I cannot turn off repeater shift mode on ten meters while in usb mode
13
Hi guys: I have a question about my ft817. Yesterday, I was on 28336 on ten meter usb mode. When I attempted to answer a buddy, and I key up the mic, The frequency would shift upwards to transmit on 283445. I looked up the menus to see if repeater shift was on, and I got the following: Menu Item 42 [RPT SHIFT] Function: Set the magnitude of the Repeater Shift. Available Values: 0 ~ 99.99 MHz Default: Depends on transceiver version, and the band in use. Each band¡¯s repeater shift (HF/50/144/430 MHz) may be set independently. The thing is, when I enter menu 42 and turn the tuning knob to the left to try to get it to 0, then hit hold the function button to get out of the menu, The voice box I have reports nothing. Has anyone else ever encountered this problem? Please advise as you like. Mike M. Mike mcglashon AD9CA Email: Michael.mcglashon@... Ph: 618 783 9331

Advice on selling
10
I plan to sell my FT-817ND in the near future as I'm not using it enough to justify keeping it. It has all the original accessories including the YF-122C and YF-122S Collins mechanical filters. I can't decide whether to include the filters in the sale or sell them separately. Any advice please? -- Mike G8GYW

Witch DSP Filter is Better? BHI or Sotabeams?
7
Hi guys, I would like to install a DSP filter, who can tell me where the advantages and disadvantages are between the sotabeams filter LASERBEAM-817(FTFM-100) and the BHI filter NEDSP1901-KBD. Is it possible to operate the sotabeams filter from the outside, whereas the BHI filter requires two holes to be drilled. Vy 73 de Martin HB3YDM

CAT Display with an CAT Splitter for FT-817ND and others?
7
Hi guys, how does it work? I am looking for a way to add a CAT display? My question: Is it possible to add the AT display with a Y-cable? I have an Ft817ND and an LDT Z-817 tuner in use, and would like to use the original CAT display from the Cris from Australia and not a copy. Vy 73 de Martin HB3YDM

Bioenno 9A battery BOGO deal
2
Hello all, I came across a deal that folks here would likely be interested in, so I'm sharing it here - I have no relation to the seller, just a happy customer. Bioenno is having a BOGO (Buy One Get One) offer on 9 Amp 12 volt LiFePO4 batteries - and as a friend on another group proved [0] these are very nice battery packs. Im pretty sure the deal is only good in the U.S. (sorry), but I encourage you to look into it, it's a great deal, esp if you goo in with a friend and split a pair of batteries. I ordered a pair of these batteries, each with its own 2 amp charger for $115 with $10 s/h, so final cost was $62.50 for a quality 9 amp batter and a nice charger. Here is the link to the deal in their website: https://www.bioennopower.com/products/12v-9ah-lifepo4-battery-pvc Hope some here find this useful, Ken, N2VIP [0] https://www.nk7z.net/are-bioenno-batteries-ratings-correct/

Yaesu XF-122 C, 500 Hz Collins Mechanical,Filter FS
Yaesu XF-122 C, 500 Hz Collins Mechanical Filter For Sale: I have a Yaesu XF-122 C, 500 Hz Collins Mechanical Filter For Sale. It is sometimes called a YF-122 C. It also has the 528-8686-030 Collins number on it. It is for a 455 KHz IF. My understanding is that it fits YAESU FT-817/ 857/897/818, and maybe others. It includes the PC board with connectors. This one works 100% as it should. It also looks like new, as if that matters for a filter inside a rig. Buy it for $250, plus shipping from Florida. Thanks. 73, Ken, W8EK Ken Simpson E-mail to W8EK@... or W8EK@... Voice Phone (352) 732-8400 .

ALC question
Hello, I think I know the answer, but let's see: by the end of the charge (say, 1/5th of estimated battery charge), if I'm TXing SSB or DATA, on 5 W, ALC goes to zero. If I set power to 2.5 W or less, ALC goes back to normal. When the former happens, does it mean the battery is not providing enough voltage to the radio? Daniel PY2TDB.

Winlink with Vara HF and FT-818 via Digirig
3
I've been experimenting with Winlink on my radios and had success with my little trU(SDX) but cannot Tx/Rx winlink with the FT-818. I have CAT control set up OK as the radio tries to connect with various local RMS gateways, but Winlink always reports that a Failure to connect." Ive tested a few different Baud rates without success, and have checked the Digirig settings under SoundCard and it seems to me that there needs to be an adjustment to the transmit audio to the radio from the PC where the ALC is adjusted (that was the key to success with the trU(SDX). Anyone with the above combo who have been successful and can chime in? Or anyone with a depth of knowledge about this radio and soundcard combo. Thanks! Rod VA3MZD

Ft817 shuts off at 10 volts?
19
Hello group! I recently bought a non- ND model Yaesu Ft817 that has the Windcamp 3000mah battery installed. I can charge the battery up to 12v but, once voltage drops down to around 10v the rig shuts off. Is this normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated. 72 Mike

TX ERR on 40m from .101 to .200
33
One of my FT817nds (serial no 4H) won¡¯t transmit on the top half of 40m. My other one is fine and this one works on the lower half and on all other frequencies. I¡¯ve just started using this one on 40, previously it¡¯s been 20m and above. Anyone any ideas please? A web search has only brought up ¡°won¡¯t transmit at all¡±. Any help gratefully received... FT817 over-currents in tx on 18Mhz (17m) and 21Mhz (15m) - any ideas?
HI all, I am trying to repair an early model FT817. It is fine on all bands/modes in RX. It is fine on TX in all modes, except for 18Mhz (17m) and 21Mhz (15m). In the affected bands, measured in CW, the rig draws 3A+ from the bench psu, and RF filter relays buzz loudly. This can trigger a shutdown, or the rig stays on and buzzes terribly. My analysis so far - testing in CW mode: the preamp/driver stage works well. This feeds into the PA finals board, which seems to amplify happily - but supplies too much current in the affected bands. If I separate the predrivers/PA final stage from the RF filtering stage at the balun (T3001 in schematics), and insert a dummy load to absorb the PA final output, the TX works normally (~2A PSU current draw) on ALL BANDS. This suggests the issue is the balun itself or after the balun in the RF filtering stages. According to KA7OEI's fantastic info pages, https://www.ka7oei.com/ft817_rcv.html, 20m & 17m use the same RF filter FIL5, while 15m, 12m & 10m all use FIL6. Given 20m and 12m/10m work ok, this suggests the issue is not in the RF filters themselves, since they work happily 'half the time'. Through experimentation, I notice that reconnecting the balun (T3001) to the RF filter board via an inductor of ~0.3uH (originally discovered after using basic crocodile clip cables to reconnect the stages together), the TX over-current stops - and the rig operates as normal, except for the introduced inductance that rises with frequency, hence lowering the output power (and lowering the PSU current draw) with rising TX frequency. This 'fix' itself causes problems on 50+VHF/UHF I think. It suggests to me there is some low impedance path to ground around 20Mhz (affecting 18Mhz & 21Mhz), and have pulled the board out of the rig to take a look. But nothing seems immediately wrong. Has anyone experienced similar TX over-current on specific bands, where other bands work fine ? Could the issues lie in the RF filters? How best to test balun T3001 to check if it is at fault? Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated, 73 de Matt Nassau, M0NJX

ALC throwing tantrum
Hello, I'm using a generic CAT bluetooth device paired with a DIN/P2 cable connected to FT8CN for an FT8 interface. Out of whim, once or twice, if I TX at 5 W on 10 m, the ALC goes to 0. If I change the power to 2.5 W (only change I make on the rig), ALC goes to "4 bars". After a couple of TX's in this configuration if I change the power back to 5 W, ALC stays at "4 bars" permanently. Any suggestions what might be causing it? Daniel PY2TDB.

Chirp issues? Old 817. Distant stories of bricks
9
I am using my 817 again. I've had it since a year or two after they came out. Gets used in spurts but I have never used programing software such as CHIRP. Main reason is that once upon a time I read that chirp(and others) had a habit of bricking certain Yaesu radios. Was this a thing? has it been addressed? I don't mind entering things from the keyboard but starting up in a new area with a dozen or so rptrs, new HF nets, M17 etc, it would be nice to do it by cptr. And, if not chirp are there any proven apps? Thanks for any thoughts Larry

Hair rising story
10
Today I was racing the bands so much during a POTA activation that I noticed I CQ'd two times 5 W in FT8 on 6 m using the wrong output (antenna was in the rear but the menu was selected FRONT). After I noticed, I corrected and the radio operated normally on both outputs (apparently). How much did I ruin the radio? Daniel.
