Blown final club? I think I have a membership

Okay everyone, I think I may have joined the blown final club.

I was listening to the maritime mobile net on 14.300 and thought, what the hell? See if 2W might get the net control’s attention.

The 817 reported ‘highswr’ on the rear antenna port, so I went to the front and the highswr went away. However in both cases, the power meter only had on bar lite even though power for set for four bars.

Highswr into a dummy load on rear port.

That’s not right! So, even though the power jack is fubar, I can squirt in DC and at 13V input, I still get from 1 to 0 bars and the radio is only drawing 530ish mA.
That sure sounds like a pop PA board.

Makes no difference if I’m on HF or VHF, no bars or 1 flickers a bit. I can hear myself on another radio i.e. 146.52 rx and while tx on the 817.

This is an older 817, I don’t know the vintage, so this being the weekend, does any one know the approximate cost of a new PA board from Yaesu? Can you still get ‘em? Is the PA even bad?

Mike wb8vge

FYI…. I put my other 817 on line and the net control gave me a s9 report. I am in ohio, he was on the west coast. That Yaesu 817 is an amazing little rig!

Hi Mike, sorry to hear about the potential final loss but replacement boards are very inexpensive,(I bought 2 for $60+ total a year or so ago from yaesu USA. Regardless I would buy a couple of spares for your 817s. The boards fit all 817-817nd -818nd families. By 73 Rick VE1RNM

A few years ago, I acquired a used FT-817. I seem to recall that one screw was missing from the SO-239 connector. I suspect that some force had been applied to the connector and the soldered connection for the centre pin had broken off from the circuit board. I replaced the missing screw and re-soldering the center pin was an easy fix.

Rick,

Can you explain in detail how the get the new boards. Google does not reveal any lead to obtaining a new PA board.

I have an original FT817 and need a backup plan.

Hi Dean, an email or phone call to yaesu in Cerritos California and ask for the parts department. Then ask for the PA board for finals replacement in the FT 817, but you need to contact yaesu directly. With the ft818nd just being discontinued there should still be parts. Let us know how you make out. 72/73 Rick

Apparently the supply voltage is connected to the finals all the time. My understanding is that if you leave the internal battery in there, when it eventually runs down, the final goes into oscillation and destroys itself. If you haven’t lost your final yet, just keep doing what you’re doing - hi!

With that said, if you could round up a spare or two, it would not be a bad thing. When it happened to my brothers radio, he ordered two replacements. He still has the second spare sitting there.

Rick,

Thank you for the response and I will be on the phone Monday. I just pulled the old girl out of the case and pulled the battery pack out. Guess I have to do some testing and get her on the air for the NAQCC word challenge.

This rig and a QRP+ if you remember are the start to my CW experience. Don't know what I would do with out them. Just like the old pup listening to the cw music and tail tapping her on the floor.

BTW, how do you determine the FT-817 serial number?

Hi Dean,

?

The serial number should be on a label on the bottom of the radio, between the battery door and the rear heatsink. It will be in the format ?of a digit and then a letter and then 6 digits. The first digit indicated the last digit of the year of manufacture, the letter indicated the month of manufacture with C being January, the next two digits are the batch number and the last 4 digits are the actual number in the batch of that particular radio so, for instance, if your radio has a serial number of 2G051234 it would mean that it was build in 2002, in May, was batch number 05 and its individual serial in the batch was 1234.

?

That is how the serial numbers on all later Yaesu radios work. Not sure whether they used the same system on earlier radios in 60’s, 70’ etc.

This happened to mine. It also took out the two relays that select the front and rear antenna jacks. I ordered a FINAL UNIT in 2021 and installed it. They didn't have the relays and had to wait 8 months for them. I wanted to order a spare FINAL UNIT, last month and Yaesu USA has NONE. They did not seem interested in getting any more in stock.

This rig and a QRP+ if you remember are the start to my CW experience. Don't know what I would do with out them. Just like the old pup listening to the cw music and tail tapping her on the floor.

?

BTW, how do you determine the FT-817 serial number?

Hi Dean, an email or phone call to yaesu in Cerritos California and ask for the parts department. Then ask for the PA board for finals replacement in the FT 817, but you need to contact yaesu directly. With the ft818nd just being discontinued there should still be parts. Let us know how you make out. 72/73 Rick

Rick,

Can you explain in detail how the get the new boards. Google does not reveal any lead to obtaining a new PA board.

?

I have an original FT817 and need a backup plan.

Hi yes I have done it,
It will be a big help to use a hot plate, I used at the time a swan multi cooker and removed the slow cook pot,
So I could put the final unit on to the hot metal pan,
I also have a metcal soldering iron,
Give it a go,
Good luck

The critical step ?is the Kaplan tape . Quickchip might make ?removing the heat sink a bit easier.

The guy on YouTube really knows how to solder SMT! ?Note that only he needed a heat gun and pair of tweezers. No fancy equipment needed.

All,

So, I called Yaesu parts and ordered 3 PA boards. $26.00 each.

Problem is that they don't have any in stock. She took my order and credit card info. I received a email confirmation. They will ship when the backfill order is received.

Dean

"Average Ham" likely doesn't own a soldering iron.
