Re: Ant. Tuners for backpack?
Yes, to a certain extent. The 10 mA drain is when the tuner is left
on after it has found a match and just waits for the swr to rise
above 3.
The nifty thing about the Z-11 is that you can turn it

Re: Ant. Tuner for backpack
John,
have a look to Emtech's ZM-2 a Z-match compact and ligh unit, with
visual tuning aid. And it's 50 bucks or so.

You will have to build it yourself, but

Re: Ant. Tuners for backpack?
Well, in anticipation of the FT-817 i went and bought the Z-11 from
LDG. It is a automatic tuner, coax only, with lo-z and hi-z L-
network. It runs on 9 - 16 V and has a low amp requirement.

Check out the Kanga Kits Super T antenna tuner for $20. Using switches, you
select only the combination of impedences you want with very little loss. I
modified it with a somewhat better design. I'm

Re: Ant. Tuners for backpack?
I use (with my ft-817) MFJ's tiniest model , don't have it handy or I
would give you the model number however it measures roughly 2 inches
square and matches every long wire I have

Take a look at the MFJ catalog; they have several good, compact tuners.

About low power / small tuners:
Most of you probably already know about this little unit, but just in case......
For a low power tuner, check out the Z-11 from LDG Electronics. It requires 0.1

Yeah MFJ makes one, I have one of them. I can't remember the number off hand but they call it a random wire tuner. It is essentially an L-network and depending on whether you are feeding a high or

Re: SG2020 comparison
I too had an SG2020. After the initial euphoria died, I started to
realize that it really wasn't as good as I thought it was. The SG2020
started to go deaf on 15M and above. On 10M it was near deaf

817 vs 2020 vs ...?
While we wait for the first deliveries, I'm wondering whether there are any SGC 2020
users on this list, and what they find more (or less) attractive about the FT-817
compared to the 2020?

Re: Amplify output with 817

Couldn't help but jump into this. I've had amps that use a 4CX250 and they
would be perfect candidates to run high power. The tube will cover HF/VHF/UHF

Re: Amplify output with 817
Actually, 100 watts is only slightly over 2 S-units stronger than 5 watts.
Paul, 5 watts should be fine unless you wish to talk to the lids on 75M, who won't pay any attention to you if you're not 40
