clifton xmas eve impromptu net update 1.
hi all, There is radio life out there! Have heard from Mark, steve, clive keith and tony/ suzanne so far( dec 16) but no martin dcg--. Mark and Keith recommend 40m as a better inter g bet on xmas eve rather than the traditional 80m . Thus can I suggest qsy to say 7.177 plus/minus from 12 to 1330 utc and try 20/15 /12 and 10 for Tony HUZ after that on his newly published F's ? Should be about 9.30 AM for him stuck in harbour in Antigua far from home at Christmas poor devil! Incidentally 7.177 mhz is one of the favourite f c for the annual KW radio revival weekend 7 and 8 th jan 2023 - see PW and Radcom write up and the KW-radio @ groups.io user group. Yours true will be qrv ( GB3KW) at the Cray valley scout hall qth in Eltham SE London and there will be several other KW special event call signs on air that weekend. And hope to hear the Swedish Alexanderson test tx on 17.1 khz on the 24th - VLF anyone? Well dreams are still free! cheers Lawrie FAA ( fri 16th)

Seasons Greetings
Dear Cliftonaires, We are sending this mail and greetings attachment to wish all our friends in the Clifton a very happy and healthy Christmas together a prosperous and Covid free New Year. Here both of us are thrice jabbed with Pfizer vaccine and are in preparation for our forthcoming sojourn at sea. Our trusted Tern D8 folding bicycles are in their transit cases. The KX3 transceiver is settled into its Peli Case, the G-whip antenna is wrapped inside a fishing rod cover Allowing we get permission from the ¡®master¡¯ of the vessel we look forward to working as many of you as possible as we cross the Atlantic, meander round the Caribbean and return to these shores via EA8 during January. Rest assured all those on our established ¡®maritime mobile¡¯ mailing list will be appraised of possible skeds and frequencies. Catch you on the wireless! Stay safe! 73 es 88s de Tony es Suzanne

Dr John Theobald G3EQM SK
Hello fellow Cliftonaires, I was phoned today by John Lambert (G3FNZ) who informed me that Dr John Theobald (G3EQM) one of the founder members of the Clifton was now ¡®silent key,¡¯ having passed away about fortnight ago. This information came from John Theobald¡¯s XYL who stated that her husband had passed away peacefully. Dr John (G3EQM) had been a school friend of John Lambert when they had both attended St Dunstan¡¯s College during the war years. John Theobald went on to qualify as physician at Guy¡¯s Hospital specialising in care of the elderly. Unfortunately we have no other information other than Call Book gives John Theobald¡¯s address as in Exeter. I am sure our thoughts are with his family at this sad time. 73 es stay safe de Tony es Suzanne.

Relays for sat station 4
Hi everyone. Many of you know I operate remotely. I¡¯m currently building a remote sat station that needs 2m and 70cm. I am using an SDR play for receive, streamed over a raspberry pi server. Some sats are 2m up and 70cm down and others are vice versa. This means I need to remotely swap over the antennas between tx and rx. This is where the Clifton connection comes in. G0DCG gave me his venerable 2m valve amp with a 4CX150 many years ago. I never got it going, but the coaxial transfer relay ended up in my box of useful bits. It¡¯s now been pressed into service in this project. Thanks Martin! The attached photo shows the SDR rx, relay, 28V relay driver board and a preamp bias T all in one badly built box. Last place in the Clifton club construction contest this year. cheers Steve M0BPQ

Clifton Club Country Club Net 18th July 3
Clifton Country Club Net Sunday 18th July 2021 This net was mooted by Lawrie (G4FAA) in preparation for ¡°freedom day¡± on Monday 19th July when many of Covid 19 restriction are to be removed. When I checked 80m 30mins before the net the band was almost deserted, with the exception of a couple of DL¡¯s working AM on 3.675. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised a few minutes after 3pm (BST) to hear Lawrie (G4FAA) and Colin (G0UJK) in conversation on the net frequency. I was slightly ¡®late on parade¡¯ as I had been monitoring the activity on 40m, in case poor conditions on 80m forced us to ¡®up stakes¡¯ and QSY to that band. However, both Colin and Lawrie were very readable, albeit their signals were hovering around S3 to S7 in the dips and swells of long slow QSB. Both Colin and Lawrie said had been saddened by the news that Peter(G3PJB) was now SK. Colin went on to say, knowing Peter had been a member of the Royal Signals ARS he passed the information regarding Peter¡¯s passing to members of the local Royal Signals net. A number of those present on the RS net had known Peter and appreciated Colin making the effort to notify them. Meanwhile the weather in the UK had turned decidedly tropical with expected ambient air temperatures of 28C to 31C expected by the end of the afternoon. Lawrie said that he was operating in his conservatory where he was ¡®melting¡¯ in 30+ C, even with a 50watt fan directed at him. The heat had been the main factor for him not using his valve driven KW equipment, opting for the cooler solid-state Icom kit in lieu. Colin said he was pleased that life was slowly returning to normal, being employed in the construction industry he was now on a three-day week and looked forward to the industry gaining momentum. During the extra time at home Colin had been working on improving his UHF/VHF antennas, to this end he had deployed a new longer pole to support his 2m and 70cms arrays. He also said that he had been spending time at Peter (G7ULL)¡¯s QTH in Chislehurst as Peter was recovering from major surgery. I am sure we all wish Peter (G7ULL) a speedy and full recovery. During his time at Peter¡¯s hill top QTH Colin had worked both 2m and 70cms making contacts with ease. This had in part inspired Colin to upgrade his own VHF and UHF antennas. I said that I had given a few points away during the VHF Field Day over the weekend of 3rd & 4th July. Disappointingly conditions were reasonably flat, although I worked into central France, eastern regions of Germany and northern Scotland with 50watts from my FT991A and an 8ele at 50ft. My usually reliable contacts in GW and GD were not heard. Last year I had the advantage of 100watts output of the TS2000. Saying that I found the receive characteristics on the FT991A were much superior. Earlier this month I assisted Terry (M0TNE) who lives about half a mile from me to deploy a Hexbeam. My AA600 antenna analyser showed excellent the points of resonance and acceptable SWR on each of the six bands straight out of the box without any need for adjustment. This antenna has a fairly small footprint being a mere 6m in diameter and has proved very effective allowing Terry to hear and work stations from 20m to 6m that were not available to him before. Lawrie said he was not sure what a Hexbeam was but assumed it was similar to the ¡®cobweb¡¯ design. I agreed there are similarities although the Hexbeam has the appearance of an inverted open umbrella and the feed arrangements are somewhat different. I reminded Lawrie that there is a photograph of a Hexbeam on page 88 of August¡¯s edition of RadCom. Colin told the group he had taken advantage of the recent periods of enhanced propagation on 2m working into SP and OK. His best DX for this season of ¡®tropo¡¯ and sporadic e was into Serbia, some 1300 Kms. Lawrie suggested that I should come up on the 2m UKAC evenings held on the first Tuesday each month. Both he and Colin are regulars on these short evening sessions. I noted the next session in my diary, but I did explain that I am the wrong side of high ground to my south which can prove awkward

Pre release CC net
Whatho Fellow Cliftonaires, Firstly, I trust this e-mail finds you all safe and well and looking forward to a super summer with improving conditions both on the wireless and weather front. Lawrie (G4FAA) e-mailed suggesting we hold a ¡®pre-release net¡¯ or ¡®pre-Demob net¡¯ on Sunday 18th July¡¡¡¡. An excellent optimistic reason as ever from Lawrie! As a result The next Clifton Country Club net will be on Sunday 18th July at 1400Hrs GMT (3pm BST) on or near 3.690Mhz +/- Why not fire up the transceiver and join the gang on 80m to see how your Clifton pals have been faring and what they are planning to do after ¡®release day¡¯ on 19th July. Needless to say, the return to full relaxation of restrictions still depends on the status of the virus ¡®D¡¯ variant. So fingers crossed! Short wave listening, a good start. 2
Hello Fellow Cliftonaires, Following a recent chat on the ¡®twisted pair¡¯ with John Lambert (G3FNZ) about our respective paths into the hobby. John told me how as a 15yr old he had been given a copy of ¡®Practical Wireless¡¯ by a friend. This led John to building the three valve battery operated receiver that had featured in the ¡®PW¡¡¡¡.The rest as they would say now is history. I hope you enjoy reading John¡¯s article together with the letter/QSL (jpeg attached) as much as I did. A Message from RMS Queen Mary By John Lambert In 1945 I returned to South East London as a 15 year old school boy, having been away for 5 years as an evacuee. I became very interested in the workings of radio sets, and one day a friend gave me a copy of a magazine called ¡°Practical Wireless¡± and in this was the design of a 3 valve battery operated shortwave receiver. I decided that I would like to build this, and checked on my pocket money but after several donation request visits to my grandparents, had enough money to purchase all the components necessary. I built the receiver, and to my delight and surprise it worked, and I spent many happy hours listening to broadcasts from around the world. At that time the majority of the transmissions were either national or commercial broadcast stations, as very few countries had started to re-issue amateur licences. It was with great surprise, therefore, that on one occasion I heard two men talking to each other, and this intrigued me and it was some time before I understood what was going on. The answer was that it was an interview being made for the BBC programme ¡°Monday Night at Eight¡±, wherein the programme comprised a number of small snippets of information deemed to be of interest to the general public. One of the items that was broadcast each week was an interview with a famous person whose birthday coincided with the specific broadcast. After listening to the transmission for some time I realised that this was an interview being made for this programme, and the person of interest was Sir Thomas Beecham. The only trouble was that Sir Thomas had been to America and was on his way home, and was on board the RMS Queen Mary in mid-Atlantic. The transmission was spoiled because Sir Thomas would insist on shouting into the microphone, which caused considerable distortion. Also that somebody on board the ship kept removing their headphones, which resulted in all sorts of squeals and other weird noises. This particular interview was being made via shortwave radio, and had to be carefully controlled to avoid interference and signal fading, to both of which this method of long-distance transmission is very prone. I was so intrigued by the whole thing, that I had the temerity to write to Cunard¡¯s for the attention of the Chief Radio Officer of the Queen Mary, and a few weeks later was delighted to receive a reply confirming my comments about the transmission, and was ¡°over the moon¡± to receive a picture of the Queen Mary¡¯s radio room. Similar to John, albeit a few decades later I too was an avid SWL. Again starting with a regenerative two valve battery operated receiver. Then acquiring an Eddystone 670 receiver on a ¡®long term loan¡¯ from the late Ken Willis (G8VR) who was a neighbour of mine at the time. Being an SWL was a rite of passage and the accepted pathway into amateur radio. Unfortunately this aspect of the hobby seems to have lost ground as manually tuning a receiver among the general population is a ¡®forgotten skill¡¯ in these days of ¡®Alexa¡¯ and digital streaming. For those of us who still have the curiosity, temerity and perseverance, the HF bands outside our frequency allocations are still fertile areas For example, a very strong AM signal on 3.973 MHz proclaiming to be ¡®Amateur Radio on line news¡¯. This featured a very professional presentation of news items from the ARRL, RSGB, Australian Radio Society as well as JARL etc. I have a suspicion the signals originated in central Europe (Germany?). A clandestine ¡°numbers station¡± was found on 4.212Mhz. Albeit, using USB with five letter groups in phon

Cllfton Field Day Tent 5
Hi everyone Lawrie, myself and others enjoyed a blast from the past last night (Thurs 18 March). Cray Valley had a Zoom lecture given by Nick Bradley G4IWO from the Denby Dale club . Nick turned out to be a former Clifton member. One of Nick's slides featured the old white field day which became known as the 'Agincourt Special' due to its timeless medieval design. It was a square shaped bell tent with a central and very substantial wooden pole which sorted a magnificent finial ball on the top which presumably stopped the rain from going down inside. Nick reminisced over those outings with Jakey at the helm and remembered that we used a farm on the North Downs but could not recall the name. Yours truly came to his rescue with, of course, 'White Hill Farm' above Shoreham Village. I did not overlap membership with Nick despite doing quite a few HF NFDs up there. My memories were mainly of Jakey, Peter G3RQZ, Dave G3JJZ and Cyril G3DIC as the principal operators with myself and Alan Broadstock G3XTO (who joined the club as Bill Martin's protegee and took the morse test with me) as apprentice operators/loggers. The many G8s at the time (APV, AQD, CCL, DDW, DIU) plus Norman Moore, Dave Reed and Mr Fletcher (Steve's Dad) formed the logistics department. Apologies to any I may have forgotten to include. Historical insight 2
Whatho Gang, Just to say how much I appreciate the historical insight given by John (G3FNZ) into the background, activities and personalities involved in the ¡®early days¡¯ of the Clifton. Keep it coming John it is all fascinating stuff. More so as I am one of those who joined fairly late in day (circa 1981), when club meetings were held in the upstairs room of the New Cross Inn, at the junction of Clifton Rise and New Cross Road. 73 es stay safe Tony es Suzanne.

CLIFTON
Hi Chaps a few more comments re the early days of the club For theD/F outings some members built their own receivers but others used the receiver part of the ex gov type 68 set. The RSGB field day at Mansfield park was big learning curve as our r kit was mains powered r so we had to use car battery plus a rotary converter and an ex gov petrol generator. This latter was not strong enough so had to shut down every hour to /recharge - One year to celebrate a club anniversary (possible 15 yrs) we had a semi formal dinner for members and partners at Catford cricket club . As my father was president of the cricket club I was able have the use of the club rooms for free so kept the cost to reasonable level. That¡¯s enough waffle from me 73 John G3FNZ

Teleprinter
Hi everyone, I know several of you collect vintage kit, but does anyone have a working teleprinter? You may be aware that I do most of my radio now with the local Scouts at Gilwell Park and we are designing a "code breaking" Scout activity to be delivered in a Bletchley Park style hut. A rattling teleprinter pulling some rtty signals off the air might add something to the feel of the activity and I wondered if there is one we could borrow, or if it is delicate then the owner would be welcome to join us to look after his pride and joy. I appreciate that this isnt what really happened in WWII, but a 15 year old wont know the difference! 73 Steve, M0BPQ PS - might be immaterial if not scout events run this summer!

Atrocious Condx on Sunday's Net 2
Hello Gang, Yesterday¡¯s atrocious conditions on 80m apparently prevented all but the well located and well equipped stations from being heard. Peter (G3PJB) tenaciously called against a deluge of noise and shuddering QSB. At best he was 2&3 here in Norfolk, it took several attempts to resolve his call-sign. Even Peter (G3RQZ) was not his normal ¡®needle bending¡¯ self. His signals hovered around 57 and only once or twice reached +20db for fleeting moments courtesy of his TL922 linear. Both Peter (G3RQZ) and I struggled to resolve Peter¡¯s (G3PJB) transmissions without much success. After a brief discussion of our experiences of obtaining our Covid vaccinations and leaving several extended gaps for other others to join, Peter and I decided it was pointless to continue. We therefore closed the net at 3pm. Following the net I received an apology from Lawrie G4FAA via the G3GHN reflector. Lawrie went on to suggest we have the next CC Net to mark being released from the third ¡®lockdown¡¯. May I suggest we wait and see what Boris has to announce at this evening¡¯s press conference. Thanks to all those who tried to join the net but were defeated by the conditions. To think that only a few days ago 80m was in such good shape my 5w QRP signals were gaining 599 reports. Strange business this wireless, 73 es 88s de Tony es Suzanne.
