Re: [IC-7000] Auto tune help

Richard H. Eckhouse

Norm,

I'll let you know after I talk to the tech at MFJ. He's out on vacation
until the end of next week. But I think it is a timing problem since the
TUNER light comes on but the tuner is not activated except when I transmit
say in FM mode.

happens. If I hold the button for 2 seconds or more that doesn't

there doesn't appear to be any output. However, on SSB if I talk into
the microphone the auto-tune features starts to work but takes a while
to get a good SWR because the power output varies with my voice. On
the other hand switching to CW or FM and keying the rig (CW) or the

Dick, W1HIL
I have a similar problem with an MFJ-993 tuner. It worked as advertised
with a 706. Wouldn't tune when I went to a 706IIG, and doesn't work
with the current 7000 - same tuner, same cables. Works fine if I press
the tune button on the tuner. Went back and re-tried the 706, and it
still works correctly, but not the IIG or the 7000.

This is pure conjecture, but I think it's a timing problem - the 706IIG
and the 7000 don't hold the key line low quite long enough to start the
MFJ tune sequence. For now, I use the tuner 'tune' button. Some day
I'll get ambitious and put a 'scope on the key line and see what is
really happening.

Thanks, I did call MFJ but their tech is on vacation until the end of next
week. I think you are correct, however, since I can see the TUNER icon but
the tuner itself is not activated. I guess I will just have to wait it out.

I don't think that is the problem since the tuner is powered from the
IC-7000. Actually I have tried it both ways (wall wart and from the rig)
and that doesn't seem to matter. I have the MFJ cable so it should work
but
for some reason it only tunes when I press the PTT and start to transmit
not
from the TUNE button being pushed.

Thanks, I have the MFJ cable for the tuner so the power is supplied from the
7K. I also enabled PTT and that works okay but I didn't want to have to use
that feature to get it to tune up. I also went to remove the JP4 jumper per
the MFJ instruction but it wasn't there. A call to MFJ was friendly but the
tech I needed to talk to was on vacation.

Re: RS-BA1 Setup for Remote VoIP usage and Transmit Problem (Bug?)

You have to use an interface to get recieved and transmit audio into and out of the radio. Easiest way is to use a sound card interface like you use to work PSK. I use a signal link and it works fine.Find the set-up manual on the icom JP site is is very informative

Re: ALC question

VE3FMC

You do not adjust the ALC. If you have your mic gain adjusted properly the ALC should never go into the red section on the readout. If it is going there then you have too much mic gain.
I can run the SSB power down from 100 watts to 5 watts and the ALC reading never changes.

But if I run the mic gain up it changes the ALC, and my audio drives it into the red, which is too high. I never come close to driving the ALC reading up past that orange line underneath the bar graph which reads the ALC. On my highest voice peak the ALC reading just barely hits the end of the orange line below the bar graph.

I¡¯ve seen this problem more than once. Some relay from the harmonic filter
is stuck. In your case probably one for 10 meter band.

Note that is the band it work better, 90 W. Because of it the other bands RF
are forced to go through wrong coils and cap?s.

73 good luck

Subject: [IC-7000] Strange issues with output power

Hi All.

I have had an Icom IC-7000 for over a year now, having bought it second
hand. Today I went to use the for a few SSB QSOs on 20 metres when I
realised I couldn't get more than 40 watts out.

Initially I thought that the PA amp may be at fault, but after playing
around some more, I learned that the power I get varies wildly with band.
Setting the radio to 100% power out, I get the following measured powers
with a Bird Thruline into a dummy load:

- 160 metres, 1 watt.
- 80 metres, 1 watt.
- 40 meters, 10 watts.
- 20 metres, 40 watts.
- 12 metres, 60 watts.
- 10 metres, 90 watts.
- 6 metres, 30 watts.
- 2 metres, 49 watts (fine).
- 70 cms, 37 watts (fine).

It seems the issues are in the HF PA, i.e. anything on Antenna 1. I'm not
sure what the issue is. I think something like a capacitor gone down, or a
relay stuck? I'm not sure.

Any help would be greatly received.

Thanks in advance.

Can someone tell me how to set the "transmit out timer" on the 7000. Have
looked in the manual and no luck.

Tks for the help.

In my previous message I shoult have referenced No. 33346 where my issue is documented. Sorry Tom

Well, my friend checked everything and it all was set correctly. He ended up calling Icom and after a discussion with them it was decided that the only thing left to do was to do a RESET of the rig. So, he did that and it is now all working again. I guess the theory is that something just glitched and caused the audio on VHF/UHF to not work. It would be nice to know more about what happened but it seems to be one of those little mysteries we all face at times.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. It was well appreciated.

Hello again chaps :)

I've done some further investigation and I'm a little stumped as to what the next step should be.

I firstly checked all of the LPF filter relays with a multimeter with the radio powered off, and confirmed that they were all in the normally-closed position, as would be expected with no power to the rig.

I then measured the receive sensitivity and it seems fine, i.e. the standard (50uV = S9 for HF). I checked on all the bands, and it is the same sensitivity for them all (2m/70cm excluded, of course).

If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

Best 73, and seasons greetings.
