Reserving Modification Numbers
Group Moderator
Beloved Members,
?
Sorry to impose upon your day of rest and relaxation, but subsequent to the discussion on Modification Numbers, and prompted by todays note on DMKGRF I am reminded that most developers felt changing modification numbers was a BAD idea, and would like to be able to reserve numbers for your modifications in advance.
So to assist in this I have created some pages in the Wiki
?
?
as :-
?
?
and
?
?
where you can reserve numbers. If there are any clashes please let me know.?

Re: Support for 3066 Graphic Terminal
Hello, I dislike removing support from the product, but I'm not against removing 3066 console support.? Just some questions. ?When did IBM remove support for the 3066? Is it possible to add an additional register for addressability? How did IBM handle the addressability issue for DMKGRF? As I said, I'm not against removing the support for the 3066 console, but the future does concern me.? I suspect there will be other changes in the?future for DMKGRF, and removing device support won't be the solution.? Maybe adding a register now is a consideration.? Thank you. As an aside, sitting at that console with its "not" microfiche viewer was quite something... but its keyboard was crap.? But... nostalgia aside, I would like to open up some addressability in DMKGRF for other things I am working on... namely dynamic screen sizes.? Thoughts?? Cheers, William |

The other thing is that our systems are small and generally just single user, so the number of i/os issued by XNET across the channel isn't going to be much of an impact.? XNET doesnt do any "heartbeat" i/o, so if you are not doing anything at your 3270 terminal dialed to XNET, then there is no idle-time CTC i/o. Does the lack of a "heartbeat" help or hinder? I don't know. I have kept my two KVMs up and running for 8 days, and sessions dialed to/through each XNET, and it doesn't drop.
?
What I did discover, is if one VM system goes down, planned or otherwise, you can not reestablish the XNET connections without re-IPLing the XNET on the surviving machine.
?
I tried to use the V cuu ACT/INACT to reestablish the connections, but that didn't work. Is it supposed to?

I would ask, for consideration the following:
?
0. Don't clear the stack, but read it, so when you IPL XNET you could stack D NODES and D TASKS to show up in your spooled console?
?
1. SMSG capability, so I could SMSG D NODES and get the response back.
2. A restart capability, via SMSG? to reconnect systems when a failure happens. ?
Thanks for providing this utility!

SX20-4400-0 IBM Virtual Machine/System Product,Quick Guide for Users
I have preserved SX20-4400-0 IBM Virtual Machine/
System Product Quick Guide for Users which I did not see in BitSavers.? There is a later version but sometimes one a couple years earlier is better for the release that is being used especially with retro-computing under emulation.? I let Al know so he could add it to BitSavers.? I added a copy to the Internet Archive here scanned at 600 dpi. Notice: The term VM/SP, as used in this publication, refers to VM/SP when used in conjunction with VM/370 Release 6. First Edition (September 1980) This edition, SX20-4400, applies to the IBM Virtual/System Product, and to all subsequent releases unless otherwise indicated in new editions or Technical Newsletters. Changes are periodically made to the information herein; before using this publication in connection with the operation of IBM systems, consult the latest IBM System 370 and 4300 Processors Bibliography, Order No. GC20-0111, for the editions that are applicable and current. -- Best Regards, Sam Knutson |

I just have played around with the ZOC TN3270 emulator ... 3270 type DYNAMIC . EE V1.2.5 can make good use of physical screen size 81 lines and 200 columns (allows LRECL/WORKL 193 plus prefix area) just out of the box on an untouched VM/370 Community Edition V1R1.2 ... and I have not broken that because of my modifications and extensions.

-----Original Message-----My fault, should have said, but sometimes things feel obvious. The idea was that in the days before the Internet you could put the BLOCKTAP module in the first file, so you could then read the rest of the tape. In any case, thank you Mark. Much appreciated.Dave |
Support for the XEDIT "SET SCREEN" command, particularly in its generalized form, will be particularly attractive when I finish my CP mod to support arbitrary (almost) 3270 screen sizes... it's pretty cool when you have nice 40" 4K monitor and put up a 160x200 3270 window divided into several logical screens... the CP part is a lot of code but pretty straight forward.? For EE, the challenge might be dealing with enhanced Diag8C results and the generalized screen management.. and the new work dealing with:
All in all.. a bunch of work but.. what a cool result when it works

I cannot promise when I might be able to roll out the split screen feature, but I have to prepare for it now.
?
Quote from "KEDIT for Windows 1.6.1 Help", Mansfield Software Group:
EE currently handles the setting for the prefix area at the Global level but it should be at the View level as it works in XEDIT/THE/KEDIT. The data structures for the View level simply do not exist in EE yet. There are a lot more of SET options that have to be migrated from Global level to View level, or to File level at least. If we might see multiple views of the same file in the future, it makes sense to define data structures for the View level now, even if we have to live with one view per file only for some time.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýPersonally, I like the split screen feature in XEDIT. ?It is especially handy when I use a 43 line terminal definition. ?For copy/paste operations it is really nice to be able to navigate different sections of the files. ?I only have ever used two virtual screens though.I really do appreciate your efforts in incorporating XEDIT functions into EE. ?Keep up the good work. Look for 1987.87TL.AWS.zip in a VMWORKSHOP folder.

I need your feedback: is it important to have XEDIT's SET SCREEN command in EE ?
?
XEDIT allows to divide the physical screen into multiple logical screens. Multiple files are visible at the same time, or a file is visible in multiple views. THE (The Hessling Editor) has implemented this, KEDIT for Windows partially.
?
This is a big change to EE's infrastructure, the question is to do it now or to do it never.
