Hello fellow Cliftonaires,

?

Just to let you know the Clifton pre-Christmas seasonal net was held at 1400GMT today (17/12) on 7.195Mhz. This frequency was suggested by Lawrie (G4FAA) which turned out to be ideal for inter-G.? Such that Steve M0BPQ came straight back to my first tentative call at 13.55hrs……..Conditions were such that the band was generally noise free and the reports were 59+ both ways…………..Due to technical issues at home Steve ?had made the journey to Gilwell Park to operate in an unheated scout hut. Needless to say we had quite a deal of catching up to do since our last QSO when I was /MM. ?We kept frequency warm for just under an hour, awaiting the arrival of other Clifton members, unfortunately this was not to be.

?

Before the net I received a phone-call from John Lambert (G3FNZ) giving his apologies for not being able to join the net. However, he did ask that I pass on his best wishes for the Christmas and the New Year to all those present. Many thanks John.!

?

Have a great Christmas and happy New Year!

?

Catch you on the wireless in 2024!

Whatho fellow Cliftonaires!

?

Having read a recent post by Lawrie (G4FAA) regarding a ‘Festive net’ over the Christmas period. I thought I would send my ‘apologies’ as however much Suzanne and I would like to join in the merry throng. Both the memsahib and I will be somewhere off the coast of Scandinavia? Due to the prevailing WX in that part of world we will not be taking our radio-kit as it is far too cold to operate outside on the open deck…….Ice boots and crampons will be the order of the day Hi!

?

We have another nautical adventure on the horizon navigating in much warmer climes, when radio and bikes will be de-rigueur. Information will be circulated via our mailing list once we embark.

May we wish you a very happy Christmas and a healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year.

Hi All,

The 17th is easier for me than 24th as I will be with family by then.

I don't have an 80m antenna up at the moment, but can do 40m.

Cheers
Steve??

Seems sunday 17th for the proposed

Thus suggest 2pm on sunday 24th on or near 7.195mhz as an alternative--

ok 'tis xmas eve already but take a break from peeling spuds men!!

Whatho gang!

Today 20th October, we have been in port at Punta Delgada the Azores, unfortunately we have been plagued with fairly continuous rain driven by strong westerly breeze which prevented any radio ops from the open deck. However we did manage to get out on the bikes a rode a fairly moist 38miles. On our return to the ship we spent the rest of the afternoon packing the bikes into their hard shell transit cases.

As I type we are now underway on a course of 51 degrees towards the UK. The ship is rolling well again as we have strong winds across the deck.

The forecast is for the wind to swing into the SW and therefore it will be on our stern and if the rain ceases we should able to operate.

Tomorrow will be our last day of ops as we have remove all the feeder, counterpoises the antenna and brackets ready to pack in both the bicycles cases and our suitcases before consider packing our clothes.

If the WX allows, hopefully we will have opportunity of working you tomorrow. On 12m,15m or 20m. On Thursday evening whilst in port at Punta Delgada 20m (14.185) gave some very good UK and European QSOs

Hello Friends,

We are just off Ponta Delgada in the Azores. We will be picking up the pilot at 11am and be alongside by 1pm.

Yesterday there was a sterling effort from Colin G0UJK, Peter G7ULL albeit I could just copy them on 12m but unfortunately they could not copy me very well. I just manged a CW QSO with Laurie G4FAA.

I will be on the air this morning from about 10am GMT on 15m mainly on or near 21.275 +/- QRM with 21.058 as a secondary.

When we dock Suzanne and I will out on the bicycles this afternoon. We are port tonight so we hope to be on the air early this evening weather permitting possibly on 20m & 30m around 14.185 and 10.118 both +/- QRM

Hello again dear friends,

We are now 350miles west of the Azores on a heading of 90 degrees. The sea state is calm (2m swell) and we have 15knt wind on our stern.

Again we will be on deck operating as long as the WX stays fair. We will start on 15m and as the day progress we will move to 12m. Favoured frequencies 24.965 24,906 and 21.275 (note change) and 21058............

During the day at our time of 11am we will move our clocks forward an hour to 12noon.........This of course will not affect you but we will then be on GMT on the ship.

We a really good day yesterday to make up for the lost days due to the storm , which is now hitting the UK and Western Europe................We worked numerous station in Europe UK and All regions of the USA & Canada, including two mobiles actually on the road in Canada and France. One of the highlights of our day was working Cliff ,Tony & Terry at the Marconi museum at the Lizard in Cornwall (GB2GM) on 15m.

Our Captain says we may run into more unsettles WX today

Whatho! Clifton ARS and radio friends,

We are presently in the mid-Atlantic a1000miles from anywhere..........

We have storm force 10 winds across the deck with 7 to 9mtr swell.

Yesterday we worked into the UK ,and northern Europe also the mid and west coast USA and Canada from a sheltered operating position in the stairwell of deck 10. Although we are sheltered from most of the wind it is not rain proof..........We will endeavour to get on the air. today but this is in no way certain......

All our ops will be on 12m as we cannot get to our antenna to change bands due the wind conditions............Watching our antenna this morning as we had breakfast it certainly was whipping about. in the 70+mph wind

Dear Clifton ARS and radio friends,

Sunday 15th Oct. should have been a sea day as we headed to St John's Newfoundland with a planned arrival on Monday 16th Oct. St John's was to be our last Canadian port before crossing the Atlantic for the Azores.

However, a violent storm now approaching Newfoundland and the eastern seaboard of Nova Scotia has caused us to abandon our visit to Newfoundland and we are now heading east across the Atlantic to the Azores two days earlier than planned as we try and out run this storm system.

Unfortunately, we will still encounter gale or storm force winds associated with this deep depression. As a result we will not be able to operate the radio as the upper decks are closed and all the deck furniture has either been removed or tied down.

We will update you if and when conditions improve as we cross the Atlantic
