Hi Doug, I purchased a CT-26 (modular to 8 pin), computer headset and
located the pins for Mic/Ground/PTT. Wired up a cable to the CT-26
along with plugs for the headset and a PTT switch. Works fine and
told cost after getting new plugs from RS was less then $40.00. The
CT-26 is sold at AES under FT-100 Accessories but does work with the
FT-817 according to Yaesu, because I asked them before I tried it.
You can always get a cable with RJ45 connectors on each end and cut
one off and then located the wires and hookup your headset that way
also.

a Pocket PC at the moment... Although I've been thinking of a good
excuse to get one; so maybe I will.

Yes, this would be an appropriate topic for a poll. Go ahead an
create one using the Polls feature of this site please. I suggest
that you make a post about 3 times over a week letting readers know
that the poll is there to take should they desire.

tools in developing on the traditional Windows platform. I can't

Let me start...

I vote for a Palm interface rather then CE. If you have not already looked
at Code Warrior you may want too as it has a common interface for most all
of their tools.

Believe it or not, I have just ordered the Windows CE 3.0 development
pack from Microsoft. As your mail came in I was on the web looking at
Developing Applications for the Pocket PC with Microsoft? eMbedded
Visual Basic? 3.0!!

As they say - watch this space...

Hi Bob,
I've been using a Windows CE device running a DOS emulator as a
portable controller for some time now and it works well. A dedicated CE
program would be great but I think it should be at least Ver. 2.01 compatible
as well as Pocket PC (ver 3.0) as the slightly older devices are quite cheap
on the second hand market.

The MFJ equalized mic (MFJ 299) works very well with the FT-817 and produces great audio reports. For those times when I use the little rig as a base station, a large external speaker and a good base mic make the ft-817 seem very grown-up.

If you plan on getting an MFJ 299, you'll have to either make your own cable or re-wire the enclosed MFJ cable provided for Yaesu radios. Still, it's a great mic!

I just bought the MFJ mast which is 30 feet I think. It works great.
I can put 5/8 wave vert on 10-15 meters and 1/4 on 40. I am working
on a G5RV. I have not seen the DK mast. It might be a bit stronger
and heavy.

Hi Guys (& Gals!):

I've been a member of this list almost from the start, and have been
reading the comments about the Outbacker & Outreach. I have had this
combination as my "portable - take anywhere" system since they first
came out. I have used it at our Radio Club's Field Day site for
several years first for the 6-Meter VHF station and then for the HF
Digital station. I even operated a 1B station one year with it. I
am not an '817 owner YET(Think I'll wait for the -D model!), but have
operated some QRP on it. I LOVE THIS ANTENNA!! Although you
probably wouldn't want to go take it hiking, it would work great for
a weekend trip to the beach, or to the park, etc. I put Hustler
Quick-Disconnects on mine, so I can also use my Perth-Plus for 6/2
meters. Yes, it is a little on the expensive side, but a well-made
quality product that will perform and will last. 'Nuff said...

The AP-10A coil and its hardware would be useful piece parts that
could be mixed and matched with other antenna parts, after a little
machine work making some adapters.

Looks like the AP-10A makes an efficient fixed portable antenna, as

it was intended. I guess for those of us who want a single travel
antenna which can fullfull both mobile and portable requirements, the
stock AP-10A might not be quite as well suited.

*** Seems to work well for me. Doesn't seem to be very fussy in
tuning as long as I have my 259B along. I guess you could adapt the
AP-10A for mobile use, but I would rather use something else.

For the versatility that the MP-1 and its FT-817 bracket provides

with fixed portable, mobile, and pedestrian mobile use... I have a
hunch the MP-1 would still be my choice when packing light for a
trip... especially for rental cars and pedestrian.

*** Under those conditions, I would agree.

Speaking of "packing light"... I've recently been using the new ATX
with the 3/8-24 threads for those times when I travel with an

absolute minimum size package. Although the efficiency of the ATX is
not as good as either the MP-1 or the AP10A, I've managed to make
some Pedestrian Mobile SSB QSOs on 18MHz~21MHz with the ATX and the
FT-817. On 7, 10, 14MHz, I have only made CW contacts... SSB 5W just
doesn't cut it there with this combo. The ATX (3/8-24) using the MP-
1 mount on the FT-817 is a much more durable combination for
pedestian use than my "old" ATX BNC.

YES! It's not as small as a laptop supply ( it is very compact ) but it
works well, 2A and excellent regulation.

Recent flyer from RadioShack has the 9.6v NIMH battery on sale for $20.,this
is in the St,Louis area,bought one and put the fuse and proper plug in I
received for the gentleman that makes them here in the group,now the faulty
springs in battery holder wont give any problems.
