If you have the default setup, the knob behind the volume is the squelch in FM and RF gain for other modes

I don't know where you are, but mine has a 1 year warranty from Icom, and an added 2 year warranty from the merchant. Should allow me to "burn it in" in that time! Many shops allow you a certain time to return the merchandise, then it is between you and the manufacturer.

Please ignore. I have trouble shooted and eventually resolved the issue. I have however noticed the Icom runs hot with a burning smell after a couple of hours of use. Do any of you use external fans. Also when buying new should anything go wrong do Icom have a warranty scheme. I'm guessing by law they have to. I know the shop I purchased from only offer 28 days.

Re: Finals idle current adjustment - does it sounds like my 2m finals are blown?

Just to clarify: ?The FET on the small board is the driver (Q504). ?The pre-drivers are Q101, Q102.?The first adjustment in section 4-4 sets the Driver idle bias. ?The remaining steps adjust the PA idle bias.

I would check the bias voltage (ID3V) at R501 and at the gate of Q501 (VHF PA) to see if it varies when you adjust it. ?If it does not, then there may be a problem with the bias circuit. ?Otherwise, Q501 may be defective.

I haven't seen your symptom. ?The two Q501's that I've replaced both had low output, but that's a small sample.

Finals idle current adjustment - does it sounds like my 2m finals are blown?

garymortonuk

I was operating the IC7000 on my desk when it emitted smoke. I quickly turned off and opened up to investigate. I confirmed that the pre-driver board was blackened, which according to web searches appears to be a common failure mode with this rig.

I ordered a new transistor from a UK supplier at a cost of UKP15. Removing the pre-driver PCB wasn't particularly difficult and after some effort and help from a friend was able to remove the old surface mount transistor from its tiny PCB and replace it with the new one (but I would recommend to anyone else to buy a new complete pre-driver board assembly!). Surprisingly there was no sign of thermal grease having been applied between the transistor and the heatsink/case, so I added this for the new transistor. It all went back together OK.

I followed the instructions for setting (what I believe to be) the pre-driver idle current for each frequency band - there are four settings: HF/50-1; HF50-2; 144M; and 430M. The HF/50 and 430M settings adjusted OK, but worryingly the current on the 144M setting didn't change from the base value.

My question is - does this point to the finals transistor having blown?

The strange thing is that operating the rig in FM mode on 144MHz it does put out 40W of power, which would surprise me if the finals transistor was toast. In USB mode when viewing the power meter the needle doesn't move much except on loud sylables. It sort of makes me think that the bias is missing as if the transistor is operating in class C. Perhaps its just wishful thinking that the final transistor is OK.

Has anyone seen similar behaviour?

regards...

A flickering green light -- especially combined with intermittent noise from the loudspeaker -- means that the signal on FM (if there _is_ a signal) is strong enough to open the squelch _sometimes_.

Suggested cure:

. . . Raise the setting of the RF Gain/SQL knob for FM, or:

. . . Use a menu setting to change it to an RF Gain knob _in all modes_.

I'm using a R/S 10-w amplified-speaker. Works rather well, but don't know if they're still available. It's mounted on the top-of-the-dash 'dish', which I cut holes into to allow the audio & DC connections to pass through.

Re: [IC-7000] Mobile speaker

As a?retired Motorola Communications guy, I can very highly recommend the newer plastic housed mobile radio speakers, or the older TSN-6000 heavy metal Motrac era speakers for really solid and satisfying sound in a fixed or mobile ham installation.? They are designed for voice range, are rugged, reliable, and attractive.? Best of all, mebbe, is their easy availability at hamfests for peanuts.
?
In my past IC-706MKllG mobile installation, I installed an NSN6027 12watt amplifier / speaker from the Convertacom? unit and it worked like gangbusters.? There was adequate, undistorted audio for every condition.? However, I was somewhat annoyed by the everpresent, albeit low level, alternator whine out of it, easily remedied, but I never got to it.? When I installed my IC 7000, I chose a current style plastic housed speaker, as above, with satisfaction, but the front installation was a bit cluttered in my Mazda.? I then dug out an old Motrac speaker and installed it on the rear window panel between the seats, facing forward.? To my?increased pleasure, the more throaty sound from the Motrac speaker evidently bounces off the front windshield, absolutely filling the cockpit with great CW and voice.
?
I hope that this one man's comments help you find the right speaker for your needs.

Hi Helen
yes i know i have these issues too add to that when operating long overs are not possible due to these problems.
they are amateur radio sets not designed to be used due to the duty cycle issues.
some have used large fans to keep things cooler.
this problem is getting worse climate control with in a car does help to keep things cooler or a shaded area.
the case of this radio is also a heatsink so it absorbs heat as well as dissipating it.
that does not help the electronics with in it.which get warm to work.
to a point then when the temperature is exceeded it all shuts down.
so we have to devise ways of keeping them cool.? put in larger boxes and blown with fans is just one suggestion which makes the idea of a small enclosure which it comes in a bit of a joke to be honest.

I sure I am not the only one with this prob? ? ? ??

I have had a number of issues with computer programming of rigs, the IC-7000 being one of them. Usually the handshaking problem was related to using the wrong com port, if you are using a USB to Serial adapter. I found a program that checks your adapter to determine which com port it likes.

The link to the program itself is located near the bottom of the article which is very helpful as well.

Do you only have the problem when the radio is hot? ?My oldest 7K is only used mobile now and it exceeds 40 C here often in the summer and I have no problems. ?My SUV isn't garaged, so it gets HOT inside, but I haven't measured it. ?I usually don't turn on my 7K until the car has had a few minutes to cool down.

I did some thermal analysis in 2011, although below 40 C. ?During TX when the internal fan turns on, there should not be a problem even with CW key down for 10 minutes continuous at 100 watt output. ?I can send you the info if you wish, if you really feel you have a thermal problem.

The radio is only specified to operate at a maximum of 60 C., which true even of expensive Motorola commercial radios. ?I suspect that the 7K might have to be operated at reduced duty cycles at 60 C, however....
