MP3s?

With my new iMac, I hoped to be able to download and listen to MP3 files. I have downloaded a few but can't seem to figure out how to play them. Any help?
Also, since downloading Napster, everything seems to be very sluggish: the server, connections, software (Eudora, AOL, etc.). Any connection, do you think? --stella |

Here some stupid email questions.
My system is upgraded G3 240 mhz w/ 8.6 On OE v 5.02, i would like to change a few settings. Or move to a different email program. Even upgrade? First of all, my memory allocation is 10mb. However it takes OE about 30 seconds to open a webzine or html mail. I noticed that Netscape Messenger handles the same chore in 5 to 10 sec. When I open up a ezine, i get an automatic connect to the inet. This is very aggravating especially in our school setting. How can I turn this off? All my other memory setting, disk cache etc are default. When I click on new letter/reply etc, I always get a letter size for a 14 in monitor. Thus I always have to drag it open further. Receiving and Replying to egroup messages

I just modified my membership to send individual messages rather than the digest. I had preferred the IOMUG digest before, because it came as just one message and opening the digest gave all the individual messages. I could then select the messages I wished to keep and transfer them to another mailbox. I have found no way to do this with the egroup digests. I use the utility Burst to extract individual messages from other digests, but Burst does not seem to work with an egroup digest. If anyone knows how to extract individual messages from an egroup digest, please let me know.
Thankfully, I find that individual egroup messages still filter into the same mailbox as my previous IOMUG digests... because [iomug] is still in the header of each message....and my previous filter looked for IOMUG in the header. BUT...if I reply to a message it would seem to go only to the sender and not to the whole group. What is the best way of sending a reply to the whole group as well as to the original sender? I assume that to reach the group I should add the address of iomug@.... Does it make any difference if I add this under TO: or if I put the iomug@... address as a Cc: ? Also, I am concerned that others replying to questions may not think to send to the whole group and the rest of us will miss out on the reply. Perhaps this situation is no different that it was before....I'm just thinking about it now. ...Fred |

7200/90 Power PC
Hi,
I'm looking to sell my old 7200/90 (you know, that odd, non-upgradable model). Anyone know of a site that that can give me a ball-park resale value? Or maybe some of you might know. It has 96 MB RAM. I read in a previous post there there was a site that did just this, but did not get the URL. Also, I have 2 iMacs: #1 is a 333/192 running OS 8.6, #2 is a 450/192 running OS 9.0.4. #2 has fire wire and DVD drive, while #1 does not. I would like to upgrade #1 to 9.0.4 (via the CDs that came with #2) but when I last tried the result was multiple crashes in every application, including the finder on start-up. I gave up and did a clean install of 8.6. My question: Does this have anything to do with the DVD or Firewire Extensions that are being installed? I wiped all those out and even ran ConflictCatcher, but to no avail (CC's assessment was that Adobe ATM was the culprit, but CC is another story)...Could this be an Apple software piracy safeguard? Do I have to purchase a new copy of OS 9 to install on #1, rather than using the CD's that came with #2? Even though I personally own both computers (one personal, one for business) am I supposed to maintain separate software for each one--ethically and otherwise? I realize this is a mouthful--thanks in advance for input, Stacey |

What application was it? It is probably an extention which can be found and turned off in the Extensions Mananger control panel. They usually include the word "menu" in the name of the extension, but not always the name of the program at least the way you would search for it. This is my first posting to the list. A program I recently installed placed a drop down window on the very top menu bar (the one in line with the colored apple). I have trashed the program, used find to discover any other files for the program and trashed them. I still can't get its drop down window off the menu bar.
This is probably something very basic (and outlined in every manual known to mankind) but I still can't figure it out. Help, please. Virginia |

My Computer is a Macintosh Beige G3 minitower, circa 1998, with 266Mhz, 128MB and OS 8.1 I went to the website of my favorite radio talk show host and decided I wanted to try listening to the show online. A message from the website told me, that inorder to listen online, I needed to download MS Media player 6.3 for Mac (yuk), which I did. When I tried to use it, it told me I needed a newer version of Quicktime (I had version 2.1). I went to the Quicktime download site and downloaded the newest version ... 4.1.2. The Quicktime Readme seems to be saying I can do almost anything with sound but fly to the moon. Now, I'm wondering if I really need MS Media player 6.3 and is it possible I could use Quicktime 4.1.2 to listen to the talkshow, instead? Media players and I are complete strangers except for opening those sent-to-me sound and music files with SoundApp and MPEG players like Real Audio which no longer seems to be free. All enlightenment is welcome....:-) I hope I'm in the right pew...:-)... I tried sending to IOMUG at the "old" location and got an "unauthorized" rejection slip. So I'm assuming the moving truck has arrived early at the new destination, known as "e" in my nickname file. I'd heard the move wouldn't be complete till January 1st. Yolanda == |

The specific answer to your question depends on what mail client you have. I use Entourage. I subscribe to a number of lists, some digest, some individual messages. With all of them, I have filters or rules set up to route the incoming messages to a folder set aside for that mailing list. To me, that answers your desire to have the individual messages in a separate "mailbox" or folder. You don't need the digest at all, if you route the incoming mail to its own folder to begin with. In Entourage, the mailing list manager can automatically burst incoming digest messages. That's another option; receive the digest, route it to a folder, and automatically burst it. I wrote a script for Entourage that will burst a digest on request if you don't do it automatically on receipt. The ads from Egroups are an annoyance to many. I run a couple of other
groups on Egroups, so I've been over this ground. If the group sponsor is willing to pay a fee to Egroups, something like $5 to $10 per month, they will eliminate the ads. If it is enough of an annoyance to us members, perhaps Mark could ask for people to volunteer to send $1 a month to him, and he could pay Egroups to leave the ads out. In my groups, nobody thought it was worth money to get rid of the ads, so we live with them. For users of Outlook Express or Entourage, I can give you an AppleScript that will strip out those ads. I'm on a 68k mac, using the 68k version (latest) of iCab's browser. It's really nice but.... * Any file that is downloaded as a jpeg or other pic file type is sent as an application which, when clicked upon, generates the old -192 (PPC app on a 68k) dialog... WHY? Is there no 68k code in their fat binary to handle this type of download? my only work-around, so far, is to run Navigator (boooo!!! ). please, any ideas? TIA All the best, BrianS |

For the last seven days I've been on Sprint.ca for my internet connection. The helpful folks there gave me smtp.sprint.ca for the smtp (outgoing) mail address. Every letter I have sent was returned to me as 'undeliverable', four days after having been sent. This morning, after being told by Sprint ("we don't support macintosh with technical service"), that it was "probably a TCP/IP problem" on MY end, I went back and switched the smtp address to "mail.sprint.ca" and all is well. Whaddya know? I sent letters to a lot of people, so , NO, I haven't turned rude, or disappeared, and i apologize for the rants I may have sent to my LISTSERV digest people regarding "why aren't you remailing my posts?" Now I know. Sorry for the rants, inconveniences, and, invisibility. It's rather awful to be on an amazing machine (which the Mac is) in a world of PC "techs" whose orthodox reply is "download another Windoze98" or whatever, what a pathetic bunch... All the Best. I use a program called "Digest Viewer". I save the entire message in a folder called, very cleverly, "Digests". I subscribe to 2 other groups that are digest form. In "Digest Viewer", go to browse folder and the the messages appear individually. It also groups the messages (all those RE: the same subject are together). I think I found it at download.com.
