So is shuld be possible to desolder the original ssb filter and make
connections to the optional ssb filter, and use the socket for
the cw filter.
I am still waiting for my cw filter to arrive. so i dont know if
there is physical space for both filters.
If i find space inside the 817 i will install both filters.

Hi Hans,

Not in your wildest dreams is there space. The ceramic filter is
small and tightly pack into the PCB, and the SSB filter is LARGE.
Now if you are willing to remove the speaker then you will have
space. BTW, I do like the performance improvement both filters give
the FT-817.

WG: MP-1 Antennas arrived in DL-Land

I didnt believe, that it will happen because I never got response from super
antennas BUT
this morning I got a phone call from German Custom: a big package of MP-1
antennas arrived at Frankfurt airport! The will be shipped to Berlin
tomorrow. So, starting monday I will be able to deliber MP-1

I added all details to my homepage

Europeans interested in ZM-2 Antenna Tuner also now can order them in
DL-Land. ZM-2 can be shipped from Berlin Stock since yesterday. (I have lots
of them :-)

You're right on the money with the battery life, and thanks for the
tip on how far down to go on the voltage. This is what I was trying
to ask:

A) Will connecting the battery and the radio in parallel with my car
battery by way of the cigarette lighter plug on my dash, cause the
gel cel any problems?

B) If question a above is negative, will this in fact provide a slow
charge to the Gel Cel also?

Yes, it will do fine. Just watch the drain, try not to run the cell
below 11.5v to limit a short battery life... You'll prob get abt 4-
6hrs
of normal use out of it ( give or take )

After going through far too many AA Duracells, I have broken down and
First, get rid of those duracells, anything less than a high rated NiMH
cells/pack is a waste of time ( unless you just want to listen!)
Alkaline AAs don't seem to hold up unless you are using one of the
lowest power settings on the FT-817, but lithium AAs do better at
the higher power settings. Sure, they are not rechargeable, but I
keep a set of 8 lithium AAs and the 817's AA tray as my power
source of last resort (after exhausting my Maha NiMH pack, a couple
of 7Ah gel-cells, and if I can't connect to any other external
power source). I do the same thing for my HT (IC-T81A), for the
same reason.

For day-in, day-out use, some sort of rechargeable pack is preferred.
A rechargeable pack (Yaesu's, Maha's or that other one shown at
Dayton - forget the name) would be better in the long run. You could
put rechargeable AAs in the tray and leave that in the radio, but if
you are using higher-capacity AAs it will take a long time to
recharge in the radio - or you will be taking them out of the radio
to get them charged quickly, then putting them back, and putting
extra wear on those flimsy springs on the AA tray.

Just my $0.02....

Hello 817 ops,

I experience quite a bit of noise when operating in
the cw mode, especially when i install a good antenna.
Yaesu optional CW filter installed and seems to work,
Narrow button on, I have only found that limiting the
RF gain, and turning up the volume helps. Any one
else seem to have extra than normal noise. Other rigs
i use for comparison are probably in a higher price
range, FT-100, MP, but others are not: the sierra,
SST, DSW. Does the inrad cw filter offer any great
advantages?

I bet by now, a lot of you are NOT using the AA
Battery compartment. what a great place to install a
DSP unit( amongst other things). any one done that or
working on one?

Anybody having trouble with getting these animals
to resonate after adding a counterpoise might try
adding a capacity hat over the coilmade with a couple
of stiff wires and aligator clips - I've found this
to be effective on several homemade whips I've fiddled
with over the last month - it's particularly easy to
work out if you're using an antenna analyzer, although a
2.5 meg shift to 20 meters might be a bit of stretch.....
I just tried that. Clipping a piece of stiff wire to the tip of the whip. I
did get it to resonate but it took 46 inches of wire and was mechanically
pretty flimsy - don't breathe hard it will fall over. I think the "Miracle
Whip" is looking better and better. The article in the July QST is quite
good.

The CS
unit will (obviously) only help on rx, while the filter may help

Hi.
The current drain for any filter shuld be about the same,
as they are all selected by the same type of circuit (diode matrix).

The values for the resistors/capasitors around the filters are the
same.
So is shuld be possible to desolder the original ssb filter and make
connections to the optional ssb filter, and use the socket for
the cw filter.

Gel Cel battery / Auto Cig Plug?

After going through far too many AA Duracells, I have broken down and
purchased what was called a Power Kit from www.PowerPortStore.com
(those folks who make the WorldPouch etc.) which is a 12 volt 2.3 amp
gel cel battery. As quickly as the Duracells were draining I found it
useful to attach a Cigarette lighter plug to the power cable that
came with my 817 so that I could use it in my vehicle as well as
utilize an AC power supply I have at home.

Anyway, I would like to attach that Cig Plug to the leads that come
off of the gel cel. that would enable me to use auto/ac-converted
power when available (perhaps even slow charge) and leave me
connected and using battery when it's not available (just need to
roll up and stash the cord...)

Will this damage the battery?

I've posed this question to the manufacturer and there has been no
response to date....

The curious thing about that is you would think that they would design them
to be a little low in frequency so that all you would have to do is push the
whip in a little to get it where you want it. But they make it high where
you can't do a darned thing about it other than add an external loading
device, or kludge up some kind of whip extension.

Kinda is not even close.

I tested some Maldol whips with an MFJ259B. At that time the 40, 20
and 10 meter versions were available from my local radio dealer.

The 10m is fine, and resonates at a little less than 29meg.

The 20m will not go under 16.5 mhz even with a counterpoise.

The 40m is similarly high.

The resonant points had reasonable SWRs, just too high in frequency in
the 40 and 20 cases.

I don't know how any of the other available bands work other than the
3 I tested.

If someone could find a way to extend the whip a couple feet in a way
that would be strong and light, they might work OK.

Found the same box in "Gander Mountain" (hunting, fishing, camping
stores in Midwest)last night. They had two sizes. $10 and $12. I
picked one up. I'll let you know how it works out with my FT-817.

Hello Rene,

I don't think you should be worried at all.

One bar on the SWR meter is most likely insignificant. My 817 sits
here on my desk, connected to a portable tuner with a built in SWR
meter. I'm using a 20m dipole. When the SWR measures decently low
(1.5 to 1 or less) the bars on the rig will fluctuate between 1 and 3
bars.

Sometimes when my external meter shows flat SWR, the bars on the rig
will read 2 or 3 bars, and when I adjust the tuning to get the bars
on the rig to disappear I find that the SWR on the external meter
increases. It's one of those balance acts between what the rig says,
what the external meter measures as SWR and what the external meter
measures as amount of power out.

I would say 1 or 2 bars on your rig is just fine. Even the supplied
whip for 144/440/50 gives you a few bars depending on frequency and
such. But, if you can get your hands on an external SWR meter that
will activate with just a couple of watts, it would be worth it just
for your peace of mind to check your antenna.

MOD problem: attenuated RX

 

After an afternoon of FB operation on 6 m with the FT-817 I decide to
install the SSB filter. Since I was half way I decide to make the
extended TX mod.

I was using a "regular" soldering iron. After two attempts, the
first one did not work maybe because my poor soldering, I was able to
make the modification but whet I connect the antennas I notice I have
a very attenuated reception on all bands. I guess I put to much heat
on the jumpers.

This attenuation is when using USB, LSB, CW, AM. But not when using
FM, WFM or Packet in which the radio is receiving as usual.

One very strange thing is that if I am on 1.799 the reception in any
mode is fine but as soon as I go to 1.800 (160 meters)the RX is
immediately attenuated.

I have try the jumpers as several MODs mentioned, as well as infinite
number of resets but the reception is still attenuated.

Right now I have the original jumper setting.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Plans for Field Day?

How many you guys (and gals) taking your 817 out somewhere interesting for Field Day here in the U.S.?

I'm biking out to a state park in California's hot country with a solar panel, a 5-ah battery, two different types of wire antennas, and if they tell me there isn't much in the way of trees, a 20' pole.

Should arrive around noon, set up a tent, stay overnight, etc. I'm tempted to take along an extra 7-ah battery, but that's a lot of extra weight to carry for many miles on a bike. Will operate SSB as much as possible.

My hope is that a club isn't setting up in the park (also) with high-power rigs.

Like to hear back from those of you who go. Scores, etc. Good luck!

Hi Julio,

6 meters is a great band, it has been my most favorite band for the last
21 years. My first rig was a Kachina 1 followed by a more modern Yaesu
FT-608R through the lastest in the FT-847 mobile and FT-817 backpack.

With a good E opening you can work almost anywhere with milliwatts.

However, I have still to work all 50 states, missing 6m and I am only
half way to DXCC on 6.
