apple Cinema Display HD (Model A1082) and that works fine too. Apple support has given up … they suggest reinstalling the system (which did not work) or accepting that … and I quote … “the chips in the MacBook Pro M4 and the Cinema Display may not be compatible” … Which I find weird, since it works with my 23” Cinema Display HD monitor … but maybe there’s different electronics in a 23” A 1082 and the 30” A 1083 … who knows Anyways … now you are warned, if you have one of these monitors and you are considerering a new M4 Pro MacBook Pro. Also: Recommendations for a good and affordable replacement for the 30” Cinemad Display are very welcome … :-) Peter -------------------------------- ?? Greenland is not for sale!

Eliminating the System Update Nag 9
Greetings: Does anyone know how to eliminate the Apple System Upgrade Nag without upgrading? None of the extensive searches I've done offers a solution to this problem. If I sweep the nag away, it just comes back after a little while. It's asking me to upgrade to macOS Sequoia. I'm running Sequoia 15.3.2. Screenshot is the upper right corner of my screen. Aside from the annoyance, I'm not fond of Apple insisting what I do with my own machine. Anyone know of a good hack? TIA, Rob

How to Auto-Delete old emails after xx days? 19
Running most recent versions of Sequoia, Apple Mail, and Spamsieve, on a Mac Studio M2 MAX. Looking for a way to automate a rule or smart mailbox to automatically delete some of my bloated histories of emails after xx number of days going back years that are only taking up space. After poking around I can't find any way to automate this. Any ideas? All the best, John

Backing Up 6
I use Time Machine to backup my iMac, I also use BackBlaze. Some files are also copied to Dropbox, but that's mostly so they're available to me if I'm away from my iMac. For as far back as I can remember, I've also backed up important individual files to a flash drive. Nothing is work-related, I'm retired & the files are various personal files. I know it's an extra step to back up to the flash drive but I've done it for so long, it's second nature. I'm wondering if it's really still necessary to continue the flash drive backups or if I can let that step go. Am I overdoing the backup steps? Might be nice to give up that extra step. Thanks very much

LaCie d2 Network 2, defective master card 18
Hello, I have had this NAS disk without a problem for over 15 years. Last week, it died. When I opened the case, I discovered that some components had blown on the LaCie motherboard. LaCie, now Seagate, does not supply spare parts. So, I checked the Hitachi hard drive by connecting it to my Mac mini 2023. The Mac OS cannot read the files because they are formatted in Linux. Is there some software I could install on my Mac mini so I can read and copy the Hitachi drive's content elsewhere? These are Mac OS files on the NAS drive, but LaCie uses a Linux format on the drive. I tried DiskDrill, but it wants to recuperate erased files. I want to recover the actual files on the Hitachi drive. This is my first adventure in the Linux world, and I will need detailed instructions. Thanks for your help. Jean-Luc Brousseau

Heads up on the Latest Updates - Auto Update Changes 5
Heads up on the latest macOS v15.4 and the iOS v18.4 updates! For the first time I am aware, and I had read about this warning last week but did not run my updates until today, simply running these updates forces the setting in your update prefs to "Update iOS or macOS Automatically." See screenshots below. If you don't want your OS systems updated the day or so they are released, and I never do (I generally wait a week or two depending) then you need to _MANUALLY_ drill down in your system prefs for General/Software Updates and toggle this setting not to _automatically update_ if this is your preference. In other words, turn it off. My personal preference is to leave the other automatic settings as seen in the screenshots. Below are screenshots of the before update and after update changes. There may be other additional settings that were changed. If you are aware of any please advise. All the best, John

One for Randy: Failing SSD 8
I have this 2 TB Samsung EVO 870 SSD that is use to make a bootable clone of my internal hard drive before I do system updates - so I can go a step back if anything fails. And today I was going to make a update from 15.3.1 to 15.3.2 So I attach the SSD, open Disk Utility and erase the drive before I start cloning Except - today it wouldn't. It fails. So I tried to erase all containers and volumes one by one. No luck. So I tried to format it as macOS Extended - no luck FAT32 - No luck. Nothing works. And then in the back of my mind, I seem to remember Randy writing about how to revive a failing SSD - and if I remember right, it would implicate using a PC? I can't find the post on this list ... but I'd hate just to throw this SSD in the bin. What to do? Any help out there? :-) Peter

Periodic Scripts 6
In reading the recent emails about periodic scripts (daily.out, etc.) and Mac maintenance, I looked for them on my MBA (Sequoia) and, lo and behold, Apple has removed them. What happened to the periodic scripts on macOS Sequoia? apple.stackexchange.com I got confirmation from the makers of Maintenance & OnyX that this is correct. Those actions have been removed from both apps for the Sequoia versions. Apple doesn’t seem to be saying anything about this, but that’s Apple, I guess. One less thing worry about. Jerry

Reply: [iomug] Periodic Scripts
I was about to ask Jerald what he needed the periodic scripts for, but I think Randy answered that question. By removing the logs, it makes the scripts unneeded. The one time I had a run away log, a restart after removing contrary app was all I needed to fix it. The only stronger repairs that I have needed to do in 20 years has been done by either Disk Utility/ First Aid, or a restart into Safe Mode. If we need a repair tool, I’m sure a new one will come about. I look at this change like when we no longer needed to resolve Extension Conflicts in System 7. Thank you for pointing this out. I have mixed feelings about this. Sequoia no longer runs daily, weekly and monthly "maintenance" scripts. I'm assuming that's because the logs that those scripts used to clean up no longer exist. If they eliminated those logs, they have done away with a valuable tool for figuring out what is going on when your Mac is acting strangely. On the other hand, runaway log files were a not-insignificant problem for a very few users. One that was hard to figure out unless you found someone who recognized the situation. No log files means no more runaway logs. __________________________________________________ Randy B. Apple Mail is very slow 3
Hi, I have an M1 MBP running the latest Sequoia. My ISP is gmail. On many occasions, I have to wait a long time before mail received in gmail is seen in Apple Mail's inbox. I can look at the unread mail via my phone or via gmail.com on a browser. If I switch from viewing the inbox to viewing "junk" and then back to the inbox, sometimes the inbox gets new mail but not always. Also "Get mail" doesn't do the trick. I have tried the mailbox/rebuild command but that didn't help. Any idea? TIA, Paul

Searching for an adapter 10
I have a Digital piano that’s connected to my iPad Pro by an USB to lightning adapter. I was looking for a way to hook up my headphones so I can hear the app on my iPad while playing. There is a jack that goes into the keyboard. But you can’t hear the iPad. Apple doesn’t make or encourage it. I’m trying to see if there’s an adapter where I can put an 3mm jack and USB into a lightning USB-C. I’m trying to spare my neighbors.
