to have gone about it would have been to wait until a day or two had gone by and then gently reminded the forum as a whole or the offending individual specifically by back channel that it was an Yayhoo FT817 Forum. NOBODY likes a List Nazi, particularly a self-appointed one. We drove one off QRP-L not all that long ago, and he was the the official List Manager. I should not have to remind you that you have no more rights here than the author of the comments about the Kenwood radio. I also should not need to point out that some discussion of a similar radio (small, compact, capable of wide range of receive) can help understand the FT817 even better. So ... chill ... adjust your prozac and enjoy your 817! cheers ... bbr -----Original Message----- |
Re: FTBasic/817/Kenwood users
John,
The idea of an additional 'description' field of say 25 characters has already been suggested by David Henn. I am pondering on the best way to implement this, and the current thoughts are to have a .CSV file automatically created with each .817 file, and some- how keep the two in step - that's the bit I haven't yet decided upon, but will get there in the end. Making my own Heil adapter
I picked up a Heil BM-10 for hands-free operation but decided to make
my own mic adapter rather than pay extra bucks for Heil's version. I'm not sure which pins to connect and would like some clarification. Does the Heil plug tip go to +5 and the ring go to ground? Also, for PTT I'm assuming I would place a switch between that line and ground? I've check the message archives and files area but couldn't find any good confirmation on my assumptions. Thanks and 73. KB0LUR, Paul |

I have posted V1.4.601 of FTBasic atBob, this is great! I spent some time this weekend fiddling with this (one of the harmonics and I use KW HTs) and this works so quickly and easily that it's almost a miracle! <g> The files go into and out of the two formats like a breeze. The only thing that strikes me (it is a "fault" of the KW HT) is that the KW's 6-character alpha-numeric tags are kinda cryptic, even to the person who set them up. Obviously, to go back and forth into/out of the 817, they need to stay as 6 (not that 8 characters is exactly a new horizon in identification, either!). This may be a practical limitation on the ability to use files uploaded by another operator. A solution would be to add another (11th?) column for a longer descriptive tag...since neither the KW nor the Yaesu could read this data, it would have to be stripped off going into the (either) radio's "native" format...and, I guess, be reattached by the FTBasic software. Ummm, sounds like more bother than it's worth, probably... <?> Many tnx for your continuing product improvements. FTBasic is probably the best $15 I ever spent! FTBasic/817/Kenwood users
I have posted V1.4.601 of FTBasic at
which includes a Convert facility for those of you with Kenwood rigs TH-G71A, TH-D7A(G) and TM-D700A. The Kenwood memories files look very similar, and other VHF/UHF rigs's files may work as well. What the new mod does is to convert the memory parts of the Kenwood file into a CSV file that includes the FTBasic header record, decimal points in the right places for frequencies/ offsets, decodes CTCSS and DCS indicators etc. All you have to do is to check that your frequencies are valid for the 817, and if not then edit them in a spreadsheet or text editor. If anyone has problems then mail me direct for fastest resolution. Bob G4HFQ P.S. yesterday evening (evening in the UK) I had a dud copy of this release up on the web for about 3 hours until I noticed the glitch. If anyone downloaded a dud then another go will probably get you going - you only need the ftb14601ex.exe file. Sorry for that. |

I got mine from the 'actual' MFJ booth. They had a box full of 'em.

Hummm?Wow ! You got a great deal. I was standing at the HRO booth at 9:20 AM on Friday and bought a MaHa battery pack and LDG tuner...The $669 Price was on the stack of FT817's. They did proceed to rip down all their price placards while we were in the throng...Mark at HRO told us that too many other dealers were shopping around for prices....They then started a policy to meet or beat any price at Dayton on anything in stock...I guess that is where they decided to drop the price furthur. We defeated their systems (AES did the same thing) by using radios and spreading out. We also found several dealers with high prices...such as Hamstation and Michigan Radio. |

When I checked on Friday AM HRO was selling them for $639 UDS each!? So I got one, paid cash, and my printed sales slip shows the price I was quoted above. Maybe they were selling so fast they jacked the price up to match the vendor in the next booth, which was quoting a price of $669 USD each, later on. Hummm? I bought one, by credit card, from HRO at Dayton on Sunday, sligtly before noon, for $639.95 plus $41.60 local sales tax. I thought that was a pretty good price, and HRO is my local dealer, also. So, now I have one. BTW, I think the Kenwood HT is likely to be of interest to some people in this group, partially because it includes wide-band ALL-MODE reception. Who knows how good it'll be on 20M SSB, but the capability is there. An FT-817 and the Kenwood might be useable for full-duplex satellite ops, in a very small package. 73, doug still at Dayton, but going home today. |

The highest price I was quoted was $760 USD from Michigan Radio. When I said I could get one from HRO much cheaper I was told, by a sales agent at the vendor's booth, that they were "selling old stock, and not the model with the current factory changes". I checked at the Yaesu booth and was told that was completely untrue. Looks like Dayton's Hamvention is not the place for the careless shopper if they want to save money. 8->> Leland C. Re: Which Performs Better: ATX or MP-1?
For "Motel Mobile" operations I try to get as close to the window as
possible. The antenna normally sitting on its tripod. Some hotels have been impossible with the noise level inherent in the building. I try to request as high a room as possible with an opening window or for true bliss a balcony. I have "heard" that at even QRP levels the FT817 is capable of clearing out a Marriott using the fire alarm system on 12M. Paul |
