Re: FW: Reading egroup messages

Allen Watson

The ads from Egroups are an annoyance to many. I run a couple of other
groups on Egroups, so I've been over this ground. If the group sponsor is
willing to pay a fee to Egroups, something like $5 to $10 per month, they
will eliminate the ads. If it is enough of an annoyance to us members,
perhaps Mark could ask for people to volunteer to send $1 a month to him,
and he could pay Egroups to leave the ads out.

In my groups, nobody thought it was worth money to get rid of the ads, so we
live with them. For users of Outlook Express or Entourage, I can give you an
AppleScript that will strip out those ads. See my web page (URL below).

If you use Entourage and have
been wishing for some little enhancement, odds are someone has already
scripted it! For instance, I just finished a powerful script to locate
duplicate contacts in your Address Book called "Duplicates Report".
Wow! Does anyone know of any scripts available (free or otherwise) that will do this in Eudora Pro? (Paid version, 4.3.3) I know I'm probably dreaming...

I just joined the IOMUG list a month ago and am enjoying it immensely--thanks everyone!

I've recently seen some references to "Entourage" a combo e-mail client and
PIM from Microsoft. I have three questions:
1. Is it any good?
Entourage user here. It is like Outlook Express on steroids. It is faster,
smoother, with many key features that were missing. Its spell checking
integration with Office is more complete than before. It uses the
AutoCorrect feature now. Just like in Word, an underlined word can be
corrected with the use of a contextual menu.

Then, you have the PIM (Personal Information Management) features, meaning a
To Do list, notes, a calendar, and an improved address book (on steroids
too).

It works with the dictionary that ships with Office 2001, meaning that you
can define words as you write or read e-mail.

It links calendar events, e-mail messages, tasks in the To Do list and notes
together.

2. Is it free
No. As Dale said, it is part of Microsoft Office 2001.

3. If the answers to 1 & 2 are "yes" then where can I get it?
This small company called Microsoft.

iCab Questions

BrianS

Hello, I'll try to be brief...

I'm on a 68k mac, using the 68k version (latest) of iCab's browser. It's really nice but....

* Any file that is downloaded as a jpeg or other pic file type is sent as an
application which, when clicked upon, generates the old -192 (PPC app
on a 68k) dialog... WHY? Is there no 68k code in their fat binary to
handle this type of download?

my only work-around, so far, is to run Navigator (boooo!!! ). please, any ideas? TIA

All the best,
BrianS

Hello,

For the last seven days I've been on Sprint.ca for my internet connection. The helpful folks there gave me smtp.sprint.ca for the smtp (outgoing) mail address. Every letter I have sent was returned to me as 'undeliverable', four days after having been sent.

This morning, after being told by Sprint ("we don't support macintosh with technical service"), that it was "probably a TCP/IP problem" on MY end, I went back and switched the smtp address to "mail.sprint.ca" and all is well. Whaddya know?

I sent letters to a lot of people, so , NO, I haven't turned rude, or disappeared, and i apologize for the rants I may have sent to my LISTSERV digest people regarding "why aren't you remailing my posts?" Now I know. Sorry for the rants, inconveniences, and, invisibility.

It's rather awful to be on an amazing machine (which the Mac is) in a world of PC "techs" whose orthodox reply is "download another Windoze98" or whatever, what a pathetic bunch...

All the Best.

I use a program called "Digest Viewer". I save the entire message in a folder called, very cleverly, "Digests". I subscribe to 2 other groups that are digest form. In "Digest Viewer", go to browse folder and the the messages appear individually. It also groups the messages (all those RE: the same subject are together). I think I found it at download.com.

How can I separate the egroup digest into separate messages? And..
NO, I do not want to receive individual messages as they just clutter
up a mailbox.

With other digests I use the utility Burst to extract the individual
messages, but I have not been able to use it successfully with the
new egroup digest.

The value to me in having separate messages is that I can select the
ones that I want to save, and then transfer them to another mailbox.

Hello Members,

My first posting to "e-groups" after years of posting to IOMUG...
I have a question regarding the font selection for egroup messages.
Can I choose them on the web site? or am I stuck with this trashy
little font.

It appears to ignore my settings on my machine. Eudora prefs are
blown off. Am I really going to have to turn off accepting HTMl
formated messages?

I really do not have time for this. So list gurus do your thing and
illuminate me.

Greetings, I guess this would be a question for Mark Luffman, I don't know.
I received the e-mail saying how the digest was moving to egroups & I have been receiving it. In that email I was given the web site & a password. I was able to access the web site OK. However, when I tried to sign in, I kept getting that I was using the wrong password. I tried several times to make sure it wasn't due to a typo, but it wouldn't accept the password I had been given. What do I do now? Thanks. Zentura

Greetings, I, too, am looking for a resume template. However, I have AppleWorks 6. Is there one hiding in there somewhere? If not, are there any suggestions or does anyone know of any freeware?
Also, I have been trying to learn how to create links, so when I'm sending someone an e-mail & I want to refer them to a web site they can just click on it. I have been told to just type in the web site & I've also been told to put Chevrons around the web site. ie: <> I have tried both ways but can't get it to work. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks. Zentura

I am not sure why you ar having your problem, but when I have made pdfs I
would use a post script print driver and print to file. Then using distiller
I would make a pdf of the .ps file. I have acrobat 3 on my mac and this
seems to work perfectly.

I have Acrobat 4 on my pc and I have been able to print to file on a mac and
copy it over to my pc to make a pdf with 4 and never had a problem.

Is there a modifier key (or keys) that would prevent the copying, and

Not per se. You need to use something besides the Finder. An AppleScript
would probably suffice; something that works with contextual menus might be
the best. You would select a file, Control-Click it, and then pick the
option from the popup menu; it might be called "Just Move," for instance.
The script would then need to let you navigate to the folder you want to
move the file to. The great shareware application, FinderPop, already has
such an action built in along with dozens of others. Try finding it on

I think this info, saved from an old message, is what you are looking for:

If you replace the "IE 5 Control Library" file in the "Active X Controls"
folder inside the "Extensions" folder inside the System folder with a
SimpleText document of the same name, it will never use IE to render complex
HTML messages inline. Instead, it will just use the built in rendering,
which can't do thinks like images, tables or remote content. There are no
security issues with the built in rendering.

Window Shade

A week or two ago, someone wrote to the list mourning the fact that since OS 9, we had lost the ability to roll up a window by double-clicking on its title bar. Someone else replied that you can still use the right-hand button on the title bar to collapse the window. I was in a rush at the time, but this has bothered me, so now I am writing to correct this person's impression. The ability to do WindowShade with a double-click is not lost, but you have to go set it. Go to your Appearance control panel and choose the Options tab. There, you can set it to "Double Click title bar to collapse windows."

Digital Cameras

Paul M. Hellings

A few weeks back I asked the IOMUG list for their collective opinion on
Digital cameras. After much research, I decided to buy a Kodak DC 290. It
features a 16mb card a 3X optical zoom and 2 megapixel resolution. I paid
$529 for it complete with rechargeable batteries, charger and AC adapter.

After using it for a week or so, I just wanted to tell the group that it
takes INCREDIBLE photos and the included software is excellent. Connected
via USB cable, the camera "mounts" just like a hard drive. Photos can be
dragged to your HD easily and quickly. It comes bundled with Photodeluxe 2.0
and Pagemill 3.0

I've been printing the output with an Epson 880 printer which has been very
rewarding in terms of quality and speed. the printer is almost silent!

To round out my Christmas purchases, I bought an additional 128mb of RAM for
my bronze Powerbook....for $89 from MacZone.

To anyone considering Digital, this camera is a very good choice in my
opinion.
