Re: [IC-7000] IC-7000 and it's VHF/UHF

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThis is analogous to the fact that a vehicle with an optimistic odometer can lead one to think it's getting better MPG's than it really is. That doesn't mean it gets from point a to point b any more economically than a like vehicle with an accurate odometer. I say the observations by Steve, W3AHL, in his email?earlier this AM,?are far more real world than what a low resolution and possibly inaccurate meter might have one believing.Happy Holidays, Dennis KD7CAC On Dec 25, 2013, at 12:51 PM, Mark Krotz <mkrotz@...> wrote:

There we go - that should at least give him a general reference point to see if some button pushing screwdriver wizard was in the service menu.

I really have not noticed a lack of sensitivity on VHF or UHF. Most repeaters are way the fook out there to begin with in my area and I have mostly used SSB on VHF and FM UHF for my repeater. ( I could run it at RF power level 0 into a dummy load and still be full quieting ) VHF SSB sensitivity is good, then again, I have nothing to compare it to. I tend to leave my FM comms to some old Motorola Radius M120s and GM300's - the big M ALWAYS has designed nice receivers with awesome sensitivity.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýExactly. I've had 599 QSOs on phone where there was no s-meter reading -- just a quiet band and steady conditions.? The only way to judge them is on the bench, with calibrated equipment.? ?? ? ? ? This message was delivered by flying monkeys! On Dec 25, 2013, at 13:51, Mark Krotz <mkrotz@...> wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMany conceptions that the 7000 has "poor sensitivity" is because the S-meter is calibrated more realistically, compared to may other radios on the market, who's S-meters give extremely liberal S-meter readings. You can't base your perceptions of how well the radio receives solely on the S-meter readings. Mark On 12/25/2013 12:47 PM, linyc@... wrote:

Re: IC-7000 and it's VHF/UHF
Steve..., You can check out the links below and see how it is a known issue that the radio has poor sensitivity on 2m/440 http://www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php?topic=63406.0;wap2 http://forums.qrz.com/archive/index.php/t-312382.html You can also do a search on Google about it. It's not a dramatic difference from other radio's, but it is big enough to notice. Try to find a very weak signal on simplex, then switch to another 2m/440 rig. You will then see the big difference. It's the difference between hearing and understanding a very weak station, to hearing nothing on the IC-7000. Compare the radio in real life terms. One will not see the big difference on local repeaters. N2GYN John |

You beat me to saying that. There is no one size fits all default settings for the service menu settings. Its all adjusted per radio. It is, however, quite easy to "calibrate" the radio using mostly ham-ly equipment. A service monitor would be best, but you can get away with out it by being creative.... mostly using an old HT into a dummy load as a signal generator, an amp meter, a watt meter, a frequency counter, a 100W+ dummy load etc etc.
Download a copy of the service manual, it has the step by step process in there with specific how to details.? If you know what the specific problem that is being funky with your radio, you may not have to do the WHOLE alignment, just align the section where you think the problem is and see how it plays. OR, if you are a perfectionist like me, I would go along and align the whole thing to the operating voltage of my shack. The 7Ks are a little weak on HF RF output even at 13.8VDC. It seems 14.8VDC - a fairly common charging voltage in some import vehicles, makes the 7K happy and is within the operating voltage tolerance.?
I did use the service menus to bump up the HF mic audio since my Hiel Goldline was very quiet going into the mic port. That was before I learned about using the -line in- pin of the 13-pin acc jack.

Re: [IC-7000] Power Bar reading.
Are you referring to the amplified click of the PTT switch in the hand mic when compression is enabled? ?In the Files area see ?7K PTT Spike with Compression.doc for RF envelope showing the problem, posted Jan, 2012. There is also a spike due to ALC attack time in certain cases. Neither relate to how much voltage and current are required to achieve rated TX power output. Steve, W3AHL |
Re: IC-7000 and it's VHF/UHF
I just don't see the problem here. ?I have an FT-8800 and access to several TM-V71A's to compare to my two 7K's. ?There are several repeaters that are marginal coverage for my area. ?Doing an A/B test among the 4 rigs has the two 7K's neck-in-neck with the TM-V71A, with the FT-8800 clearly in second place. ?The TM-V71A has slightly better quieting on some repeaters perhaps, but the signals are so weak it's hard to judge reliably by ear. I don't doubt what you say. ? Can you give any more details on what and how you are comparing? ? If you hear a dramatic difference, I would suggest you find someone with an analyzer and check out the sensitivity at 12 dB SINAD. ? Maybe there's a problem with your radio. Steve, W3AHL |
Re: IC-7000 and it's VHF/UHF
This is all good information Steve. However...., the fact remains. The VHF/UHF on the IC-7000 is NOT as good as most 2m/440 mobile rigs. This fact eats at my very core! That's why I brought it up again from the last post in April. Using the SAME antenna for testing their is a noticeable difference. You are NOT addressing a newbe Ham here. I may not possess the technical knowledge you have, but I know what I know. The IC-7000 is disappointing on 2m/440. Bottomline!! Have a very nice Holiday. 73 John |
