Re: Chirp issues? Old 817. Distant stories of bricks
I wont even try to say a word about CHIRP bricking or not radios as I used to be one of the developper and specifically the original author of 8X7 modules
BUT
I can't repeat enought times that CHIRP

Re: Chirp issues? Old 817. Distant stories of bricks
Hello,
Due to first hand experience, I will never use CHIRP again to program any radio!
I bricked my 817ND with it. I had to pay for the recovery procedure at Yeasu,? due to using CHIRP. Yeasu stated

Re: Chirp issues? Old 817. Distant stories of bricks
Hi Larry. I have an 817ND and using a generic cable off of Amazon I had no trouble at all with programming it with chirp. I followed the instruction in the software to the letter and found programming

Re: Chirp issues? Old 817. Distant stories of bricks
Some lines taken from other posts here and there,
Yaesu advised against using Chirp software.
CHIRP is not specifically designed to work with Yaesu's somewhat unusual software. It can be massaged to

Re: Chirp issues? Old 817. Distant stories of bricks
Hi Larry,
I haven’t heard of problems using Chirp with the FT8x7 group of radios although I have previously used FTBasicMMO for programming mine (817, 857 & 897) and always had good results with

Chirp issues? Old 817. Distant stories of bricks
I am using my 817 again. I've had it since a year or two after they came out. Gets used in spurts but I have never used programing software such as CHIRP.? Main reason is that once upon a time I read

Re: Hair rising story
I have managed to work stations in 6 m FT8 (FRONT), 2 m and 70 cm FM
(FRONT) and 10 m FT8 (REAR) after.
As you've said: probably nothing damaged. Phew!

Re: Hair rising story
I like the way you think, Barry!
Though real estate within the FT-817 case is at a premium, including an automatically switched load for the unused antenna port would have been a superb design

Re: Hair rising story
I allways put a 50ohm dummy load on the antenna output that is not in use.
Having to replace the output pa transistors in not fun and expensive.
I hope this solves some of your concern for the pa on

Re: Hair rising story
I think the FT817 screen will show a high SWR warning and foldback the power output, I’ve been in the same boat before and no harm done.

Re: Hair rising story
I had a poorly tuned 2 meter dipole, purchased online, antenna that made my FT817ND display flash a warning message of high SWR(???) during RTTY transmissions, and the finals never failed.? (maybe

Re: Hair rising story
The 817nd is pretty robust,? I've had a 70cms 5w usb qso over 10 miles without a connected antenna. Other than a weaker than normal signal no damage done. You should be fine.

If it is still putting out the expected power, it's OK.

Re: Hair rising story
That’s hard to tell. Probably nothing damaged if you are still able to
transmit on all bands as expected. I know the concern. But if it’s working
normally, it’s not like you’ve partially hurt

Hair rising story
Today I was racing the bands so much during a POTA activation that I
noticed I CQ'd two times 5 W in FT8 on 6 m using the wrong output (antenna
was in the rear but the menu was selected FRONT). After

You are right. I was mistaken. I thought blinking only works with a built-in battery only. I just checked out, the indicator switches from none to blinking, with external power with a voltage less

Re: PWR level
Not really. Blinking indicator means the radio produces 5W, but voltage is less than ~11V. This works with a built-in battery only. With the external battery there is no blinking indicator at all, the

Re: PWR level
Following Blasco's advice, today I used a Powerwerx meter:
With Bioenno (LIII not blinking but with all 9 bars from PO indicator lit):
RX: 0.35 A, 13.06 V, 4.7 W
TX: 2.3 A, 12.90 V, 29.6

Re: Bluetooth CAT device
Michael,
The damage that can be done to the FT-8xx series of radios is why Yaesu
recommended to the HAM RADIO DELUXE folks to remove the capability to
read/write to that same area.
The later versions
