Amp
QST March and April 1999. 1 watt in, 50-60 out. I built one and it works well. On the other hand, I hardly ever use it. 5 watts is almost always enough (except for SSB when you are down in the noise). Remember, that's only around 10db (5 watts to 50 watts). So if you are 10 over 9 with the amp on, you will still be S9 with the amp off (assuming the S meter is calibrated). 73 Mike Maiorana, KU4QO g0vgz@... wrote:

Bit quiet on our msgs isnt it ?
My, its a bit quiet on the FT817 egroup front isnt it ? ever since Paul W8KC suggested everyone to calm down by stop jumping up & down & getting Yaesu to dump a couple of hundred $ on the price. I honestly dont think it works this way Paul. I beleive that all the singing & dancing excitement within this group can only justify Yaesu to export the thing in the first place. (They originally manufactured it for their market only !, being staunch montain back-packers in Japan) It was I take to be a thank you to their home buyers of Yaesu. But maybe I am wrong, with such a product it must put Icom, Kenwood and maybe Alinco scratching/banging their designer's heads together. Maybe the other big boys have something similair but have been pipped to the post? I for one know the current price of the Yen to the english pound and if I find the price being near the ?1k mark as one retailer over here in the UK suggested (a profit of about 100% +) I will not buy one, also the way the market with Amateur radio is going in general I think ALL Emporiums worldwide should think before they release a ridiculous seling price to us lot. after all the FT817 is a qrp rig and I am sure the dedicated qrp lads would rather buy one of those Australian hand held 160-10m rugged thingys (ssb/cw only) and use their other 6/2/70 seperate gear than be ripped off by a Ham retailer, or stick to building their own, as the qrp home-brew gear is simpler & cheap!. We all know the approx cost of this rig and I am sure its worth a couple of hundred $ / ? on the Japanese price but thats all. I also wish JA1MP was around to view the technology he originally pioneered, (SSB & founder of Yaesu). de John.

(Sorry, tires are in the news too much lately.) I wish that docking would take place with rigs. I would have thought that by now, there would be a 2m HT radio that slid into either a front panel or microphone which then is really two radios, portable and mobile. Put a decent receiver in the module and then a small exciter/modulator that would either excite a 5 W HT brick or a 50 W mobile amp. kt3a After having the Yaesu FT-290MKII/690/790 series of radios I was somewhat suprised that the design of the FT-817 was not similar. The docking mobile amp and snap on low pwr bat pack is really a cool setup and works very well as a mobile/shoulder pack QRP set up. Of course it is similar to the MK1 series with the internal battery pack and all. Makes me wonder if there will later be some snap on pack of C cells or larger and 50-100 mobile docking amp of some sort. That would be VERY COOL in my book. Think I'll sign up and get one of the first ones anyway though!! Best-kept ham equipment secret?

The message <000801c01d08$1869baa0$87202940@pavilion> from "Cameron C.R. Bailey" <cbailey@...> contains these words: You're absolutely right, Cameron. I've still got a "Docking Booster" which I've always used with an old Icom IC-32, and into which the handheld slots, via an Adaptor Plate which attaches onto the battery fitting. Obviously, a different plate is needed for every style of battery top fitting, but that is hardly a major problem. In fact, there actually wasn't one in the range for the IC-32, and I had to adapt one from a different Icom model. I suppose that the recent trend towards using cellphone batteries attached to the rear of an H-T case would now represent a problem, but that certainly wasn't the case when the Booster was being sold. The concept obviously works best with an H-T which has it's controls (and especially the display) on the "top" panel, but it's been no great problem using it with the IC-32. The unit has switchable high (from memory it's 35 watts V and 25 watts U) and low power, and a switchable pre-amp. In fact, this unit and the IC-32 may reluctantly have to be sold if I decide to order an FT-817 (readers all over the world are now saying "If? Yeah, right!"). The point is that this unit, which I believe is now unobtainable, was virtually never advertised in the UK, and still attracts amazed comments from hams with wide experience of many different handheld and mobile rigs. Well, why would you, if yo can sell a ham a mobile rig AND an H-T... Bob, G8IYK

5->100W linear amp (Was: Digest Number 18)
There's a neat, 50W design in the current ARRL handbook. It uses two commodity (read: dirt cheap) MOSFETs at 24V/4A for 50W PEP off 2W in. eBay usually lists 100W linears at $100 or so. The design is similar to Motorola application notes; the box looks like a very short production runs by no-name brands, targeting illegal CBers (5W AM/SSB input). BUYERS BEWARE -- you probably need a low pass filter to bring harmonic emissions down to US legal level (-40dBc?). On 4z4kq

By the way for the one of you who do travel a lot, and plan to use the 817 for this purpose. I have been using with quite a bit of good luck a Barker and Williamson purchased used at a ham fest. It is advertised as a window antenna, and comes with a whip, coils for 40 to 10 metre, and a counterpoise, and it is super easy to transport and set up. . It is not a KT34XA but will get you signal out fairly well indeed. The price of around 90$ is a bit high but during hamfest I have seen them very low, I got mine for 20$ in mint condition. 73 de Patrick W3PO/VQ9PO/ex:F6DWY ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! FT-817 Seen in San Antonio Ham Store
Worked someone on 17M who said they worked in a ham store in the San Antionio TX area and that the Yaesu had come by to show sample of the FT-817 and had possibly left on in the store as a demo. Sounds like it won't be too long till they are available here. He said no firm price had been mentioned but he heard about $800.
