C3 bangs ,hums and creaks

Hello folks. This is my first contact with you all and almost
certainly not the last..I have a circa 1963 C3 which I picked up for
?100 with a 910 Leslie 2 years ago.Yes I know how lucky I am..
I now use a 145 via a home made converter box and deeply
love the sound, even if it is taking me a while to get used to the
different character of the new Leslie and consequently a whole
new set of drawbar settings.
These are my current organ issues:
1) after ,say,30 minutes of use, dependent entirely upon
percussion and vibrato control settings,I get a banging noise
which is consistent in speed and disappears with a final pop if I
switch vibrato on for one or other manual.Does this Imply that I
need to re-cap the line box or worse?
2)The volume pedal works but I can't fade to silence .Should I
be able to do this and what ,if anything, can I do to make it work
properly?
3)I've chopped her very neatly but feel that the upper part should
be made stronger. Are there any conventions that I should follow
to really do a good job?
4)We are shortly to go on the road for real (hooray) and at this
stage I must use my own gear and initially maintain it myself
until we actually make some money .What should I do NOW to
hopefully ensure that she starts out fit for the life rather than
being an embarrassing disaster waiting to happen (she sat
,unused and covered in nicotine scum in a Birmingham working
mens' club for easily 15 years).
5)In ? or $ terms, how much should I expect to have to spend to
get her certifiably fit for another 40 years of very active service
considering that she may actually be shagged out in spite of
sounding great to me and my band? What should you always do
or have done to any C3 with an obvious history of neglect?
6)Blood red or deep yellow? I'm not sure...

Re: Digital Hammond XB-2 Owners Manual

Hi Steve,

The XB2 is an incredibly usefull tool, you will enjoy it for sure.
Some of the most prolific bands of the past decade have used an XB2.
Do you run it through a Leslie or use the on board simulator?

Which software version do you own? You will need to know when you
order the manuals which are different for both models.

If its a version two it will say so on the screen when you start the
XB2 up. If its not, then you should definately upgrade it (see
) for details. you can put an
order for a manual there too if you wanted to.

These are quite regularly advertised on eBay.? I just enter the search word Hammond organ and enjoy monitoring the results.? You get a sense of what organs sell for (or don't sell for) as well.

B3 has.

I personally have no idea what the above means.
?
A B3 has drawbars across the length of the 61 key manuals.
An M3 only has 2 sets of dbs to the left of it's 40-some key manuals.??Sound like your box?? You have 44 playing keys per manual?? White rocker switches for vib/ch and percussion to the left of manuals??? Square end (piano looking rather than synth looking) keys?? That'd be?an M3.
?
In regards to what it's worth....? Does the organ function?? Is it working?? The neat thing about Hammonds is the market pretty much determines the value.? Sounds redundant I realize.? But like Ebay, you wanna know what people will play for it - put it out there and you'll see exactly what someone will pay for it.? Or put it in the paper and if noone wants it you either have junk or it's priced too high.? As far as a general reference, I personally will recommend $100-$300.

have either a personal or your own company site (Hammond related of
course!) that you could list there?

Also, if you are a player...make use of the calender too, you never
know you might get a load of Hammondzone listers along to check you

Hello all. Just joined the hammond_zone. I have a Hammond XTP-50 which I
thoroughly enjoy. I've never met anyone else who had one or even heard of
it. Wouldn't mind hearing from anyone who has (or has had) an XTP-50. My
name is James Skinner and located near Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA.

I'll tell ya. Things are different across the country (world). Value of
Hammond organs is largely based on model, condition, location, location.
An $8000 B3/122 in NC is a $11000 organ in CA and a $2500 in WA. But
generally speaking all organs are old. Most are so-so and need some
attention. If it is in great shape or already been serviced and isn't
so-so it will cost an arm and a leg.

Are you the guy from folkswaggin?? If so I've enjoyed
some of your stuff I've heard.
Yes. Thanks. I enjoy playing for sure.

He was sick as a dog but we managed to get him
better before the weekend where he had some big gig in
Greensboro or some place.
Hmm. Wonder who he was. Interesting.

Anyhow, as far as the organs go if it looks like I
could get a "steal" I might be interested in talking
to the guy. Otherwise too much moving (that old
Hammond bugaboo).
Well it is all you. Basically I see the equation as this. If you want
one now you pay more. If you are in no hurry and can wait as long as it
takes then you can be more picky and wait for the right one. I suggest
meeting everyone who has to do with organs. Talk to the local backline
rental agencies and players. Be the little brother to the Hammond freaks
and you'll find one. There is always a chance at a steal. But more
likely you will pay a reasonable amount for whatever. Hammonds are
expensive. Face it. You will not find a B3 for really cheap. It wont
happen. I know some who do but they are very connected. If you want
cheap buy a spinet. M3 is a great organ. It is limited by being a
spinet. You can't do some things on it but its a real Hammond. Good
luck.

I work at Boone Drug now across from the hospital
here, if you get a chance stop in or give me a call.
Right on. Thanks Bob,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like a couple of so-so
organs. I have the Hammond bug bad but am relatively
new at it. I have enjoyed the learning process, both
musical and technical.

There is a guy up here who has a pawn/music shop and
he has what appears to be a pristine B3. I'm sure he
knows what it's worth and I believe he is a player as
well.

Are you the guy from folkswaggin?? If so I've enjoyed
some of your stuff I've heard.

I met a guy a couple of years ago, he was in the
hospital up here (I'm a Respiratory Therapist) and we
got to talking Hammond and he was a real Hammond
freak. He was sick as a dog but we managed to get him
better before the weekend where he had some big gig in
Greensboro or some place.

Anyhow, as far as the organs go if it looks like I
could get a "steal" I might be interested in talking

Cool - Boone. Nice place. I'll be up your way in 2
weeks.

These organs are owned by a club owner/attorney
named Lee Cecil in High
Point, NC. He is a pretty nice guy. Kind of an
impulsive freak. Got
into Harley's - bought 3. Got into bagpipes. Got
into Dobros so he
bought a National as old as dirt - like serial
number 0016 or something.
Anyway I played at his club with my B3/122 and he
had to have an organ.
I told him I have found *the source* for stuff in NC
and would be happy
to help. I have been playing, scrounging, placing
feelers and courting
Hammond folks and freaks for a long time. In my own
efforts to find
really knowledgeable people who I could learn from,
buy from and talk to
- I have found some great people. I pride myself on
being the little
brother to what I feel are the coolest elder Hammond
freaks in NC. So I
was talking with Lee and I said - I am going skiing
for a week, I know
you want an organ I suggest to buy from these 2
people - give me a week
and I'll find a good organ for you. That statement
has a lot of merit
too. Hammonds are old. Most are not in Good shape.
If you don't know
what to look for you may not notice that several
things may be wrong, so
I feel it is important to have a relationship with
the folks you're
buying from. This cat Lee was getting into Ebay
browsing. I told him
whatever you do, while I'm gone skiing, don't buy
from Johnnie in
Centrailia. An aside - I bought an organ from him
via Ebay - when Ebay
was brand new and to say the least it was a learning
experience. I got
shafted. Johnnie may not mean to be a snake but
when he states an organ
is in good condition I feel that he does not qualify
to make judgements
of that nature. Just doesn't know enough. So
whether he lied to me or
not I drove 12 hours to look at a shitty organ.
Like I say - a learning
experience.

Anyway got back from the mtns and Lee had bought a
rig from Johnnie.
Damn....

So Lee has a bit much invested in OK organs. One
rig is a BC with a 21H
one speed Leslie. He wants $1500 for the pair. You
know the BC is old
as Earth itself. They are OK. The case is nice.
But no scanner
vibrato, no percussion, square cut keys, ratchet
dbs, no foldback. A
different beast from a B3. 21Hs are nice if you can
deal with brake and
tremolo or plan to do a 2 speed conversion. Great
sounding hardwood
cabinets compared to the pressboard shelves of a
122. Great Leslie.
He'll take less $$. I bet a grand takes it home.

He has a B2 with Trek percussion and a 122RV. This
was the Jimmy Foster
organ. This Leslie amp needs service in my opinion.
It distorts too
easily. If it were mine I'd send it off to one of
my favorite techs -
Sal Azz in Buffalo or Bob Schleicher in Oakland and
have it rebuilt for
$200 or something. Other than that it is a fine
organ. You know the B2
has ratchet drawbars and still has the square cut
keys. He *wants* $2500
for that pair. This organ had neon installed under
the manuals. tacky
tacky. That was removed and a few problems were
created but that is
fixed now I believe. At one time all metal surfaces
of the organ carried
110V!!

The key is he is moving and needs to sell them. If
he gets what he's
asking then he'll take it. If not he'll take
whatever is offered.

The market price of Hammond organs in NC has
increased in the last 2
years for sure. I know where good organs are every
day of the week.
Matter of fact just picked up a C3 yesterday and my
buddy in Fayettvile
had 2 A100s and a beautiful B3 and is getting 3-4
more organs and about
10 more Leslies this week. But the gospel market
has the market sewn up
to some high prices. A B3 and Leslie in GC will be
6K on a good day. If
you are patient you'll get deals. I do. I'd say if
you had to have a
'B3' - I'd suggest pick up an A100 for $1500-$2000
and put it in that BC
case or something. Enough rambling gotta get back
to work. Let me know
if you need my help.

Ron Newman

That's how I see it Roger.

I could think that individual Hammond sounds can be boring but what makes
the instrument interesting is the dynamics and the variety of the sounds.
The switches from one sound to another. I do like that scream at the top and
swoop down to a sudden soft sub tone at the bottom of the keyboard. But
there are lots of other dramatic tricks. Yeah it's the dramatic tricks which
make the instrument live.

Me too, I use the volume pedal with almost everything I play.

That Joey DeFrancesco master class is good isn't it? You seen it?

But his tutorial book seems to be more for piano. I'd get it if it had lots
for Hammond.

Ron.

Hi Ron,

when I exercise on the pedals I mainly use I foot but I use both for
"walking" bass lines and "fast" lines...
I've often heard that both pedals are used in these two cases but that
means you can't use dynamics whilst playing... I really like to use
dynamics in my playing... so I think that I foot is preferable.

Just my 2c,

Roger

Does anyone ever use both feet?

(Does anyone use feet at all I wonder?)

Ron.
