Collins Mechanical Filter
Can any of you give me a suggestion on what might be going on with one of my FT-818nd radio. I have two 818nd Radios but only one has a Collins Mechanical 500Hz CW Filter. I wanted to add one to the

Re: Operating CW without Microphone- how to add FST button?
Even easier! I keep a few of these RJ45 breakout boards around - https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Connector-Breakout-Board-terminals/dp/B01N7R2M71 -- Jeff, KN8A

The other trick is to program memories with some spaced frequencies in order for the bands you operate. 72 de Bryan, k0emt

Re: Operating CW without Microphone- how to add FST button?
Hi, I'd cut a few inches off an ethernet cable, solder a small push button switch onto the wires then add some heat shrink tubing to hold it together. Much better than drilling a hole in the radio

Mike AD9CA: Good point about the up/down buttons versatility.? But I can get by without up/down buttons, and I usually use? a straight key. Thanks for your response! Mike N4MWP

Re: Antenna port
Yes can use either front BNC or rear SO239 connectors for any band.? Only issue I understand is there is internal relay that is set for the connector selected meaning the relay is drawing power when

Re: Antenna port
I changed the SO239 on my original FT-817 for an N socket. The 2-hole mounting Ns are a bit rare but available on Ebay in the UK. I haven't noticed any difference but I feel good about it. 73, John

Thanks to all. ?Much appreciated. You guys are really good! I thought I would offer up a little background as to why I asked the question in the first place. I have a few FT-818nd radios. It remains

Re: Operating CW without Microphone- how to add FST button?
Hi Mike: I cannot answer your question regarding the fst button; but, I too use my 817 mostly in cw mode; and, I often use the up and down buttons on the mic to run cw. I do this because I do not want

Operating CW without Microphone- how to add FST button?
I use my FT-817 almost exclusively in CW mode, but I get irritated at having to have the microphone available in in order to change the "FST" status (10 hz vs 100 hz tuning resolution). So I want to

Re: Antenna port
The relay draws 30 mA/hr and on full "QRO Operation" at 5 watts output the radio draws 2 A/hr when TX, markedly less on RX (250-450 mA/hr) per published Mfg specs. See:

Re: Antenna port
Hi Paul, Yes, the relay is activated for the rear (SO239) socket and deactivated for the front (BNC) socket. From memory the current drain of the relay is in the region of 30 mA so this can affect the

Re: Antenna port
You're right - from the factory the radio is delivered with an antenna "kit" to operate on 6 meters, 2 meters, and 70 cm bands that attach to the BNC connector on the front panel. You can insert a

Re: Antenna port
I was under the impression that the reason for the BNC front antenna port is because the radio was intended and designed for portable, over the shoulder, strap/case carrying. Thus the antenna,

Re: Antenna port
Generally speaking, the BNC connectors are better impedance matched than the M-type (SO-239) connectors. And this may affect more on V/UHF frequencies. So the rear M-type connector is for the HF and
