Need iPhone Clock App 20
All - Ok this is NOT a Mac specific question, is there a group that I should go to? I used to use a marvelous app on my iPhone by Emerald Sequoia LLC - "Clock". It gave very accurate time to the tenths of a second. I used it in tracking satellites. But then I got a new iPhone and when I was loading my apps saw that they had shut down and the app was no longer available!! Wah!! Is there a good app that gives very accurate time to better than the second? Thank you! -- Charles Phillips Houston, Texas Some C and C++ coding, orbital mechanics analysis, amateur astronomer tracking satellites.

Safari "Tracker blocking" 2
Several updates ago, I noticed Safari "Tracker blocking" statistics. I thought it was interesting and would check it every time I launched. I noticed it was always between some number between 80 - 100. A recent Safari update increased the statistics had doubled…but that statistic is now twice what that 80-100 range it used to be. Is it really valid? 2021 M1 iMac Sequoia 15.4.1 Safari 18.4

Apple Calendar 5
I have two calendars under my iCloud account … Work and Private Work is a light blue and Private is a pale red . And even though two is not a lot, but even so it can be rather cluttered. There are so mange Work related entries, that I am seeking a way to be able to mark the entries in some way - preferaby with a color. Like bright red for “important", green for “maybe" and yellow for "only if time permits”. A friend of mine uses Google Calendar and he can color each entry individually. I assumed I could do the same, but I can’t find a way to do it in Apple Calendar (and I am NOT switching to Google). Is it possible to do, what I want? Are there “extensions" to Apple Calendar that would let me do it? Other workarounds? All input welcome :-) Peter

New upgrade 3
Time to get new laptop. At Bestbye today, I liked the 16” 1 tb model. This could be my last computer but I don’t have a lot of time to research. The costs may be considerably higher in a month or two according to the salesman. I had to leave my current 2017 laptop with Geek squad for 3days to check for malware after being almost scammed today. Any opinions on the 16 inch one I am considering. My geek squad cost and warranty will be available as long as I buy new equipment there. Thanks! Ellen Sent from my iphone max pro 15

quick off-topic question 18
Sorry for the off-topic intrusion, but… Can anyone recommend an ISP other than Comcast or ATT? I’ve reached the end of my tether with both. Thanx, Kurt Youngmann *** "I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.” - unattributed

Can't send mail in 15.4.1 on Intel MBP 7
We can’t send mail with Mail.app after upgrading to 15.4.1 on our Intel MacBook Pro. Worked fine with 15.4. Receive mail OK. We send mail from mac.com (iCloud) and from several accounts on cox.net, which is actually smtp.mail.yahoo.com. After clicking “Send” the icon is greyed out, but nothing happens. I can open the Drafts folder on our M2 MacBook Air running 15.4 and send any mail there; in fact, I wrote this on our MBP and sent it on the MBA. Connection Doctor shows Mail is connecting to all servers. We run SpamSieve so I booted to Safe Boot but no change. Booted to Recovery Mode and ran First Aid in Disk Utility and received these warnings: … warning: orphan omap mapping found for old 16637723 warning: volumeomap (fs_oid 0xf724e9): 2 orpan mappings found … … was found to be corrupt and needs to be repired … Performing deferred repairs … Operation successful. These warnings appear no matter how many times First Aid is run. Don’t know if we had these warnings in 15.4, but suspect that we did. Anyway, Apple seems to ignore them, as you can see. Re-installed the OS from Recovery Mode, but no change. Have a bootable clone made just before installing 15.4.1, but it would contain the orphan mappings. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Carroll

iPhone yes, MacBook Pro, no 4
Greetings: Does anyone else have this issue? All my mail accounts are hosted at GoDaddy, which uses Microsoft Exchange. All the accounts have been Authenticated whenever asked. Yet there are times when e-mail shows up on my iPhone but not on the MacBook Pro. Same settings. Same authentications. Same everything. I deliberately don't delete e-mails on one device to confirm their arrival -- or absence -- on the other. It's not just a delivery or time delay, either. Both devices are usually in the same room, on the same router. Am I missing something here? I was under the impression that the whole point of IMAP was to sync all your devices in real time. Thanks, Rob

stylus for MacBook trackpad or Apple Magic Trackpad? 2
Is anyone using a stylus with a MacBook trackpad or the Apple Magic Trackpad? Which stylus are you using? How does it work for you? If no one is using one, is anyone aware of a stylus that will work?

FREE MACINTOSH SOFTWARE 2
Hi everyone! When I decided to put my database of the very best free software for the Macintosh on a Web site for everyone, I had no idea that I'd be filling an unfilled niche and that the site would be so popular. There are other Web sites that list free software for the Mac, but few of them vet the software for usability and desirability. I also had no idea that there was SO MUCH really good free software for the Macintosh! I've just drastically updated the page, and it's now up to 237 listings of really nice free software for the Mac! FREE MACINTOSH SOFTWARE http://www.macattorney.com/free.html Among the latest additions are very advanced graphics programs, programs that use AI to do things that were very hard/expensive to do previously (such as speech recognition/transcription), genealogy programs, and a number of nice utility programs. If you haven't gone through all of the listings recently, it's worth looking through them again. There are sure to be free apps that you will find that will prove to be invaluable. The page is entirely non-commercial, I don't make a cent from it. I want to point out that I'm not an expert Web developer...far from it. I'm just an enthusiast. So the site looks a bit amateurish. But hopefully it is still very useful and interesting. I also acknowledge that the site doesn't yet support HTTPS. I'm getting to it. (If this turns you off, please just ignore the page, rather than harassing me about it.) Please spread the word about the Web site to others! Welcome New Members of IOMUG! 3
A warm welcome to our new IOMUG members! Please feel free to introduce yourself, say hello, and tell us about your history using the Macintosh computer. For our older members, we have a number of new members this week who are coming from a much less friendly Mac discussion list. IOMUG has a history of welcoming members from other lists who were looking for a Mac discussion list that was more friendly. The folks here on IOMUG are all really nice. No question is too basic. Feel free to ask anything. __________________________________________________ Randy B. Reading "Deleted" Lines In Word 3
All - I have two versions of a Word file, started from one version and duplicated it. I started the file a couple of years ago and did have "Changes" turned on and exchanged versions with a colleague. Now I have edited both versions and Changes are turned off. Now I want to send a version to two different colleagues but have them NOT able to see changes that I made to earlier versions. There is nothin nefarious going on, I just want them to concentrate on their parts of a project! When I do "Get Info" you can see that the file was started a couple of years ago - that is no problem. Is there a way that people can retrieve deleted lines from Word files? I looked at some sites and people there asked the question and the answers just seemed to talk about if you had hidden backups (maybe on Onedrive) but I am only sending a copy of the most recent versions. Thank you. -- Charles Phillips Houston, Texas Some C and C++ coding, orbital mechanics analysis, amateur astronomer tracking satellites.

iPhone 16. Are some services optional? 7
We have a couple of old iPhones. I am going to get one iPhone 16e (probably). My question is; are face recognition & artificial "intelligence" optional? Can they be turned off? Please, let us not get into a long back and forth about why or why not one should use these services. Let us first hear from some people who might know the answer to the my actual question. Steve PS. Sorry but, I am finally that cranky old man ...

Warning: New MacBook Pro M4 Pro & Old Monitor 24
A friend of mine just bought a brand new 14” MacBook Pro M4 Pro 24 GB / 2 TB to replace his very old “black chimney” Mac Pro. Monterey didn’t do it for him anymore. But OK. new MacBook pro arrived and we transferred data and stuff and everything is hunky dory, except his 30” Cinema Display HD (Model A1083) is either black or “patterned”. See image. It does look suspiciously like a bad cable, yes? Or mayle a bad DVI-to-USB-C adapter? Or a bad DVI-to-HDMI adapter, yes? No! We have cross-tested all adapters with my MacBook Pro M2 Max - and they work. We have also tested his new MacBook Pro M4 Pro with my 23” Apple Cinema Display HD (Model A1082) and that works fine too. Apple support has given up … they suggest reinstalling the system (which did not work) or accepting that … and I quote … “the chips in the MacBook Pro M4 and the Cinema Display may not be compatible” … Which I find weird, since it works with my 23” Cinema Display HD monitor … but maybe there’s different electronics in a 23” A 1082 and the 30” A 1083 … who knows Anyways … now you are warned, if you have one of these monitors and you are considerering a new M4 Pro MacBook Pro. Also: Recommendations for a good and affordable replacement for the 30” Cinemad Display are very welcome … :-) Peter -------------------------------- ?? Greenland is not for sale!

Eliminating the System Update Nag 9
Greetings: Does anyone know how to eliminate the Apple System Upgrade Nag without upgrading? None of the extensive searches I've done offers a solution to this problem. If I sweep the nag away, it just comes back after a little while. It's asking me to upgrade to macOS Sequoia. I'm running Sequoia 15.3.2. Screenshot is the upper right corner of my screen. Aside from the annoyance, I'm not fond of Apple insisting what I do with my own machine. Anyone know of a good hack? TIA, Rob

How to Auto-Delete old emails after xx days? 19
Running most recent versions of Sequoia, Apple Mail, and Spamsieve, on a Mac Studio M2 MAX. Looking for a way to automate a rule or smart mailbox to automatically delete some of my bloated histories of emails after xx number of days going back years that are only taking up space. After poking around I can't find any way to automate this. Any ideas? All the best, John

Backing Up 6
I use Time Machine to backup my iMac, I also use BackBlaze. Some files are also copied to Dropbox, but that's mostly so they're available to me if I'm away from my iMac. For as far back as I can remember, I've also backed up important individual files to a flash drive. Nothing is work-related, I'm retired & the files are various personal files. I know it's an extra step to back up to the flash drive but I've done it for so long, it's second nature. I'm wondering if it's really still necessary to continue the flash drive backups or if I can let that step go. Am I overdoing the backup steps? Might be nice to give up that extra step. Thanks very much

LaCie d2 Network 2, defective master card 18
Hello, I have had this NAS disk without a problem for over 15 years. Last week, it died. When I opened the case, I discovered that some components had blown on the LaCie motherboard. LaCie, now Seagate, does not supply spare parts. So, I checked the Hitachi hard drive by connecting it to my Mac mini 2023. The Mac OS cannot read the files because they are formatted in Linux. Is there some software I could install on my Mac mini so I can read and copy the Hitachi drive's content elsewhere? These are Mac OS files on the NAS drive, but LaCie uses a Linux format on the drive. I tried DiskDrill, but it wants to recuperate erased files. I want to recover the actual files on the Hitachi drive. This is my first adventure in the Linux world, and I will need detailed instructions. Thanks for your help. Jean-Luc Brousseau
