Re: Spare parts

I've seen several forums conducted by Heil and he advocates not grounding for RF purposes, not lightning. They are two separate discussions.? Lightning grounding is imperative...where grounding your equipment with the desired effects of solving various problems related to unwanted RF situations is what he is referring to when he advocates not grounding.?

Just wondering if there are any other ic7000 users in Belize?? I just relocated to Placencia (permanently I hope) and am just getting set up as V31TK (KF5WBG).

Re: RES: RES: [IC-7000] Spare parts

" I read somewhere that Bob Heil has an extensive and totally ungrounded station, and never has a problem with lightning or RF."

And he will be SK Bob Heil if lightning strikes that Antenna while he's using the Radio.? Not to mention how many other people in his house may get hurt as it runs from the rig down the mains ground to his appliances.

Nothing is a certainty unless you spend really big $$ on a professionally installed grounding system but for a few hundred dollars you can swing the odds in your favor.

Having an ungrounded radio system doesn't necessarily mean having no lightning protection. ?I'm sure that Bob Heil's receivers are just as sensitive to a 200+ kilovolt, 20,000 amp discharge nearby as anyone else's. ?I notice that the "Heil Ham Radio Handbook" has a whole chapter on "Proper Grounding & RFI". ?I haven't read it, but it doesn't say "ungrounding".... ??

Hi all,

a coaxial line EM discharger is not enough when a lightning arrive on your antenna. I had a 8 meters long vertical antenna on the top of the roof. It simply exploded, I found several parts of a coil meters and meters far away from the home.
I always disconnect all antennas from my radios. But that time it arrived on my antennas and damaged:
- the vertical antenna
- one power supply
- IC 7k and antenna tuner
- Kenwood TM702
- one computer
- adsl router
- voip gateway
- tv antenna amplifier
- water heater control board
- satellite tv feeder
- some parts of the roof.

So I bet that nothing can protect a radio in this condition. The electrical discharge found a privileged path throut the grounding wire of the power supply. I noted, in fact, the most of the damages are on components close to metal parts connected to ground.
In the IC 7k, some components on the RF board vaporized and on the lower metal panel there a huge sign of this explosion - I couls say the evidence of the electrical discharge.
So probably all of you are right, and I simply have to think if to look for spare parts or not.
Thank you again.
