Re: CW filter passband width

Yes.? Any of the filters can be modified from their defaults down to 50Hz.? You might also change the shape to Soft to minimize ringing.

Scott N7SS?

Re: CW filter passband width

Go to M-1 then hold "FIL" to get to the filter selector.
Each time you press "FIL" you will cycle through the 3 CW filters.
Hold F-1 "BW" and turn the great big knob on the right to adjust it up or down.

Re: No audio, no transmit after programming IC-7000

Did you try it before the update and did it work then?
It may be totally unrelated to the update.
Is is possible that pure age sitting in the closet and boredom caused a problem is a central part of the radio that keeps it from working.
I can't see programming with RT systems causing the problem.
Did or does)? the RT system program read the radio programming?

No audio, no transmit after programming IC-7000

My IC-7000 had been sitting a while and has a history of very light use. One night I pulled it out and decided to update the local repeaters. After programming the IC-7000 with R T Systems software, I hear no audio and the radio does not appear to transmit, no red line on the display. I then tried a full reset, and still no audio on all bands and no transmit on all bands. Any ideas on how to correct the problem?

Hi Darrell, USB is used for all data modes on HF as far as I know, but you would have to select USB manually. I haven't used CAT control on mine so I don't know if Winlink or any other software will set the radio to USB through CAT control. I like using the 6 PIN DIN version because I can use it on any radio with the 6 PIN DIN. I like using my Digirig because I can use it on any radio I have including Icom HT's

I tried using the Accessory port with my Signalink but it would never key up the radio. When I switched to the 6 Pin DIN plug it worked fine. I haven't tried my Digirig on the IC-7000, but the 6 Pin DIN plug cable & Digirig seem to work with every radio I have that has the corresponding port.

When you use VARA FM WIDE don't forget to switch the radio's data speed to 9600. I sometimes forget it, but even VARA Narrow is still pretty quick.

I'm thinking it would be proper to use the DATA jack just because of that.

Taking VARA FM WIDE out of the mix (would require using the 9600 bps output on the DATA jack), for VARA HF/FM, fldigi (PSK, RTTY, Olivia) or perhaps a voice keyer, is there any other reason to prefer one over the other (Accessory vs DATA AF OUT)?

What has been your experience?

Well technically the Signalink won't do any baud. ? I have used mine on VARA FM WIDE and have achieved 25210 bps in both sending and receiving Winlink emails.

Re: To DATA jack or Accessory jack, that is the question.

I always used the 6 pin mini jack. I don't remember what they called it.
If you use this jack I think that the front mike is automatically muted in digital transmission.
Your mileage may vary.

Steve,

?

Thanks for info via drop box. I haven’t been successful in getting the earphone output to the app on my Lenovo laptop. All my readings are crudely acoustically coupled from the speaker via the onboard computer microphone. The shape of your hiss waveform looks similar to mine. I took some screen shots which I will forward to your personal email, since we can’t send attachments to this forum. I provided a background noise trace and the hiss on 435 MHz, RF gain at 1 o’clock, AF gain at noon, pre-amp ON. But until I can get a line in to the Easy RTA, making any amplitude comparison between our measurements will be hard.

Kurt,

I doubt that the audio amp is the problem.? If you plug your headphones into the front display, is the noise level similar on EasyRTA?

Here's a link to the document that shows my measurements.? The dB scale will be much different probably than yours.? This was with the RF Gain level set at about the 1 o'clock position and volume at 12 o'clock.? Once the RF Gain is past 12 o'clock it doesn't change anything.? It's already at max gain there.

I recently downgraded from Dropbox Pro to Basic, so you probably can only view the file.? I would need your email address to allow downloading it I think.

Thanks all for your responses, more info:

?

Noise across modes AM>USB> RTTY>CW

?

Noise across bands about the same except 435Mhz which is clearly noisier

?

EasyRTA (cool, thanks Steve) Noise waveform bell shaped with peak around 1250 hz

?? (So Steve was right a 6Khz cutoff wouldn’t help; this is in the middle of the human voice spectrum)

?

From normal listening baseline noise goes from -70db to -10db at full volume (ouch!)

?

Maybe the audio amp is just getting old along with me J

Kurt,
No, the problem is not primarily frequencies above 5KHz, but possibly an overal increase in all audio frequencies that pass through the selected BP filter (200-4000 Hz).? But I haven't heard your noise, so perhaps I'm wrong.? 6 KHz is a pretty high pitch.? If you have a scope to look at the level shift that would give you some idea.? Or better, if you have a computer with a Line level audio input (some mic inputs will auto switch to line, but many won't.? Check the manual) then you can download the free EasyRTA software that I used and see the frequency and amplitue.? It won't be as accurate as the Focusrite interface I use, but fine for this purpose.??

One easy check I thought might be worthwhile is measuring the AGC voltage that varies the IF stages gain.? But it maxes out at 4.6 VDC for signals below -60 dBm, which is well above having no coax connected, so not likely to lend any insight in your case!? And in case anyone every needs to troubleshoot AGC problems, the AGC voltage at the 3 IF stages should be about 3.4 VDC at -50 dBm, 2.5 VDC at -20 dBm and 2.1 at 0 dBm.? FYI S9 = -73 dBM, S9+60 = -13 dBm with pre-amp OFF.? The easist place to measure AGC is near Q702 on the top of the MAIN.? Put the probe tip in the open via hole on the trace that connects R713 and?C711 together.? Use the existing soldered bare wire connecting two nearby IF coil shields cans as ground.

I don't know what test equipment you have, but any further troubleshooting takes more than a DVM and scope probably.? If your increased "hiss" is actually a higher frequency squeal, then that might be easier to look into.

Steve, W3AHL
