Re: [IC-7000] RE: ALC Meter

Alex Netherton

Turn on your swr meter and watch that. Wet can make a wire antenna go all woogy, plus, wind can stretch them. The transmitter might have gotten hot too. You need to watch power out, swr, alc, and muf all at the same time, along with final temp.

You have the 8V regulator, then R2011 and C501//C502 ...

So you can find suitable replacement on eBay with words like :

That's way too much SWR. Fix the antenna too.

ALC Meter

I was contesting today and toward the end of the day my ALC meter would only go half way to where it usually goes which is to the edge of the line. It then would go to the edge again, drop again etc. I am getting 5/9's even when the meter is at 1/2 usual. Any thoughts on what is going on? We are having a weather day here in NY and I am wondering if something might be going on with the dipole? What is the meter trying to tell me? Thanks for any advice...

With an SWR of 3:1 or greater ... I can see why the 7K is acting funky. RF is getting into the radio. Ground the radio with a flat braid or flat copper strap and fix the antenna. The 7K is not going to be happy with that SWR, it will be folding back RF power as well as heating up the unit.

Re: [IC-7000] 80m problem

Sounds like an R.F. feedback issue, more than likely into the power supply or microphone cable.

Try and substitute a known good 50 OHM dummy load in temporary place of your antenna system, and I would bet your "issue" goes away

I don't know what HS stands for, but I assume the resistor was discolored due to overheating.

I wouldn't recommend using the DIP leaded caps, as you will probably end up ruining the circuit board traces. ?Remove the existing caps from the circuit to see if that clears the short, or if there are other problems. ?It is OK to power up the radio without the C501 & C502 caps for testing, since they only decouple noise on the 5VDC power bus. ?But the display circuits may be a little "glitchy" until good caps are installed.

?

Then order the correct parts and install them. ?

What HS means?
I've read over the net cases where this resistor remains intact.
I'll begin with the capacitors.
?
I guess I have some 100uF tantalum DIP capacitors around.

Not available right now, because I'm away from?from home.
The radio is 3 years old, but it was stored in its original package?since I brought it from Lisbon-PT.
No more than 2 hours of use.

I have a 7k with the?“click-click no power” problem.
?
I’ve found a good start about it here:
Tested for the C501 and C502 in the main panel board and I can say one of them is really shorted.
?
Does anybody have or had this problem in the past, and was able to solve it?
?
I’ll try to fix it myself, but I have some doubts about how to remove the main board.
Can someone give me some tips on how to remove it, especially concerning to the flat cables?
?
I have no Icom Maintenance around, so I’ll have to put my on hands into the game, so, any additional information will be welcomed.
?
Thanks, in advance.

Re: (Almost) Dead IC-7000

To clarify, C501 & C502 are on the Display board, not the Main board. ?Getting to the display board isn't too difficult. ?Just don't lose the little button that sits on top of the Headphone/Speaker switch. ?Also, pay attention to how the slide latch and springs are placed.

The connectors for the ribbon cables have a pressure release tab (light brown if I remember correctly) that you have to gently lift up about 2mm on each end of the connector, to release the ribbon cable. ?It must be raised up still to reinsert the cable later. ?The same applies to the Main board cables.

Take pictures of how the grounding springs are mounted on the main board, so you can reinstall them correctly.

If you haven't soldered surface mount parts before, this is not a good board to learn on! ?Find another ham or electronics repair facility to unsolder the old parts and resolder the new ones. ?All of these circuit boards are very sensitive to static electricity (ESD), so they should only be worked in a static-safe area (ground wrist strap, grounded static safe mat, ground static safe soldering iron, etc.).

These capacitors are readily available 100uf 12VDC tantalum SMD's. ?I don't remember the package size and it's not in the service manual, but if you decide to proceed, I can supply that info, along with a couple of manufacturer's part #'s. ?These parts are polarized, so it is important that the + and - sides are installed the same way as the part you remove. ?There is usually a dot or bar on one end that you must match to the original part.

There are several parts that can cause this problem or fail as a result of the caps shorting, but the repair article you referenced had good advice. ?But you need the service manual also. ?
