All,

So, I called Yaesu parts and ordered 3 PA boards. $26.00 each.

Problem is that they don't have any in stock. She took my order and credit card info. I received a email confirmation. They will ship when the backfill order is received.

I am on my 3rd PA board for my FT817non-ND I bought around 2004.? Both replacements I got from Yaesu, cost about $60 for the PA board assembled and ready to install.? Last one was probably 5 years ago so need to check with Yaesu.

Comes with install instructions, takes a little soldering.? Also look on the FT817 site for installing for one needs to reverse the input and output RF connections.

On first blush, that appears to be an excessively high mortality rate. Any thoughts on "the why" of it all?

Hi Jeff.? I am very curious.? Have you done the reverse phase mod there in the final RF stage?? Had you checked and set the bias carefully?? I have been out of this loop for years, but I had one of the first run when finals were blowing and a few of us saw some design problems with the phase or the input to the final board.? I did all of that and have not had a failure (I am not claiming that my mod fixed any problem, but curious about others who DID do the mod and whether the finals released the blue smoke).?

My 817 still happy, only a few other repairs needed in the many years I've used her.? She is not used a whole lot these days, but I imagine I'll want to stock replacement PA transistors myself.?

Did Yaesu ever release a service bulletin on this?? I know that the 817ND made some changes, just not sure what those were.

Dean,

Recent information leads me to believe that may not be true. It's only an initial report, but it seems FT-817 (non-ND) may no longer be supported, and Yaesu appears to be no longer interested in stocking/selling replacement finals boards for at least the early non-ND models.

I suppose I could be corrected, but I thought that after the ND, the older boards were not used at all, and the newer boards were drop replacements for the old boards in the 817.? The 808 and 817 have very few significant differences.?

I believe you are correct.

It makes sense that Yaesu is dropping support for the FT-817 (non-ND) due to age (meaning if one is sent in for repair, it will be returned unrepaired).

BUT, the question is, are these two board numbers from FT-817 or FT-818?

Final Unit and is number FR006000. Which mounts on top of the PA board, FR005190

It would also make sense to drop support for FT-817 specific parts, and I suspect those numbers are FT-817 specific, they are probably planning on stocking the FT-818 specific parts.

Interesting to see how this classic radio is being treated in its twilight years...

The FT-817 was released 23 years ago, the FT-817ND was released 20 years ago. The FT-818 was released about 6 years ago - I don't think Yaesu can drop support for the FT-818 yet...

Ken,

Where did you get those part numbers. This is off my invoice sheet today:

3.00 0.00 3.00 EA B CB1333004 EA 26.17 78.51 1.0 FT-817 FINAL UNIT

CB1333004 is the board with two mosfets.

I will return a call to Yaesu tomorrow to clarify the part numbers.

Keep me posted and I have never seen a parts manual for the FT-817.

?

You have to remember that there are over a quarter of a million of the units out there so there are bound to be some failures.

Remember, also, that the early units with the bipolar transistors were more prone to taking off under low battery conditions and blowing up the finals due to there being no load on them

Good morning to the Group,

Dean, the part number CB1333004 is correct, I purchased my spare finials from yaesu USA with Beatriz Velarde as my contact in August of 2019 and she confirmed that this final works with all models of the 817 including the original and of course the 818nd that had been released the year before replacing the 817nd after a 14 year run on that model. When I bought my 818nd in January 2023, it came with a 3 year warranty, so they have to keep spare parts available at least until 2026. Vy 73

Some third parties still sell the boards... at their prince, which isn't as cheap as they used to be. Also if you're sure that it's just a transistors fault the same mitsubishi that came with my 817ND can be bought relatively cheap from major retailers. IIRC it was 7 euros each about a year ago. Original 817 uses an older model, and a different board which I don't know how easy to find it is.

time on it. I saw some recently say they ordered the boards, and some
say they are unavailable. What is the real story? Is there an
alternative that tossing the 817 in electronics recycling?

Hi Jeff,

You have to remember that there are over a quarter of a million of the
units out there so there are bound to be some failures.

Remember, also, that the early units with the bipolar
transistors were more prone to taking
off under low battery conditions and blowing up the finals due
to there being no load on
them

On first blush, that appears to be an excessively high mortality
rate. Any thoughts on "the
why" of it all?
