You may consider a Bluetooth dongle for the 818. This will let you pair a pi with Bluetooth (I use a pi zero w) to the dongle in the 818. I then use Flrig to read the CAT data and control

I believe the FT-817/818 CAT interface is inverted, but I think it uses 5V
logic levels and the inputs on the Pi are not 5V tolerant if memory
serves, so you'll at least need to limit the high logic
