Ivan G0LNC / CP8XA

I had a long Skype call with Ivan last night.? He is currently in Bogata, Columbia on a visit to Claribel’s sister.? He has sold his farm as it was too much for him.? He had it up to 110 acres of grazing land, but with no mains power he had to milk his 150 cattle by hand daily.? Then taking the milk to a Co-op distributor by motor cycle over 7 miles of un-metalled roads , meant he really had? no time for anything else.? So when he got an offer for the farm, he took it.
?
Now, Claribel has a shop in Rurrenabaque selling fashions.? They have to drive to La Paz or to a place called Trinidad to get stock for the shop.? This can take 3 days.? A few months ago, they got stuck on a floating pontoon bridge that broke away during a flood and were stuck on that for nearly 24 hours.
?
Ivan is doing a bit of tourist guide work and some translation work.? He is also gold panning in one of the national parks.? It usually takes 11 days walking to get to the place where they work, so he can be away from home for nearly a month at a time.? They now have mains electricity and a very flaky internet connection at the house.? He managed to get Google maps aerial views of the area where they are gold panning so they can find a route, but it takes almost a full day to download a single map page to print it off.
?
He has got a small antenna up at the house and is occasionally active on 10 Mhz CW, but he has come from a place where he had zero noise and room to put up rhombics and vee beams to a place where he is restricted to only about 30 metres of antenna space and has a permanent S6 noise level.? However, he is about to buy a small piece of land right on the edge of the town where he wants to build a house and have a smallholding.? It will be less than 20 acres in all.? He should be able to get some half decent antennas in the patch.
?
That is a short summary of a 40 minute call.? He sends 73 to all and will let me know when he is active again on a regular basis.

Radio Aerial

Hi, Penny Ward here, if any of you are old enough, you may remember my husband Bob G8LGA. Due to health problems, Bob can no longer work a radio. There is a fairly large radio aerial on the chimney in Maidstone (standard 2 storey house height) motorised box to go with it. This would be free to anyone who can take it down or pay for someone to take down. Please let me know if anyone is interested. Don't know type, but prob you could see it on the google pics, it's in Horton Downs, ME158TN. Also up for grabs is pre war ships radio, RCA, very heavy, have offered elsewhere as well today. I will be in tomorrow, Wed 21st should anyone want to pop round and see.

Welcome to your new amateurs'
newsletter from RSGB

In this issue we take a special look at 20 metres (14 MHz); help you take your first steps into radio sport with the 80m Club Championship; give you some hints and tips on tracking down interference sources in your home; and start to demystify the solar information and forecast in the GB2RS HF propagation report.

But before we move on, one quick update. In the last issue we looked at operating on 70 MHz (4m).

Unfortunately, we may have misled you slightly as to the current bandplan. We've now so that you can see exactly where the beacon, narrowband and FM parts of the band are.

And don't forget to read the monthly "Getting Started In ......" Radcom supplement, which is intended for newcomers too.

The "Getting Started" section of the RSGB website also has a whole host of other material for you to read, plus there are seven back issues of this newsletter.

Note: you'll have to log in to the Members' Only section of the new RSGB website to read " Getting Started" and also log in to the site to read the ezine features below.

Making the most of 20m (14 MHz)

If you have just received your licence, and are finding your way around the HF bands, a good place to start can be 20 metres (14 MHz).

Why? Well, running from 14.000 MHz to 14.350 MHz, 20 metres is probably the most active and consistent band in terms of being able to hear and work DX.

So what can you expect to hear on 20m and where?

Contesting with the RSGB
80m Club Championship

Contesting or “Radio Sport” enjoys a large and loyal following within RSGB's membership. Radio Sport usually involves a competition to see who can contact the most stations in a set period of time on certain band(s) and within specific rules.

Love it or loathe it, contesting gives you the opportunity to hone your operating skills and tweak your equipment to get the best results.

If you have never taken part in a contest before then there is one way that you can dip your toe in the water – and perhaps help out your local club at the same time.

Understanding the GB2RS
Propagation Report - part 1

Each week the GB2RS weekly news report carries a section devoted to propagation.

This is prepared by Martin G3USF and Neil G0CAS of the RSGB's Propagation Studies Committee and usually outlines the solar activity for the past week and looks at the coming week too.

But what does it all mean and why is it important?

Tracking down sources of interference

One of the biggest threats to amateur radio is the rise of electrical and electronic interference.

Every day the problems seems to get worse as more and more devices emit increasing amounts of radio frequency interference (RFI).

But is there anything you can do about it? Well, yes there is. If you think you have a high noise level on the HF bands, or you are hearing raspy/buzzy sounds, it might be time to take a closer look at your own home.

In the next issue:

  • Antennas - impedance and reactance
  • Organising and taking part in a special event station
  • Computer logging - how can it help you?
  • Understanding the GB2RS propagation report - Part two

Antenna File

Radio Propagation - Principles & Practice

by Ian Poole, G3YWX

Radio propagation is a vital topic for any radio amateur or anyone with an interest in radio communications.
This book provides a fascinating description of all the relevant information about radio propagation from HF to VHF, UHF and beyond. The book includes everything you need to know including radio waves and how they travel, the atmosphere, the Sun, ionospheric propagation (with the important modes and information), ionospheric storms and aurora, how to predict and assess ionospheric propagation, tropospheric propagation, meteor scatter, and space communications.
You are also guided in making the most of the available equipment choosing the right time and radio band.
Radio Propagation - Practice and Principles is an essential read for anyone associated with radio communications.

Eliminating Noise

Elimination of Electrical Noise

Many radio amateurs experience electrical noise problems and feel forced off the amateur radio bands. Don Pinnock, G3HVA is a firm believer that radio amateurs should deal with the problems rather than not be forced off the air. Elimination of Electrical Noise therefore tells of Don's personal experiences and provides solutions to noise problems that will help many. In Elimination of Electrical Noise, Don details the various types of noise, how it is generated and how best to deal with it.

Dear club colleagues, some current news of matters discussed during an RSGB leadership team meeting this past weekend, plus RSGB membership and local rallies.

??
Youngsters on the air.?
Plans are at an early stage in the RSGB to organise a YOTA UK () event on the 19/20th of July, and ideas are being sought from young amateurs by Steve Hartley G0FUW the chairman of the Training and Education Committee.
?
If you have young members with ideas for this special YOTA weekend please ask them to send these to Steve at tec.chair@...
?
?
Abuse of new licensees.
I am sorry to relay that some full licensees in Kent have been reportedly heard abusing and?threatening those with Foundation and Intermediate callsigns. Though this appears centred around a small area, it has also been reportedly heard on a couple of the east coast repeaters.
?
As I have said during my club visits, the AROS volunteers under the RSGB are seeing an increasing volume of calls to deal with licence infringements and abuse. This appears a key role that amateurs, whether members of the Society or not expect the RSGB to undertake. If you want to volunteer to help the AROS team or to report matters then the contact address is aros@...
?
Further details on the role and approach of AROS can be found at
?
?
Training costs.
While not confirmed as relating to any training centre in Kent, there have been reports on the Tutors reflector of candidates being charged ?300 for the Foundation Morse assessment.
?
I am not aware of any clubs in Kent that conduct training charging more than an acceptable 'admin' charge on top of the actual costs of delivering the training, but should anyone know otherwise please let me know.
?
?
RSGB Membership.
Currently their is an offer of RSGB book vouchers for anyone signing up now, and if paying by direct debit the costs can be spread monthly, quarterly or yearly. Details can be found at ???
?
Remember that their are also Junior and Student membership categories for our young amateurs, details are on the RSGB website
?
?
Kent rallies.
Thank you to colleagues for organising the Rainham and Dover rallies this year, where both?had good weather and appeared well attended. Thank you especially to those who visited the RSGB stand and bought some of the books, and to those that came over to talk or seeking information.
?
Many of you will know that the West Kent ARS are holding a Radio & Electronics Fair on the 14th of September at the Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys, more details nearer the time.

Subject: Licence Revalidation

?
Dear club colleagues,?Ofcom have asked for the help of the RSGB to get the message out, reminding our UK amateur friends and colleagues that their licence requires revalidation at least every five years. Currently?some 45% of amateur licences still?remain to be validated.
?
The quickest way to revalidate and which can be done at any time, is to do so “on-line” via the Ofcom website .?If individuals need assistance in the process, Ofcom staff are available to help on the telephone but their limited availability means that the workload needs to be staggered to avoid undue delays.??
?
Ofcom have advised that any licences which remain unvalidated by a date to be agreed, will be considered as lapsed, for which their will be a renewal fee, currently ?20.
?
Please ensure that this reminder gets to your club members, friends and colleagues.
?
While writing, my I remind you of the RSGB membership offer, where members?receive RSGB book vouchers for recruiting new members. Details of the offer can be found at
