Hello everyone. I can't seem to find out how to change the auto power off setting. I know it's in there somewhere because it's set for 1 hour.
I feel a "doh" moment coming on when someone tells me where it is in the manual.

I have to concur with this¡ but after having read a number of Yaesu and older Kenwood manual¡¯s the Icom manual is very well done and straight forward. ?The Nifty Manual though is nice because it is compact and I can take it with me and leave the nice big manual at home if I take the 7k in the field.

Hi John

Soon after purchasing my IC7000 I was advised to buy one of N6FN's
"The Nifty mini manual".

It is a brilliant buy, condensing the official ICOM manual into a
series of simple steps to set up or adjust specific transceiver
facilities.

After 4 yrs I still find myself using it when my brain refuses to
remember how to do something.

Re: [IC-7000] CW Mode

Thanks Gary¡ yes, I knew about the 250 +- the frequency, but it doesn¡¯t hurt to be reminded of it.

Okay, so let¡¯s talk about shape of the filter since you bring it up. ?Am I to assume that if it has a soft (or rounded edge) it will allow some to bleed through on the edges, but a sharp edge will be very binary in what it lets through?

Theoretically. Truth is, it depends on how good the filter is. If a
guy is 40 over 9 just a few KC up/dn the band from the edge of your
filter, you'll likely know it. Every filter has a "quality" number,
both in ultimate rejection, and in shape factor (how steep the skirts
are). But, given normal signals, you should not hear anything outside
the filter edges. BTW, a 500Hz filter does not mean it will pass plus
and minus 500Hz. It means it will pass 250Hz each side of the center of
the 500Hz.

Not quite. It shouldn't sound garbled, you just won't hear it, unless
there it filter leakage. It shouldn't be garbled unless you are using
NR. Another can of worms. :o)

johnvn_1969Okay, it appears that filter 2 is selected (500 Hz) as noted
below? What do
most people run this as?

John V. Nelson ? KD8TZC
For everyday operation, I generally run 400 Hz. It provides good
selectivity without sounding too harsh. In contests, or when operating a
DXpedition with my 7000, I will often narrow it down to 200 Hz or so, to
be able to pull out a single signal from the pileup. On other radios
(e.g., my IC-7600) I will also engage the Audio Passband Filters (a
second set of filters in the audio chain, beyond the regular filters in
the IF) to really clean things up.

If you are operating totally "in the clear," i.e., no nearby signals and
good signal strength, you can open the filter up to 1 KHz or so and it
will have a more "natural" sound, to most people's ears.

Hi the signals you hear are not morse or CW which is set in carrier on carrier off but in afsk cw is usually sent in FSK which is carrier on carrier off. AFSK uses a applied tone oscillator.
so that is why it is received as a LSB or USB signal.

Re: icom 7000 book for dummies

Yes there is a book Ham Radio For Dummies. You can order it from Amazon. It is a very general and basic book but probably not a good book to learn about the basic features of your ICOM 7000. I found that the preamble to the chapters in the ARRL Handbook much more informative about what things do and how they operate. Of course the ICOM 7000 manual is a great source of information but assumes you know something about ?what things are. I think between the two you should be fine. For how to be a ham operator the ARRL books excel there too. Hope this helps.

I've still got the itch for a 7410 so I'm willing to part with my 7000.

Late Serial number new in Jan 2012
very little use, never run mobile
No Mods - Radio has never been opened
HM-151 Microphone with AB5N upgrade
Separation kit - never opened
Non-Smoking never exposed to smoke
All boxes, manuals and paperwork
Laminated Quick Reference sheet for IC-7000
Will take $1000, USPS Money Order or Paypal OK with fee
Will trade up to IC-7410

I'd like to meet around Middle Tennessee if possible, no problem to ship.

Check the filter bandwidth settings (both high and low) and also IF shift in case they have been set to some unusual values. Could easily cause the muffled sound you have.
