Re: [IC-7000] Strange issues with output power

The finals are either working or they are not - 0% or 100 % A big culprit is usually either the power supply - it MUST supply a minimum of 13.8 volts even under load or else it drops power. Or else the fuse holders need cleaning - there might be a voltage drop on them. The IC-7000 is EXTREMELY sensitive to voltage - more than any other radio I have seen. It needs 13.8 - 14.8 volts or else it is not happy. Even the two IC-7000's in my mobiles will not put out full power until the motor is running and the alternator kicks in at 14.4 volts (they will typically give me 60 watts with just the battery) 73 John On 20 Dec 2012, at 7:42 PM, George <george.smart1@...> wrote:

Strange issues with output power

I have used my MP-1 with both the IC-7000 and my FT-817 with great success as a portable. I have used it a few times on a trailer hitch on my car and it worked well on higher frequencies. I have never tried it below 20M as a mobile antenna. Jack Spitznagel, KD4IZ On Dec 19, 2012, at 16:11, "py2etc" <py2etc@...> wrote:

IC-7000 with MP1 SuperStick Portable Antenna
Hi,
I'm interested in this portable antenna (MP1 SuperStick Portable Vertical) to use when on trip. Anybody have this antenna using with IC-7000 ? Could give me an opinion ? Other option is ATX-Walkabout, but this one is just for QRP operation and MP1 accept 100W without problems. Thanks. Edson Tandello Cruz - PY2-ETC - Brazil |
Re: IC700 and THP HL550FX
The ALC cable would have its center pin connected to ACC-6 (blue) and shield to ACC-2 (red).

The STBY cable whould have its center pin connnected to ACC-3 (orange) and shield to ACC-2 (red which is ground) [NOT to gray which is 13.8 VDC]. The HL550FX manual and spec sheet does not speciify the current draw of its T/R relay. But they do mention they are minature high speed Panasonic relays, which are all under 100 ma. (>40 ma. typical), well under the 7K's spec of 200 ma. Steve, W3AHL --- In ic7000@..., Richard Wiklund <richard@...> wrote:

I'd like to use my THP 550 watt amp with my Icom 7000. The diagram on page 21 of the Icom 7000 manual is not very clear. The amp has the ALC and STBY inputs, as shown in the diagram. And I have the13 wire cable supplied with the IC7000. Connecting the blue wire to the ALC is clear. The THP manual says, ""Connect the control cable from the ACC terminal (or SEND, TX GND etc.) of the transceiver. The center pin is to be shorted to ground through the relay circuit of the transceiver." Does the IC7000 have an internal relay? Do I connect the orange HSEND cable to the center pin of an RCA cable and the gray to the shield? Appreciate any help. Dick, K1MGH

If you're using the IC-718 mic input, you should have the IC-7000 MIC GAIN turned way down -- maybe 10, out of 100. If you're using the IC-7000 microphone input, you woould get better results using either the "DATA" jack (6-pin mini-DIN) or the "MOD" input on the 13-pin DIN jack. They both take signals in the 500 millivolt range, which most soundcards can comfortably deliver. ALC -- _any_ ALC -- usually means that PSK31 signals are being slightly distorted. It's fine for RTTY, though. Sorry if this repeats previous responses -- . . . Charles VA7CPC --- In ic7000@..., "kf5rgb" wrote:
Found the answer to my problem this weekend by fooling around and adjusting the output attentuation level in DM780 to its highest setting. Had a play with a 7100 last week and would not be so quick to write it off. It was a very well thought out radio. Love my IC7000 and had similar feelings as Dave AD7DB. I think just wait till you have a play and make your mind up. The operating system is similar to the 9100 series. Unfortunately the unit would not TX so did not get a chance of a contact.

All of my vehicles are heavily modified for off-road use as well. Using a touch screen on rough roads or off-road would surely be an issue. I also find most Touch Screens to be finicky ... and a small touch screen is probably not the very safe to use in a moving vehicle. I think the lack of a color screen will only make it even more difficult to decipher the data at a glance. I have my rig setup with the radio in the rear of my Land Cruiser mounted to a toolbox where it gets very good ventilation. The control head is mounted on a Ram Mount System that is bolted to the floor and it is positioned very well for use while mobile. I find this very easy to use while driving. The external Icom SP-22 speaker is mounted facing me and it provides very good audio. Looking at the photos, the ergonomics of the 7100 control head just do not seem to work for mobile use. It also seems to be a bit large for mounting in a vehicle in a way that does not interfere or crowd your space. I am very happy with my 7000 and plan to purchase two (2) more for my other vehicles. I want the identical setup in each vehicle so in an emergency, anyone in the household can use any truck, any time without a learning curve. --- In ic7000@..., "The Simpsons" <grant@...> wrote:

The ergonomics of the 7100 are all wrong for me as a mobile user.

My IC7000 control head is mounted face up on the centre console just behind the gear lever. I have a remote 4" monitor on top of the dash for the display. This way I can keep my eyes on the road and operate the controls by feel. My arm rests on the centre arm rest and so makes controlling the radio very easy. The angled display would not allow me to do this. Also, the touch screen would be very difficult to use without looking at it so not happy about the safety issues doing that. I use my mobile a lot on rough roads (or off road) so having to reach for the controls on a dash mounted control head would be difficult and touch screens almost impossible to use without stopping first. I need the separate head but with a separate (from the controls) screen. I will be keeping my IC7000. Maybe a 7100 with a flat non touch display and a remote display option instead of the angled set up should be considered by Icom. It wouldn't have to be a colour screen though that does help with all the information available on the IC7000 screen. Grant, ZL2BK. -----Original Message-----

More stable that way. Although there are a lot of D-Star systems around here I am still undecided on whether it's worth the extra cost; for me the VHF/UHF on this radio would be for SSB, satellites, JT65 etc rather than FM repeaters (which I already have other radios for). I'm told receiver sensitivity may be better on the new radio though. The 7000 didn't replace the 706 series right away. But there were some pretty good close outs on new 706's when they finally stopped making them. Give a couple years after the new radio is out and they may do the same with the 7000. Dave AD7DB 2a. I'm using that tuner since the beginning and I can only say good thing about them (because I've two). One for my IC-7000 and another one for my IC-7200 which is my 100W backup system placed into a Pelican suitcase.
