Hi Peter,

Not to rub salt in your wounds, as I experienced just this, decades ago, which taught me the value of always maintaining a working restoration process, i.e., backups, clones, bootable external drives, and have thankfully been able to draw from these under your circumstance.

Is it possible you have no backups, or did I miss something?

If you do have backups, what are they, besides your cloud backup, which as you say is less than perfect?

1) Time Machine
2) External clone drive(s)?
3) Other off-site (such as backblaze, etc.) backups?
4) Have you called Apple support yet, surely they would be willing to help, as you just made a recent purchase? Ask for a supervisor when they answer.?

I think what you really need is a recent clone to draw from. ?

I totally get your situation, but for lack of knowing where to start, not knowing what kind of backups you have at your disposal I can't see a path forward. But hopefully there is a way. Can you provide us with the exact number and type of backups you currently have to draw from?

All the best,
John?
