Review of Digipinit.com in the UK
I wanted to do a follow-up of acquiring a version of Excel that works in Catalina. I can not find my thread, but I think possibly one of the members either on MacSupportCentral or IOMUG suggested DigiPinIt (dot) com in the UK as a source for a license for MS Office 2019. They offered a livetime license for it. In other words a purchase, not a subscription. The site was up enough for me to make a purchase, but has had technical difficulties ever since. They have been overwhelmed to respond to support requests, and have had a change of management since February. But they have time to send out marketing emails. They have only auto responded that they are overwhelmed, but otherwise not made any attempt to resolve my problem. My guess is that it is a one man, part-time operation, and less than legit. What they sent be instead of a purchase license for Office 2019 for Mac, was a (subscription) license for Office 365, which will not run on my Mac running Catalina. DO NOT MAKE PURCHASES FROM DIGIPINIT! Randy Singer, please take note. Contact me off line if you want to validate my review, to add to your files. Brent On my Mac mini running 10.15.7

SSD Upgrades for Mac Studio and M4 mac mini
This came up a while ago, and at that time there was no upgrade path for SSD on Mac Studios and M4 mac mini. This article indicates that the Kickstarter project has borne fruit. https://www.macworld.com/article/2546773/the-first-mac-studio-ssd-upgrade-is-here-for-way-less-than-apples-prices.html Roger

Windows changing size in Sequoia
4
Ever since I switched to Sequoia, my windows resize large when I move it certain ways or click on the header. I have to click on the header to get them back to where they were. This is an annoyance. I can't find a setting to disable this unwanted behavior. Anyone solve this? TIA, Paul

System sound enhancer?
4
Greetings: Is anyone aware of an app that functions like a graphic equalizer for their entire Mac OS? I often watch YouTube videos where the sound is muffled or just plain bad. I'm seeking some sort of app that will boost the high end to make the dialogue more understandable. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks, Rob Frankel

Different browsers/different results

I found this of more than passing interest. After reading a long, damning article on how Amazon manipulates their products, I thought I would see what I could learn. Using Safari, I went to Amazon.com, and in their search bar put [mens beard trimmers]. At the top of the results, clearly marked as sponsored, were those items whose manufacturers had paid Amazon to place them at the top of their search results. So far, so good. Oh, when I did a search on that page for sponsored, I got 19 matches. Next, using Brave, I did exactly the same thing. Not one single item was identified as sponsored and when I did a search on that page for sponsored, I got no matches. Finally, Google Chrome produced the same results as Brave: no sponsored items were so marked. I find it disturbing that only Safari correctly identified all those items which paid to be sponsored whereas Brave and Google Chrome do not. An argument for using Safari when you go shopping on Amazon? Can anyone else replicate these findings? Happy Thanksgiving to those of us in the U.S. Bob ===== 偤˾Yw Warenabe ni tojibuta. New Macs On Sale!
41
Wanted to give any United States-based members...interested in a new Apple computer...a head's up on some great Apple Computer deals at Costco. (You can purchase online.) Looks like pretty much everything is well below Apple Store prices. Costco's everyday price on Apple computers is typically lower than the Apple Store (almost always a little bit below Apple MSRP). But this sale is even better. For example...they are offering the newly released base model M4 Mac-Mini (16GB RAM, 256GB storage)...for just $499 + tax. https://www.costco.com/mac-mini-desktop-computer---apple-m4-chip%2c-built-for-apple-intelligence%2c-10-core-cpu%2c-10-core-gpu%2c-16gb-memory%2c-256gb-ssd-storage.product.4000225148.html Current Apple Store price is $599...Costco everyday price is/was $579. But now thru 12/2/24...base model M4 Mac-Mini's are $499. Other Apple Computers on sale: * Base model M2 Mac Studio = $1799 * Base model M2 MacBook Air = $749 * Base model M3 14" MacBook Pro = $1149 * Base model M4 Mac-Mini = $499 Other models are also on sale. Prices good thru 12/2/24. Even if you aren't a Costco member...and you need to purchase a membership ($65)...you will still end up with a lower overall price than purchasing directly from the Apple Store. Even better...if you know someone that's a Costco member...go with them & purchase.:) Also Costco has a 90 day no questions asked return policy on computers. Apple standard return policy is ONLY 14 days. Lastly...if all of this wasn't enough. Costco doubles the manufacture's warranty on computers (and other electronics). Thus a 1 year warranty...is extended to 2 years. I believe 1st year is the Apple warranty...2nd year warranty is thru Costco itself. https://www.costco.com/computers.html __________________________________________________ Randy B. May you be thankful for what you have and those around you. May you have health, safety and prosperity going forward. I believe that my friend in the photo used this for an invitation to an Orphans Holiday Dinner we have both attended for years. You may recognize it as a remake of the album cover to "Alices Restaurant Macacree. Alice passed away on 22 Nov 2024, may she RIP. This is crossed posted across several lists, so you may see it more than once. Brent On my Mac mini running 10.15.7

Ttime Machine vs clone to restore MacBook
6
MacBook Pro, mid 2012, non retina, macOS Mojave 10.14.6 2TB internal SSD (third party, OWC) about 1/3 full. 16 GB ram (third party, OWC) After over a decade of flawless service this MacBook is glitching. Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Spam Sieve, other apps freezing, or throwing error messages. I suspect the battery be slightly swollen, but not a lot. This MacBook has continued to operate with a previous (since replaced a couple of years ago) very swollen battery. Booted into recovery mode and ran Disk Utility. Nothing to fix. Diagnostic mode indicated no problems. Attempted to boot into single user mode (shift key down restart), but boot hangs at the very end of the progress bar with otherwise blank screen. I have been running a Time Machine backup to an external drive on another Mac over the local network. I have also been making clones with SuperDuper! to external ssd drives. Question: If there is macOS software corruption would there be any difference to do a restore from an external Time Machine drive or from an external cloned ssd? Would one type of restore (Time Machine) or another (cloned ssd) be more likely to avoid transferring over the software glitch, if that is what the problem is?

MacMini and RAM
11
Reading an NYT Wirecutter, here was the beginning and end of a long comment made to an article about buying Macs: Began with: Mac user since the 80s here. Ended with: If you get a Mini, get the most memory you can afford at Apples nutty prices. You'll thank me. For the longest time I have been reading posts saying Mac knows how to allocate RAM efficiently, you don't need lots of RAM, but lately I am seeing just the opposite. Is there something about the M chips that is different? I really need some help here because the seniors who turn to me for help in getting new Macs rely on my advice. TIA!

Biome

Hello Brent Maybe this can take you a little further: https://eclecticlight.co/2022/06/27/biome-isnt-about-biometrics-but-suggestions/ On 17 Nov 2024, at 07.00, Brent via groups.io <whodo678@...> wrote: I understand that Peter has found an possible solution to his issue. I am trying to learn more about this Biome thing, but I am having difficulty finding info on it. I understand Peters description of it, I found one article in Apple Discussions, that described either a memory leak or runaway cache, with what seems like behind the scenes software. I get no other relevant hits from a web search. I get no hits from a search on Apple Support. When I search my Library for biome, I get a bunch of hits for long forgotten, unrelated documents, that I have viewed before, but nothing called biome. I may have viewed these documents, but did not save copies of then, or bookmark them. Things that I would normally call detritus. I seldom use Siri, and some of these documents are from possibly before Siri existed. I had wondered that this might be something from Sequoia, until I got the hits on my Mac running Catalina. Can someone explain Biome to me? Brent On my Mac mini running 10.15.7 On Nov 15, 2024, at 10:04 PM, Peter Rasmusen <peter@...> wrote: Hello Brent Biome is a folder in the user Library and it is apparently a part of Apples system for analyzing and personalizing user data, like usage patterns and interactions with the device. The data is used for features like personalized suggestions, app usage tracking, and improvements in system behaviours (Siri and typing predictions and such). I deleted it, and instantly the system created it again. And it seems to have helped, because my backups are runnning now. :-) Peter On 15 Nov 2024, at 23.37, Brent via groups.io <whodo678@...> wrote: Peter what is Biome? Help me unlock my Mac
12
I have written before with my numerous issues after upgrading from Sonoma to Sequoia One of the issues, thatr is still not solved, is Time Machine backups. 2 out of the backups fail with a red info badge saying: Time Machine couldnt complete the backup to Data-2-8TB Time Machine did not finish backing up because some files were unavailable. Backups will resume when your Mac is unlocked. This happens even dyuring the day as I am working on the Mac. Well, ok, I may leave it for 1+0-15 minutes to talk on the phone og make lunch and stuff, and it falls asleep, but that does not seem to cause this and I dont have put hard disk to sleep when possible enabled. So what is it, I need to unlock? I feel i have unluck! :-) Peter

Battery replacement A1707 MacBook Pro 15" 2016-2017
10
Ive replaced a lot of MacBook Pro batteries but this is the first one I've come across that I cant get into the case. The screws are so tiny you can barely see them and non of the tools that came with the battery kit will fit. None of the tools Ive used in the past are small enough for these screws. They say a a P5 pentalobe will work but you can barely see the screws. And the P5 with the kit doesnt fit. Any ideas other than taking it to Apple ? Dutch

New Studio Display Issue
3
Yesterday I bought a new 27-inch Apple Studio monitor to be my second monitor with my Mac Studio, replacing an ancient Cinema Display. My first monitor is also a 27-inch Studio monitor. They were working perfectly. This morning, after a while the mouse stopped being able to move over to the second monitor and I couldn't move windows from the first monitor to the second. A few minutes later I got an update message that there's a software update for the new monitor. I installed the update, but still no use of either monitor as a second monitor. Both monitors are still turned on and displaying the background wallpaper showing on whichever monitor I designate as the second monitor via DIsplays in the Settings box. Any ideas what's going on and what I can do to be able to have the second monitor as expanded real estate? Steve Tiano

UPS run time Calculation
12
I think I've got it right, but just want to confirm before ordering more UPS boxes. QUESTION: How long will the example UPS support the example load? For the example I'm using the following specs for an APC 1500VA UPS box: VoltAmps: 1500 VA Voltage: 120 VAC Load: 6 amps or 720 watts (6 x 120) First I have to calculate AmpHours, which are not stated anywhere in my APC 1500 specs, using the following formula: VA divided by V = AH 1500 VA / 120 VAC = 12.5 AH Next I need to calculate how long the above example load can be supported by this sized UPS using the following formula: AmpHours x Voltage divided by Load (watts) = Runtime (hours) 12.5 VA x 120 VAC / 720 W = 2 (hours) So the answer to my question then is about 2 hours, right? Am I doing my math right? Are my formulas correct? 2 hours sounds about right for this size (1500 VA) UPS with a 6 amp load, but at the same time it's a little disappointing. TIA, John

notes disappearing?
4
Earlier this week I went out of town for a short business trip. I turned on the Mega VPN since I was going to be on airport/hotel wifi. no idea if this was related. but I noticed at some point that all my notes were gone from both my iPhone and iPad. it was a busy trip and when I got home last night I checked on iCloud and all my notes where there. I simply went into settings and saw that the option to sync notes was checked. after I did that (I didn't even toggle the settings) the notes repopulated. so, anyone have a similar thing happen? sort of scary since I have hundreds of notes and keep many things only in there. I used to have confidences since it's synced to iCloud and it sort of was good, but very strange they disappeared on both devices and reappeared when I poked around a bit. Jeff

Turn off trackpad
6
Ipad 2nd generation, 11" and I'm running IOS 18.1 I have the magic keyboard with the trackpad. I have never used the trackpad and I'm finding it's a real pain when I'm typing, filling out forms, etc etc because if I inadvertently touch it even SLIGHTLY, many time it makes whatever I'm working on, on the screen, to disappear or change something. Very frustrating. I went to settings to see if I could turn the darn trackpad OFF. Couldnt find anything. Does anyone know if this can be done and still have use of my Magic Keyboard? Thank you, Marji

Date mystery
3
Hello friends As I wrote a little over a week ago, I updated from Sonoma to Sequoia and one of the strange things was, that Time machine started acting up. But I have also noticed another weird thing: I started the update 21st october late evening around 11. pm to let it work overnight This changed the date of (most of) my folders in e.g. Documents to 21 October 2024 at 23.05 - some a few meinutes before, some a few minutes later. Folders within folders were changed to dates between 21 October 2024 at 23.05 and 21 October 2024 at 23.20. Some to 22 October 2024 at times between 11.19 and 13.18, but the vast majority of folders have 21 October 2024 at 23.05 as their date. The date of files in the folders were not changed. Looking in the folder Applications I notice that everyhing seems to have been installed on 21 October 2024 at 09.49 It is really really weird. And annoying, since I always use sort by date in list mode when i view my folders and files. Has anybody experienced anything similar? Is there a way to make it right? See pictures for clarification:
