Migration - new MacBook

Long story ahead ... be warned.?

A while back I wrote about my old beloved 15" MacBook Pro mid 2015 with 16 GB / 1TB?

For this of you (= all) who don't recall my perils, it it went from nice to evil after upgrading from Mojave to Monterey. Fans running a high speed constantly, kernel task using all the ressources. It was practically useless. ?I did literally everything to troubleshoot the issue including consulting Apple and non-apple experts. The most likely culprit being the kernel extension calls IOPlatformFamilyPlugin.kext which I have earlier had trouble with ... deleting it solved alle the issues. In Monterey it's undeleteable. My file system changed to APFS and it is no longer possible to mess with (= delete) kext files.?

The result can be seen here:?

A minute or so after I start the computer, it's useless ... in the picture above the only user app's that are running is Activity Monitor (and of course iCloud is run-in the background).?

Anyway ... since the APFS volume is a secured volume that cannot be tampered with, I cannot get rid of the kernel extension and - well it may not have helped, but I have tried everything else. So I gave up and now my new computer has arrived: A MacBook Bro 14" M2Max with 32 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD.?

Now I need to migrate

I have most of my user data in iCloud and on external drives. Migrating everything from the old MBP would take a million years (see the image above - not really an abundance of fre ressources - even typing my name would take about 3 minutes). So I can restore from iCloud and from my external drives, but there are things I need, and I have no I idea how ...

Most of all settings ... like the filters in Mail that automatically sorts my incoming mail. ?Is there a settings file ... a plist ... that I can dig out and re-use??

And if so, where does it reside??

I also want all the mail I have stored in On My Mac ... there are a lot of folders with mail I have sorted in categories and projects. How do I get that over to the new computer.?

Everything else ... documents, pictures, music, I can move manually from my backups. And all the IMAP mail will show up again when I set up the accounts ... so it really isn't a lot I need from the terror-machine. But how to go about it .... any suggestions?

With hope,

Peter

Hi Peter -

It’s extremely difficult to migrate piecemeal in the way you describe. I don’t recommend it. Additionally, it might actually work out that the kernel extension that caused you problems on your previous Mac won’t have the same effect on your new Mac.

I recommend doing a standard migration of all your data and hoping for the best.

By the way, the signed system volume is not inherent to APFS but isn’t how Apple has been offering macOS as of Big Sur.

You saw how the kernel_task is taking up alle ressources. Doing a standard migration will only take about 3500 years.?

I know it’s not APFS itself, but the way the new OS’s work after Mojave … with two volumes if which one is locked

Hi Peter,

Not to rub salt in your wounds, as I experienced just this, decades ago, which taught me the value of always maintaining a working restoration process, i.e., backups, clones, bootable external drives, and have thankfully been able to draw from these under your circumstance.

Is it possible you have no backups, or did I miss something?

If you do have backups, what are they, besides your cloud backup, which as you say is less than perfect?

1) Time Machine
2) External clone drive(s)?
3) Other off-site (such as backblaze, etc.) backups?
4) Have you called Apple support yet, surely they would be willing to help, as you just made a recent purchase? Ask for a supervisor when they answer.?

I think what you really need is a recent clone to draw from. ?

I totally get your situation, but for lack of knowing where to start, not knowing what kind of backups you have at your disposal I can't see a path forward. But hopefully there is a way. Can you provide us with the exact number and type of backups you currently have to draw from?

All the best,
John?
