¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe filters are not the crystal or mechanical filters we are used to in
most earlier radios but defined in software by the DSP system. This allows the
control of the pass band and shape of the filter by the operator. There will be
some leakage due to the limitations of the DSP to completely block out of pass
band signals as there is with the older style discrete filters. The sound of the
filters will be a bit different too due to the way the DSP works.
The sharp edges will have a slightly different sound to the rounded edges
and will also react differently to noise and type of signal. This really up to
yhr operator to decide which sounds best in the condition to them. I have
difficulty deciding which is best as to my ears. The shape does not alter the
bleed through much as the bleed through is determined more by the skirts and how
deep they go down before the digital system can not block the out of band
noise.
As DSP systems improve, then we can look forward to better performance but
nothings perfect and the IC7000 is one of the earlier affordable radios using
this filter system.

I have to concur with this¡ but after having read a number of Yaesu and older Kenwood manual¡¯s the Icom manual is very well done and straight forward. ?The Nifty Manual though is nice because it is compact and I can take it with me and leave the nice big manual at home if I take the 7k in the field. If a guy is 40 over 9 just a few KC up/dn the band from the edge of your filter, you'll likely know it. Every filter has a "quality" number, both in ultimate rejection, and in shape factor (how steep the skirts are). But, given normal signals, you should not hear anything outside the filter edges. It is a brilliant buy, condensing the official ICOM manual into a series of simple steps to set up or adjust specific transceiver facilities. In contests, or when operating a DXpedition with my 7000, I will often narrow it down to 200 Hz or so, to be able to pull out a single signal from the pileup. On other radios (e.g., my IC-7600) I will also engage the Audio Passband Filters (a second set of filters in the audio chain, beyond the regular filters in the IF) to really clean things up. If you are operating totally "in the clear," i.e., no nearby signals and good signal strength, you can open the filter up to 1 KHz or so and it will have a more "natural" sound, to most people's ears. Hi the signals you hear are not morse or CW which is set in carrier on carrier off but in afsk cw is usually sent in FSK which is carrier on carrier off. Yes there is a book Ham Radio For Dummies. You can order it from Amazon. It is a very general and basic book but probably not a good book to learn about the basic features of your ICOM 7000. I found that the preamble to the chapters in the ARRL Handbook much more informative about what things do and how they operate. Of course the ICOM 7000 manual is a great source of information but assumes you know something about ?what things are. I think between the two you should be fine. For how to be a ham operator the ARRL books excel there too.
