Just came over from the Yahoo group
Hi all. I just came over from Yahoo to join this group so I can still get all the info I need for my 817.
Question...Will this group cover the new FT-818 as well? I just bought one at the SEAPAC Convention in Seaside, Oregon this year (2019). I know they are practically the same, maybe a menu change or two, and the 818 has the TCXO. One other item, not sure if I can get help here but I'll mention it anyway. My 817 is having an audio problem. Anything I listen to, does not matter frequency or mode, the audio drops out at random and in glitches, popping in and out. If I turn the volume and squelch thru full range it will sometimes come back. Also, changing frequency tends to clear it as well. So, not sure if something is loose, wearing out, or a circuit is going bad somewhere in the audio chain. Anyone else have this problem? My 817 is a November 2006 ND model. Still works on all settings, just the audio is going bad. Thanks for being here! Walt Morey WA7SDY |
开云体育Hi Walt ? Welcome to the group. Yes, we cover the 818 as well, all models of this wonderful radio. ? Regards, Mark. ? 开云体育Hi You might want to try the low level reset to see if that helps.
The one where you don't loose everything, it's in the manual. On another note I have had good luck using Yaesu repair and are quite reasonable in price. Just a thought.

开云体育I agree with the reset.? But I wouldn’t stop at the low if it didn’t fix it.? I’d be willing to work my way up to the maximum reset.? After all, it sounds like a trip to the repair facility might be next, so go for it. ? Good luck! ? Mike – KD5KC -- El Paso -- Texas. ? The canyons are calling, colorful and deep.? The 818 is a waste of money.Besides the txco It has a slightly bigger battery capacity & 6 watts output instead of 5.Forget It. Walt,
This is typical of dirty contacts in the headphone jack.? Try inserting a headphone connector several times to help clean the contacts.? It may need a shot of electronic cleaner spray.? Using headphones for a few minutes will help you know that the problem is not with the receiver section.? If all is well on headphones it is likely the jack. Al |

Mine works great at 10 watts, with no heating IF the SWR is good.? On Wed, Dec 4, 2019 at 11:55 AM mdewynter via Groups.Io <mdewynter=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育Pretty much I agree. The 818 was a huge nothing-burger. The TCXO-9 isn’t necessary unless you’re using micro-wave transverters.? The 6-watt level is a 20% increase in battery drain for about a 1 dB increase in signal strength. And the loss of the 0.5-watt level was a really bad move for those or us who drive transverters. ? HOWEVER, for anyone who does not own an FT-817ND, the FT-818 is the only other option presently available. So while most of us consider it to be inferior to the original, it is still a pretty fair radio. ? I’m holding on to my two FT-817NDs, but I’m waiting patiently to see what that new ICOM looks like.? It just might to what the KX3 failed to do, kill the FT-817ND monopoly. ? Mike – KD5KC -- El Paso -- Texas. ? The canyons are calling, colorful and deep.? But I have promises to keep. Apart from the inexplicable woeful 70cms image rejection and power socket battery drain issues, I can't see why the FT818nd is inferior to the venerable 817 Mike? I totally agree about the 6 watts issue though, leaving the current consumption aside, it moves the radio out of its QRP status. I have a love hate relationship with mine. I love the little thing and wouldn't part with it, but my KX3 has the edge in many ways. Apples and oranges of course!

开云体育#1 -They should have left the power alone. ?5w is as good as 6w on the air, but 1w is not as good as 1/2watt when driving any transverter. ? #2 – I’ve heard a KX3 on 6m.? I have neve heard a KX3 on 2m or 70cm.? The 2.5w (measured) 2m board for the KX3 is a joke.? And not once have I ever heard a KX3 in any of the V/UHF contests. ? #3 – the KX3 is a very good radio.? But a 100% replacement to the FT-817 is it not.? And for portable operations in quiet locations the FT-817 is plenty good enough.? Earned stuff like this many times.? ? ? Just got a 3-ele Yagi for 6m that weighs under 3 pounds.? Can’t wait for the next VHF contest to try it out. ? ? Vy73 – Mike – KD5KC El Paso, Texas – DM61rt ? ? ? 开云体育This maybe one of the reasons for the 818.? The PA part for the 5

I have always been told QRP is anything under 10 watts.? Without really investigating, the newer MOSFETs have much lower on resistance and could just be able to deliver 6 watts without any change in design.? I gave my FT817 non ND to my son when I got the 818 for a retirement gift.? I loved the FT 817 so I love this radio.? I use it most of the time.? It is a great radio on PSK and it fits my QRP hobby just nicely.? There is a reason this radio is the most popular of all time regardless if you call it an 817 or 818.? Hey I am just getting to know it without a helper guide.? The only issue I have ever had with mine is it gets really hot in the sun because of the black case.

W4HGV, all rules have exceptions and there is at least one to the rule you state (which is a good one).? 开云体育Agreed.? Other than photo-ops, when I operate in the sunlight (and this is West Texas and Southern New Mexico) I sit with my back to the sun, and the radio hung around my neck, hanging down on my chest.? 开云体育Ahhhh – except that we don’t consider solar panels to be electronic, they are Electrical.? All 2+ kW at my house, and all 110 MW (not mW, MEGA-W) on my system at work. ? Please note, the efficiency of a solar panel is degraded with heat.? We’ll get 110 MW on a bright clear morning, but that falls off to 100 MW ± on a hot sunny afternoon.?
